In this video, Berklee Online instructor Loudon Stearns discusses how a speaker can function as a microphone. He explains that a speaker is essentially a reverse dynamic microphone, like an SM57, and that speakers make fantastic kick drum mics. Loudon takes an old speaker from a home theater system and demonstrates how to turn it into a microphone using a soldering iron, an old instrument cable, and a few other tools. Then, he tests the microphone with his interface, showing many different sound effects that can be achieved from the speaker-microphone. This video is from the Berklee Online course Sylvia Massy: Creative Approaches to Recording and Producing Music.
About Loudon Stearns and Sylvia Massy:
Loudon Stearns is an associate professor at Berklee College of Music, a course author and instructor at Berklee Online, and an active media-artist. Within the Contemporary Writing and Production department at Berklee College of Music, he prepares students to work as independent composers and producers in a technology-laden music industry. Online, he focuses on the latest electronic music styles and music-technology innovations, showing students how to analyze contemporary styles and use the latest music technology in their own works. Holding a Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Writing and Production and Bass Performance from Berklee College of Music, and a Master of Fine Arts in Media Art from Emerson College, Loudon pulls from a broad range of skills in the creation of his own multi-media performances that include live music, projection-mapping, dance, visual art and interactivity.
Sylvia Massy is a producer, mixer and engineer, and author, known for making some of the most unconventional recordings in contemporary music. She has recorded Johnny Cash, Prince, Tool, and many others in places that range from regular high-end studios to caves, castles, icebergs, and submarines.

Speakers are current driven with a much lower impedance than a typical dynamic microphone. It would work a lot better if you added a step up transformer like the ones used for ribbon microphones. You can make your own with a turn ratio of 1:10-1:30 roughly. You wouldn't need quite as high of a ratio of 1:37 as the ones for ribbon mics since the speaker already uses a coil.

Thanks for your comment. But how many turns in the primary coil is good to be multiplied 10-30 times? Can I grab a small toroid core and wrap 10 turns in the primary and 100 turns on it as the secondary, or 10 is too low?

I've been experimenting with different noise box designs--including a 10-foot trailer with a spring stretched across the entire length 😄😄--but have been frustrated by the inability of piezo contact mics to pick up the low ends. I've read different sources on using speakers as mics, but can YOUR method really be that SIMPLE? Definitely worth a try and, if the signal proves too weak, I have a spare preamp board somewhere. None of this should be very surprising to anyone who's ever used a Navy SOUND-Powered telephone, and there's even a trick the Army has used for their field telephones whenever the batteries ran low: speak into the RECEIVER! 😄😄

I suspect this has been done to my Sony boom box while I wasn't home. All my speakers go quiet on one side after I get something. This includes my truck. Great speaker system went dead on right side truck door after moving to this city. Everything I bring in house with dual sounds goes dead on one side after a while of having it. Things get moved, and some products get used like Survival Shield from Infowars is now empty. I unplugged the box today and even with unplugged that dead side made a radio sound when I put the jack back in. Also when I switched out the white to jacks the sound on good side went lower in volume. What did this tell you???

For the wiring, does it matter which one is soldered to positive or negative? I've read that it needs to be wired backwards from normal, but is that even necessary?

I knew or figured it that Speakers had to be reverse Microphone and reverse circuit ...like the same circuit in where current flows in reverse ....but There are differences in Circuit ......eg one has a magnet the other Mic has a Peizotropic Crystal........but what was or had to be a the way to convert the electric signal from both ......like Are the Ekectric signlas from a Mic are same Voltage or Current as the one goong into the Speaker ??? Or do we need to amplify the Current ...in the Speaker ...via A Transfirmer...Please discuss that ....same wiring would do....same Current ....will flow...or de we need to adjust the resistance of the wire ...

In short, no. One thing he forgot to mention in the video is that the polarity has to be reversed for the speaker to work as a mic. Meaning the positive (+) and negative ( - ) leads need to be switched. Hope that helps!
@Rollmops94
@Rollmops94 Жыл бұрын
@@samuelhastings9785 Why? The speaker is nothing but a coil. Into this coil a current is induced by change in magnetic field. If you swap polarities nothing changes as the only characteristics you hear are amplitude and frequency. Actually many DAW's let you swap polarities of recordings. If you play a recording twice at the exact same time (one swapped polarity and one unswapped) you hear nothing, which is another proof that the two are identical.

You have to use a differential amplifier to subtract the transmitted signal from the received signal. You also have to impedance match everything for every frequency to make sure that the transmitted and received signal don't come in out of phase. It's difficult but not impossible.
