With this suman malagkit , I never add sugar only salt to taste like my Lola used to do because we use to pour coconut caramel on it . She would make coconut caramel using brown sugar until thick and jar it. It lasts awhile unless we sneak to snack on it to satisfy our sweet tooth. The Bisayans call it " latik " but in the northern region latik is different .

we in Indonesia have this also precisely on the eastern island of Borneo, but we cook it in bamboo and cover it with banana leaves, we name it Suman,, But we cook it by roasting on the ground using a lot of coals

Omg we also have something similar to this in malaysia. We use different leaves instead of banana leaves. We eat it with sate/satay peanut gravy/sauce

You can add toasted fennel seeds. They smell wonderful. My grandma's recipe. She uses the young banana leaves so she can mould them into long round suman not flat like on this video.

i do that too mam moulding it into round but not for suman malagkit i did that only for suman moron or suman cassava sa latik, but the fennel seeds i dont like, im not enjoying eating suman with fennel seeds... ofcourse you can add fennel seeds on it if you prefer to...

Have you tried adding fennel seeds to the batter for banana or saba fritters ? That's the only instance I use fennel seeds.

Bisaya suman they dont add sugar, just salt not too much just a hint of saltiness, then cook the same way as this channel. The sweetnes comes from pairing with ripe mangoes. I ate Antipolo suman, no sugar, no salt it’s bland. I am lucky we have lots of banana trees in our backyard so when I see Costco mango i cook suman . So good for merienda and for breakfast.
