Hi Tom, I teach all my dogs the hand signals as well as the verbal commands. From my experience with my prev dog who got old, and deaf in the process, it was a great help that he knew the hand signals too, as I could still command him when he could no longer hear. So I do think there is room for both, and totally understand what you’re getting at, ie if the dog doesn’t do the command when one or the other or both, they don’t know it. So I also practice both together & separate. But anyway, my point was that IMO there is def room for both verbal & hand signals especially as they get older. 🐾
@spankey88
@spankey88 4 жыл бұрын
christine da silva I’ve also used hand signs for the main commands but I never thought about being so useful if they lose their hearing but it’s nice if you’re talking to someone and want them to sit or stay... or attack a cult leader

Christine Da Silva. I do the same. Have a new Australian Labradoodle puppy now and using hand signals as well and yes dogs do lose their hearing. Our Shepard lived to age 16 and had lost all of her faculties. Deaf, blind and barely walking with hip and knee problems. When she lost bladder control , all life went out of her and had to put her down. Still have fond memories of our 3 dogs over the years. They all have their own personalities.

@@AnyaSiberia I mainly worked with her inside teaching her 'heel (which she still struggles with), sitting until I say break and also using a prong collar. A prong collar helped so much with pulling and over reacting towards seeing dogs, she still whines but from the videos I've seen from this channel whining is pretty much involuntary at the moment. She still has her moments where she wants to act like a jerk but I think that's just her personality lol

Great Video! I don't always remember this myself, But , I can remember explaining to my grandson 2-3yrs ago, he was about 10ish, and was trying to make my 9 ish yr old GSD go into their kennel I. The back yard, I went in there and told my grandson to stand up Very straight, and to think Positive, he's Going to listen to me, Expect that he will listen to you, and use a firm confident voice, and guess what, Ace/GSD Went right into the kennel😁...

So, that being said, I have a question regarding my 15 month old GSD whom I've had since he was 4 months old, I believe he wasn't socialized enough and being Fearful is genetic , as his Damm/mother was skittish(gosh if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't of got him, but he has been a blessing in so many ways) I need him to be my Service Dog, mainly for balance issues, but he is still Very fearful of people, city noises, like semi-trucks ect. Should I accept now that he won't get past this or? I spose I should do a phone consult? I have met with my granddaughters twice in town to eak around some and it helps to have another dog, but he doesn't concentrate on me like he should, and would it be better if I had someone else work with him? He Rarely ever tries to make new friends and I am the only 1 who has ever walked him, and I feel that I am not confident like I should be as I worry about potential fall at times?
@Jemrisla
@Jemrisla 4 жыл бұрын
@@annad5529 It takes a very special dog to be a service dog, they need to be very stable and bombproof. They can't be fearful or reactive. A service dog is assessed several times while with the breeder to see if they're a potential good fit, and training begins from 8 weeks old. I doubt at 15mths old your dog will be able to catch up on the critical socialisation period and early learning to the point of becoming a suitable service dog. That being said, I do suggest that you have your GSD assessed to see where you stand and what your possibilities are. Best of luck!

Thanks for all the videos! They are very helpful. I wonder if you can do a video or respond in comment...or point me to an existing video about a situation I am having. I have a 14 week old GSD. Whenever he gets excited, I or someone in my family becomes a chew toy. And when i leave for work in the morning he seems to go crazy, trying to chew everything in his path. We have tried making him sit, going into training, making a leash/collar correction, using "no" command, "leave it", pinching his tongue to his lower jaw, crate time out, giving him something appropriate to chew on and even more recently a small pop on his muzzle. I am not sure what to do at this point to help. In your experience how should I be handling this situation?

