How to Convert a Box Truck to a Tiny House

Tiny House DIY

4 жыл бұрын

In this video, I describe how I converted a box truck into a tiny house camper.
In 2019, we built what would become one of the most viewed box truck conversions on KZfaq. After watching the time lapse of our build, many people had questions about how we did it and what materials we used.
This video is an attempt to explain some of that process.
See the original time lapse of our build here:
kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdWYl66m2Meaqps.html
You can also watch a tour of the tiny house box truck here:
kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMyqirp43Jy1iKc.html
Check out my channel to see our travels in this box truck conversion, as well as videos on other projects (like our Astro Van conversion).
Thank you watching!

Pulling that original door off was genius. Many of y'all don't know this but there's no emergency latch to let someone free so I really can't blame him for cutting that out

Also roll doors are prone to drag outside filth inside the truck and closing the roll part off is a mf sometimes. Not to mention the extra weight it adds; I’d rather have a shower or something more useful that’s not gonna rattle and squeak all drive.

So smart to use the original wall holes to mount everything. It doesn't seem like most people do this yet it offers so many advantages. You're an excellent thinker and planner. This was so well done, especially mentioning the previous shortcomings and what you've learned so far. A lot of people wouldn't have the courage to do that. Very commendable.

For not having carpentry experience you did an amazing job. As for painting the frame work it actually is a benefit in case you get in moisture or sweating inside. I've been in the paint and construction business over 38 years. It will help prevent mildew issues if that does happen. I'd do the same thing. The Tyvek wrap can go right side up, or upside down. It don't make any difference at all. People just like to be critics. You did well.

I didn't see any mistakes:) I never heard about the T11 moisture/sealing issue. What I would say is get a quality exterior paint and fully seal it so no moisture gets in. You can even get the color matched to keep the log cabin look. No moisture in.. none needs to get out. Like others have said I think its a great job, looks good and it works. Nothing will ever be perfect so enjoy it and fix anything that requires it when it comes up. I thought the way you reused the original holes was brilliant. Enjoy your rig and thanks for sharing your build.

Beautiful, Cole. If anything, you probably overbuilt in a few ways. I built a "box" camper on the back of a '63 Chevy pick-up back in 1972 that my then wife and I took from WI to LA, up the coast into Canada, back down through WI and on to AR. We actually lived in it for several weeks at a time and were quite comfortable. I used 2X2 red oak as studs in the sidewalls and ran the T-111 horizontal, as you did and insulated it with a cardboard like material that had foam where the corrugation would normally be. Two storm windows with the glass replaced by plexiglass gave us light and ventilation (one on each side). The whole thing could be dismantled in minutes and easily reassembled. Never wrote down any design, just flew by the seat of my pants. The final addition was a storage box over the pick-up cab. The wind resistance against the front wall was really noticeable until I fashioned a storage box with an angled lid. Never had a leak anywhere. I've often thought about converting a box truck like you used, I'm pleased to see how well you made it work. I wish I would have taken more pictures, and maybe done a video, but the technology for doing that just wasn't available. Beyond that camper, though, you're building something much longer lasting and more important. Memories. Beautiful memories. Congratulations.

I'm so glad you made this. That time lapse video is what inspired me to build something like this! I've showed this to some family and friends, and I'm so excited about it. Right now, I'm trying to build up enough savings to buy a retired U-Hual (or something similar, maybe a step van), and buy some tools. It'll be just me & my two cats. And, the first trip I wanna go on is to Mexia, Texas--where some of my family moved, after the #campfire2018. Hopefully within the next year-or-two, I'll be posting my own content for everyone to see & share. 🙂

Just did a test camping run for a month with my 2012 Ford Transit box van :) It has now only a bed in the back and it will be a lot of money and work before it is finished. A box car is much more easy to work with as it is totally box shaped, a normal van is much more work as nothing is box shaped on the inside (sloping walls, and curved ceiling) and everything must be custom built as other vice it will not fit. My van I can put in anything you can in a normal house as long as it is not to big :)

If your not a professional and won't build houses but want a new tool harbor freight might be a good option. BTW the biggest sale on all tools is fathers day...NOT Christmas time or black Friday. If you want quality tool brands and can wait shop around Father's Day. Good luck! Make sure the vehicle is running good and not a rust bucket before building.

