Great video tutorial! I have 12 in the kitchen to do and thanks to you I have been able to do 2 per hour. I did optimize your workflow a bit: - loosen the 2 screws at the top of the can before removing the 4 screws that hold it in place -push the can up -do all the wire cutting, etc -feed the red & blue into the can to give more length for cutting, stripping, etc. -feed the red & blue back into the j box -finally bring the can down into place to install the light

So what steps do you remove if I were to use the male to female converter? Do I bypass all the rewiring and removal of the transformer box? Just remove bulb, add the converter and that's it? Also, any downside of using the converter vs rewiring? Also, I see the converter says I have to "remove or bypass the ballast"....is that same as transformer box?
@myLEDrebatescom
@myLEDrebatescom 5 жыл бұрын
@@ZenMika Ballast = transformer. The LEDs are self-ballasted, so they need power directly to them, not through the ballast/transformer. The socket adapter is an option, but the downside is that it is one more element that can fail over time.

I'm Electrically Challenged. I have a new house with nothing but GX24q-3 bulbs and want to convert it to LED like you did. Can you send me a step by step walk through of how you did it and/with what wires to connect? I don't want to spend $1000's on a Electrician if I can do it myself. I liked your idea instead of completely removing the Ballast and putting a whole new fixture in. I'd rather just bypass the Ballast and re-wire using Gx24q to E26 Lamp Base Converters.

Good video. Could lose the music. Onscreen text was helpful although went by pretty fast. Obviously, you can pause it. Question, though. Assuming you have a 14 gauge cable feeding the can and are using an LED that draws something like 10 watts; Can you connect the red and blacks which look to be 18's to the 14 gauge cable. Is that a risk?

+Trust Company, thanks for posting this video--it was just what I needed! My kitchen was remodeled 10 years ago, and at that time CFL's were "state of the art" city codes. Now the bulbs have started burning out, and you can't find them anymore, in all their different pin configurations, tube lengths, etc. They've become the ugly stepchild of lighting, what with mercury in them, and now that versatile LED's are the norm. Anyhow, you did it with 6 inch cans, so I was skeptical about being able to do this with my 4 inch cans, since I didn't think I could fit my hands in the smaller space to do all the cutting and splicing. So, having six fixtures I needed to swap out, I decided to do it from the attic space after all, in 95 degree heat of course... I did the first, most accessible one, and it worked so well using your method that I couldn't wait to finish the job and rid my kitchen of those damn CFL's for good. I converted four of them this way, soaking my clothes with sweat up there. When the last two were inaccessible, I decided I'd throw caution to the wind, now that I had the method down, and try them from below. I'm happy to report it was no problem to get into the 4 inch cans after all, and I wished I'd just done them ALL that way from the beginning, lol. Anyway, great video, very clear and informative; thank you again!

Love the video! Question, once you've removed the Transformer/Ballast, and you're left with the 4 wires, 2 reds and 2 blue, does it matter which blue wire or which red wire you use to connect the white and black wire? Just wondering which blue and red wire to discard or not use. Wasn't sure if it mattered or not.
@billcowan8349
@billcowan8349 4 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't matter. You can even use both red wires together on the black, and both blue wires on the white. But not necessary if only using LED lights.

Excellent video with how-to-instructions. I have three comments to mention if you could assist replying; my ballast is a bit different, wires don't protrude out of the box like yours and others I've seen before, and there are a total of 14 wires (two sets of Black and Blue together, two sets of Red and White together, two Whites together, a Blue and Black together and two Greens and a Ground bound together as well). I haven't started removing/replacing them yet with hope that you might come back with some advise. Thanks, by the way, what band plays the cool music in your video?

Any issue with the having the terminations exposed inside the can? Potential code and/or safety issue? Perhaps this retrofit is best done with an LED can that comes with a junction box? Great video, very well done, thanks!

I would remove it, but the can I have doesn't have the transformer in the front as your video shows. Theres 2 holes on the bottom rear of the J-box where the red/blue and black/white wires go to so I believe the transformer is in the rear of the J-box. This makes it difficult to remove because its not easily accessible. Thank you for your response!

I was doing a quick conversion 10 yeara ago. They didn't have the adapters then, or werent common and expensive. It would have taken me much more time to have removed the ballast. So after 10 years, one ballast is kind of bad, and burns out an LED bulb after 6 months, 4 hours a day. Eneded up replacing that one in my kitchen with a squiggly. Squigglys are less prone to voltage spike issues, and they last about two years in thag one socket. The other 6 kitchen led bulbs in othwr sockets haven't burnt out. Extra energy consumption is about one extra watt with a good ballast. For a bad ballast???