This is my problem at home with my dog like u just said he sits, lays, rolls over and gives paw, in the house only. But when we go outside he zones me out. So what can I do to transition the behavior outside for him to focus on me? (There is dogs outside that roam free in my land, so when my dog sees them that's when he does not listen to me. He just bit me yesterday when I was trying to block him to not look at the other dog.) I HOPE YOU READ THIS 🙂

What happens when he zones you out while outside? if you don't do anything and just allow him to walk, he knows there are no consequences for ignoring so why bother doing listening to you? You need to show him he needs to listen to you; give him a leash pop, or show him physically what you want him to do.
@wendyDarling26
@wendyDarling26 4 жыл бұрын
We are working on a similar problem. Dogs outside are a big temptation. Leash is a must, because your dog needs to understand that it's on your terms whether or not they get to meet andd greet another dog. We turn and walk in opposite direction if he pulls. What really helped us was putting more time into outdoor activities where we play together - running, fetch, just playing together, so he is focused on us (focus on us equals great time). We incorporated tricks into fetch (do something you know and we toss you the ball), and even eliminated the "going home problem" easily with the ball (he gets the ball again once inside the building, so he is happy to go back), because he didn't want to leave the park :D. As for the obedience - dogs don't really generalise well, so you need to practise in a lot of situations, with lots of variables, for example our dog didn't understand how to "sit" when he was in the "down", even though he knew "sit".

My first dog was a 95lb GSD two year old male from Germany. I have grown up around GSDs, but he was my dog. I made so many mistakes according to the videos I've seen. Yet 500, 1,000ft, he'd come when I called. If I raised my voice in a serious manner, he'd lean against me until he knew we were right before he'd go and do his thing. He was great with strangers and strange dogs. Even with bitches in heat he would, reluctantly, listen to me. He used eye signals to communicate with me. Literally, he would look towards the door to say let's go outside. He would ask to stay outside and either I would agree or look it's raining, inside. Anything I tried to teach him, he did in two or three tries. He baited me in play, little butthole, he made a game. And he'd do his I'm so proud of myself trot. Just one more minute of being outside with him ... I'd give anything. I lost a friend and I haven't been right since. I never experienced what I have seen in these videos despite 30 or so GSDs. Honestly, it breaks my heart. These are good doggies. I see the care in every movement you make. I taught in troubled middle school areas. I'm weak and broke down. There is nothing wrong with our children what is wrong is us. Long story. I am so grateful for this channel and what you do. I hope it grows. I'm sharing the word. Keep delivering the message.

Hey, Tom! Serious question here: What do you think of the method of correction in which you use a verbal correction coupled with a poke in the ribs, thigh, or front of the shoulder? I can see one benefit to it which is that if your dog happens to be off leash at a moment when you need to correct them, then you have another way of doing it. However, there are also many schools of thought who would shy away from this for fear of making the dog "hand-shy" or that it is difficult to do correctly or feels to the owner like they're "hitting" the dog. What do you think?

I absolutely love him to pieces. But we are struggling with obedience. We are taking puppy classes at PetSmart. I work with him every day. He’s incredibly smart and friendly as well as fresh. I’m at a loss as to how to get him to understand I’m in charge. The fuck you mommy attitude is unnecessary 😂😂😂. I do my puppy homework everyday and apply what I’ve learned. Yet we continue to butt heads when he’s corrected. I’m doing something wrong and can’t wait to get my tax returns so we can schedule a boot camp weekend 😊. It’ll be my vacation for the year.

When my older dog leave her, she will tease him, and it happen all over again. The problem is my older dog doesn't correct her, he just continue playing, but i dont want him to get hurt.. what should i do?

