In this video I explain and show you how you can convert your canvas tent so that you can put a wood burning stove inside. Some of the steps are changeable (in order), in the video I even mixed them up because I was thinking out loud as I was recording and then did it, and it changed based on the situation. So, if the video got confusing, I clear it up here :)
So:
Things you need:
- your canvas tent and your stove in your possession. You need to put your tent together and assemble your stove, put it inside and then decide where you will place it.
a a patch made specifically for this purpose. I found mine on Amazon. Measure your pipe and then order the correct size. Some pipes are 3" but mine was 6" in diameter and of course you have everything in between You need the exact size.
Here is a link for the patch on Amazon
UNISTRENGH Fire-Resistant Stove - www.amazon.com/dp/B07YXRKXKD?...
- upholstery thread, good needles, scissors, marker, strong glue
- you might need an elbow duct pipe, see about that in the next step
Step 1. put your tent up and assemble your stove. Bring the stove inside
Step 2. decide where your stove will go and where the pipes will exit. You can put it in the middle of the tent (great heat distribution) or towards any of the sides. Make sure there is enough distance between your stove and pipes and your tent wall. I would say at least 24 "
Depending on where you put the stove and depending on your tent, you might decide to put your pipe through the wall, so the pipes will go sideways. In this case you need to buy an elbow duct pipe. This can be 90 degree angle or 45 degree. (it's up to you and depends on your situation). Make sure you buy the furnace pipe! It's easy to find AC pipes at any hardware store for a few dollars, and based on my experience a lot of their employees don't even understand the difference, but you need one that will withstand high heat. They're much more expensive and harder to find. In my case, I went though the roof with the pipe.
Step 3. Draw a circle in the tent fabric, trace your pipe (hold it up against it)
Step 4. In my case, with my tent I was able to cut it out while the tent was standing, the fabric was fine. If your tent fabric is being pulled super tight by your poles, I'd suggest to break it down and then cut it out.
Step 5. You most likely have to break down your tent, especially if the pipe goes through the roof. Sew on the patch and then glue it. Inside, cut a much bigger circle, so make the diameter at least 1 inch bigger, maybe more. You do this to make sure your tent's fabric is not too close to the pipe.
Put your stove back in and see how it is. Then go camping and just be careful during the first time :)
For a great quality canvas tent I recommend www.kodiakcanvas.com and for a great wood burning stove I recommend www.coloradocylinderstoves.com.
The stove I have from them is excellent:
- everything fits inside
- the legs are screwed on and can be used to level the stove.
- The top of the stove is flat so you can cook anything on it. Some stoves are completely circular and I don't see how you can balance your things on top.
- It comes with an optional warming tray (I'd definitely get it) , you can pull your frying pan on it once your food is cooked and if you have a metal plate with your food, it can keep it warm. You can also use it as a makeshift table, as I did.
- you can also get an optional water container that easily attaches to the side (this is the only thing that won't fit inside) and fill it with water. It will be boiling, you can use it for soup or tea, or dehydrated food or even to melt snow.
Hopefully this was helpful, if you have any comments or questions, please let me know. Happy winter camping !
