The big core bits need 1st gear, medium 2nd & under 2 inch-3rd gear, otherwise your drill motor will self destruct (thankx-4-uploading)

Great tip with the laser. Only thing I'd add is that, in my opinion, you should use a torque bar on the drill and support it the correct way. Some drills have a tight clutch and if the core jams, having the torque bar could prevent injury.

PTFE on the thread is also useful instead of the neoprene washers, for easier removal of the bit

The O ring tips a game changer. I leant my core bit set to a sparkie on site and he welded the extension bar and arbour together. Typical Electrician. On a side note I believe the tool to remove the pilot bits called a drift. :)

My golden piece of advice is to drill a small diameter, smaller than the pilot bit, guide hole all the way through the wall. This has two benefits: first, you can drill most of the hole from the outside avoiding break-out of the brick facing and it reduces the amount of dust inside the house; Second, the the guide hole provides a continuous path for the pilot bit to follow and the core bit will remain concentric with it. This second point is especially important since if you just rely on the pilot bit to provide a guide path it may wander off centre and then your core bit, now no longer concentric with it, will jam up with brick material. This effect seems to be worse when drilling into exposed wet walls and the ‘dust’ instead becomes a clogging wet clay.

Here's his tip: for heavy drilling above your shoulder height and use a secure and stable plarform. Head injuries are no good. Used later on in the video. Loved the wall tie discovery - how to change a twenty minute job into a two hour one.

I was drilling core drills 30 years ago and never used a laser level A D NEVER HAD A PROBLEM LINING IT UP BY EYE. EASIER WAY OF DOING THIS JOB IS 1ST DILL A PILOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE WALL . GO OUTSIDE, CORE DRILL FROM OUTSIDE IN UNTILL YOU GET TO THE TILE, AND THEN FINISH OFF CUTTING THE TILE. YOU DONT HAVE AS MUCH MESS INSIDE , ALL THE MESS IS OUTSIDE. JOB DONE !!

That laser level is quite a good idea. I usually do them fairly good by eye - by i've cored out a few fans which were a right git to fit afterwards! I'm a spark and only do 4, 5 and sometimes 6 inch holes. I got me a Bosch GSB 162-2RE recently and its pure bliss to use. Pisses through anything I've come acorss so far. Evan a 6" was no trouble. Its quite a beast and not cheap - but so much easier and faster than SDS for fans. 1600 watt I think. I lent it to a plumber for a day and he brought one himself that evening he was so impressed with it.

I remember when I was an apprentice and I got the fantastic job of core drilling 9 holes in reinforced concrete in a hospital for the job we where on , character building they told me 😢😂

Brilliant video. Learned a lot, especially that you can drill at such a large size and go through the wall without blowing out the brickwork externally. I install Air Conditioning and see this all the time with inexperienced trades people. Then they try to just bung the blown out holes with either silicon, expanding foam or sand and cement, which is disgraceful. The laser tip I especially found helpful. Thanks again. P.S. Would love to know the model of the drill you use as I am in the market for a new one.

I have got that drill , didnt think its meant for core drilling ?? I saw a guy smash his eye socket and break his nose using a regular drill while core drilling when the core got stuck and the drill kicked out and I've nearly broke my wrist using the wrong drill. I would only use a dedicated core drill

Doesn’t cover the need to drill the last couple of inches from the outside , in. This will avoid break-away of the outside wall surface, particularly if it happens to be rendered.

Wouldnt you drill through at a slight downward angle? (from inside the house) to help avoid rain water running back down the pipe through? You mentioned to go in horizontal ....

a bit of copper wire of copper slip will also stop the bit sticking to a chuck. Also when removing a bolster and foot in and on the diamond bit vent helps to hold it from twisting when removing it if its stubborn.

I use a copper 22mm olive. Brass is no good, it doesn't crush down.

Please 🙏 🙏 🙏 can you help me. I am fitting a cooker hood in my kitchen, and it has I silver flexy pipe 6" to go through the wall BUT the old fan needed a 4" hole. Is there a way to make the 4" hole into a 6" hole, or should I put a reducer on it instead.?????

note to James, ear defenders are also a must, throughout all stages of the drilling. The best core bits in the business are these: Spectrum BZX ZENITH Dry Diamond Core, if you can afford them they eat brick and concrete for breakfast.

Great video... As a bricklayer allways cut the brickwork from the face side , not from the inside to the outside. This generally ends up causing serious damage to the face brickwork...

Yes, the face can blow out pushed from behind. Replacing ties in a edwardian facade we had to erect scaffold instead of just accessing internally because of this.

I use the Bosch SDS combi drill which is cabled then the vacuum is turned on and off by the power button on the drill. I tried cordless and went back to this.

Any tips on how to remove bits stuck in the chuck? 😂 I've just finished a core for a 110mm waste through double brick cavity (with external render). Nothing broke per se, but the little BB in the chuck is jammed, so the bit won't release. And even though I sprayed the threads with PTFE, the SDS bit is seized to the extension, which is seized to the core cup. Spanners & hammers just isn't doing it. I'm in a right old pickle. I'll be able to cut loads of large cores, but fk'all else.

Another tip for Resharping your drill bit is to tap the teeth with a Metal file To expose the diamonds. This will increase the speed of your drilling and it will take half the time

not really needed, the thing comes with a "pilot" drill bit anyway. It's easier to start the hole so the coring bit's pilot can take over.

OK that's all well and good for a normal two brick and cavity wall. Now my house is 170 years old with 850mm thick solid wall with loose fill in the centre. How do you tackle that 😂

Whats the point in using slotted cores with a vacuum - use solid body cores and the dust extraction works a treat. Why waste time removing the wall ties as they can take ages to remove and the core cuts through them fairly easily. And why did you drill horizontally instead of drilling downwards at a shallow angle to prevent any rainwater backtracking into the building?

Those diamond bits are meant to be used at a much higher speed than the 1500RPM the SDS can muster. Even a corded drill bill not go above 2000 RPM. That is why an angle grinder with about 9000 RPM is the correct tool for the job. These bits Mill not drill. An SDS is about max pressure and grinding away. The angle grinder will mill the surface but at higher speeds without the same pressure, just move the tolerance from side to side and up and down. This will keep it cooler, and extend the life of the diamonds.

It would be interesting to see the wall detector in more detail. I have Bosch's much cheaper version and it's never worked properly (and I've had several of them) - it's always showing the wall as being live even when there's no wiring in the wall - WHATS GOING ON BOSCH if you are reading this?

Pro tip: you can buy a longer guide that sits further in the pilot hole. Less chance of it flying off in the wrong direction

Did you mention that the drill should just be in turning mode, not hammering? NB! And yeah let the tool work, don't force it. And be prepared for the bit binding, which can be a real arm twister.

Why not just stitch drill the wall around a circle template, avoiding the need to buy core bits or risk them jamming in the wall?

Not nearly as clean of a hole, each bit punching through can cause blowout, and you have to drill a lot of holes for a big hole like this. Can work though.

@@ravenstarver1360 - A heck of a lot of holes true, but core bits seem pretty slow as well. And the fan body should cover up those rough edges. As for blow-out, I'd suggest turning off hammer action before you reach full depth of the wall.

Don’t bother with the o ring trick . When it jams in the wall you won’t be able to reverse out without unwinding the core bit from the arbor.

Just hired a brand new hilti core drill for a job and the b*#ch locked up on me so many times it nearly broke my arm. For some reason it just didnt clutch! Told the hire company and they said “must be the user not the drill” friggin cheek. Please beware 👍🏼👊🏼