Basically ALL of the new stuff is like the commercial for an episode of Cesar 911 or Dog Whisperer.. I think Tom is an incredible trainer. He gets it. He can see things coming from a mile away. And he is GREAT about getting his point across, especially for first timers. BUT! LoL... These new videos are so repetitive and bland. They are like a commercial. Or like a get rick quick scheme that tells you all about getting rich and how effective this plan is. But first give me a thousand dollars before I can tell you what the plan actually IS. For these people, that was a great introduction. I'd be pretty annoyed however if I spent money for someone to tell me that I don't know what I'm doing and to show me how great they are. Tom's dog is obviously very well trained and well behaved. It is very cool to see how incredible (Koda I think?..) is. I wish you guys were still releasing real training videos. Something deeper than just surface BS. This is a great video if your only goal is to get people to pay to fly out and get direct one on one training. Or to do a webcam training session. These videos all feel like commercials. It's cool if that is what you want to do now. If you're not into giving out information anymore without getting paid. That's 100% your right. But if this channel is to impart knowledge like it used to be, it would be great if we could go beyond the opening session every single post! It would be different if this was just the beginning or if this type of video was released here and there. But it is EVERY SINGLE VIDEO now... Even other ones that claim to be a series is just a longer version of this. I'd love to see a video about body language. How to catch the signs before an action occurs. Something about watching for triggers before your animal is attacked by another either on or off leash. Or for stopping your animal before they lash out. Or is this play or not play. Or how to tell when your dog is really calm. If you're trying to get over separation anxiety. How to tell if your dog is just anxious and sitting or actually calm and sitting. How to tell if you're walking a dog who is heeling properly, or if they are wound up by just staying by your side. Difficult cases, going deeper than step one. Where we can see multiple approaches and then which approach worked for that dog. It's so interesting to see a pro/master go through multiple methods to achieve a goal. Even when something doesn't work it is great for us to learn that is something you can TRY. This was kind of a ramble, but hopefully I got a point across. I'm a huge fan and would even pay a Patreon or something to be able to have access to episodes beyond the surface commercial. Thanks for the info you have put out there! Some of your older videos were incredibly helpful to me! More depth than Cesar. More engaging, entertaining, and informative than other KZfaqrs. The info about modern tools and how to use them, awesome. My pup is absolutely the most well behaved out of any of our Dog Park friends, or personal friends. I say thanks to you for that. Thank you!

Does anyone else's dog not like toys? She doesn't hate them but she has never had any interest in them except ONCE during christmas she got a little santa boot pink toy and chewed it till it was like all used up in a month. Then lost interest in it. She was a puppy then but before that toy i had tried others. Balls, chew toys, squeaky or non squeaky, bone like chew toys, ropes etc. I even made her some myself but she did not care. So i have nothing to play with her. I usually just chase her around but she gets sick of it soon.

If you can help me with my Eastern European Shepherd that is 125lbs She is my service dog, I am a disabled veteran I would be greatful, she was abused before I got her and trained her, but she has some issues I can't seem to fix. Cats, squirrels, little dogs that yap at her, reflections in glass from bright sunlight and loud trucks/buses... For the record she has an incredible pursuit instinct/reflex... OR flight reflex(the truck thing)... She is my partner in life now so I can't have anything that will cost me to loose her...

So how do I correct my dog's bad behavior? You've identified the problems at home or during training but did not provide a solution or a suggestion. Showing the end result doesn't help me in correcting my dog's bad behavior. Sure it shows that you know how but you failed to tell your audience. It's still a good video but the title is misleading.

The information is definitely there. If your dog has ‘bad’ behaviour then you are likely not clear in what you want, and you do not have a relationship. The solution is YOU putting the work in. He has plenty of other videos dealing with specifics if that’s what you need. There is no magic wand. Learn, and work. Change your behaviour.

well I mean, now we know that this dog doesn't know his commands. This video was titeld "how to correct your dog" but I learned no techniques to correct bad behavior. I just learned that this dog HAS bad behavior. Now what? How do I train him to stay in a different environment? How do you make commands stick? How do you scold him right? What type of correction works?

He pointed out that the training routine was always done in the same way, the same place and always with food. In the video it was the kitchen by the cookie jar. Try changing up your training. Sometimes don’t give food, use your voice and hands to praise, then use the food again. Do you always train in the kitchen, move around the house. Do you always use the sit command first, mix up the order of your commands, come first, or down first, etc… changing up your training routine helps the dog to understand you want “sit” everywhere in the house, then you move outside, with the dog on a lead and start the process all over. This is the how to train part of the video he described. The corrections part was simply that you have to be very consistent in your corrections. A lot of people don’t want to do the work of being consistent with what you already do. The type of corrections to give your dog might be what you are interested in and different dogs need different types and levels of correction. However, not being consistent, every time AND immediately is usually the problem that most dog owners have. Making the dog obey only sometimes and not right away is the biggest problems with a lot of our dogs bad behaviors. When this happens, we are being clear as mad to our dogs. I hope that helps.