For those who think you should have kept the roll up door you should know those things are heavy and leak air like a screen. I would prefer to build a hinged wall, hinged at the bottom, that drops down, if you want security, and can be lowered to make a deck. A 12 volt 2000 lb HFwinch would raise and lower it easy. Then you could easily make a set of flat folding steps up to the deck, and some drop in railings to keep the dogs and kids from falling off the back deck. A small awning and you've got a perfect outdoor patio for watching sunsets. Heck, you could make it a screened in room like the Pop Up Campers have to keep the bugs out. I like the way your camper all came out, and would love to see a few windows on the sides to left the light in and create a cross breezes. My favorite part of my Class A RV is waking up in bed and looking out at the scenery outside our bedroom windows. Sometimes it a Pretty Lake, a cool river, snow covered mountains or just a big green forrest and birds flying about. Well done Cole Webb!

They're actually pretty expensive with non-insulated bare interiors, then the cost of making them livable. However, because of your video I remembered I'd seen these utility boxes taken off of the trucks and sold by themself very cheaply! I could buy one of these and convert it into a tiny home much cheaper than using pre-built storage buildings! So thanks for the idea, and as far as the Negative jerks go, we all could use fewer of them in this life.

Without an alternate door for exiting, it was a good idea to remove the original sliding door. Because otherwise someone could close it with people inside, and they'd be trapped.

I am so impressed with what you and your wife accomplished with this built - and without any real carpentry experience! Well done! And relationship goals, right there. Some very valuable tips - thanks for that - I'm getting ready to built one of my own. And cudos to you for acknowledging where you made mistakes. Hugs to you both from Zambia, Africa.

I have built 2 houses, one a 2 story and they are still standing after 3 hurricanes. I saw several things that you did that I would not have thought of, that made your build better and safer. Don't let anyone say otherwise. CONDRADS ON WHAT YOU ACCOMPLISHED.

I love it.....I 'm looking for a. U - haul to convert into living space why'll I travel for 6 months a year in the flea market circuit. Love what you did. Only difference I plan on using a couple of solar panels for energy that I'll remove them wheb traveling. Also I'm going to have a vent and a camper heat and air conditioning unit installed. Also I not removing the original van door its staying. Going to build a wall with a door and eitherone or two windows too. Like I said before great 👍 job love what you did. Ah some!.

I really want to pull the plug and do something like this. I love the ideas about insulating and framing in an efficient way. I will definitely be putting a wood burning stove in as well as looking at another way to heat off propane or what have you so that I can heat at a minimum temperature when I am away or give an option of not getting up in the middle of the night or trying to use wet wood. I'm curious as to if you thought about having the door swing out instead to save a bit of swing space but it looks like the top of the door might be a problem on the truck frame. I will have to think about that for my own build. Definitely like the more house-like look with framing the back. You don't want it to look like just a box truck you want it to be homey :)

Only thing I would’ve done was put a big door on the back so that it would lift out the the bottom and swing up so that you have an instant awning! For rain 👍🏻 but cool build ✌🏻🇨🇦

We saw that on some of the truck cap camper builds and liked the idea of a flip up door for the awning effect and a regular door for normal entry. With that space behind the outside window/door wall there's plenty of room too!

Great job overall. I'm hoping to find someone who's done something similar with the rear wall, but kept the rolling door. I'd like to do that if I can figure out how to keep the roll up door but still seal the inner wall.

awesome build!...respect. i am almost done with my stealth off-grid tiny house built inside an used penske e350 box truck, but it's TOTALLY different style than yours. lol, as i've discovered during my build, you can watch a million van/truck builds, but every vehicle is different, and all plans have issues and punches must be rolled-with. xD i will definitely post a video and maybe inspire someone like you have done. peace

If you find the box truck at Auction for $2,000 then I imagine only another $1,000 or less depending on how good of deals you find. Not rocket science or expensive to do that. If you do not have the tools or cannot borrow them, I would guess another $200 or less for cheap Harbor Freight or Walmart ones.
