Using a whip effectively can be a very important skill for riding, but even just holding one, let alone using it on the horse, can feel awkward and cumbersome.
In today's video, I help you understand whips and how to use one effectively. We start by looking at different types of whips, then I show you how to use a whip, and give you suggestions for practicing.

This is a very nice video. I always felt awful when I had to use the whip because once you try it on your leg you feel how painful it is and it also has not anything to do with harmony. This method is painless and allows you to really communicate with your horse. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us, making some horse's lifes better!

This is often a mistake in the horse world, alot of people think that whips are to inflict pain and not purely for communication, oh how naive they are. Good that you learned something here and hopefully will change this habit for yourself and perhaps others.

There's a few picky people on here you need to watch and learn what Callie is saying, she was tapping with the whip (not beating the horse with it) which made sense to me, because my horse won't move off on the leg when he's being stubborn. Great video Callie thanks.

This seems like a very logical and sensible way to use a whip. I was fed up of my instructors handing me a whip/crop during group lessons without explaining anything about them, and telling me to hit the horse's shoulder/ass with it. Most of the instructors had a "the horse is being lazy/taking the piss/taking the mickey" attitude towards riding and told me to "be the boss" a lot. I now think that it's a load of bullshit and can't see myself tolerating instructors like that. I'll try to stick to private lessons too. One of my favourite lessons was with an instructor who went through everything in great detail rather than rushing. I had trotted quite a bit before, but we focussed on riding aids while just walking, which was very beneficial.

yeah i had my first lesson at a new barn yesterday and i had a private. i learnt a lot and my instructor told me that if the horse doesnt listen to your leg aids its quicker and more comfortable for the horse to just have a little tap with the whip so he learns to listen to your leg aids

Verrrrrry late but I 100% agree! I hate those instructors that just tell you to smack the horse because they want to see results and speed instantly, and then a few years down the line they write the horse off as "lazy, insensitive" etc. because they didn't think about that in the long run!

I think "being the boss" is a very important dynamic that needs to be maintained to give the horse purpose. It sees you as an authority figure that it has to do a job for, and gives them a reason for living.

For those of you who are being critical of using a whip/crop - there is more pain delivered to a horse through the bit, the heel of your foot, your particular saddle, and the way you might sit on the horses back. You are associating her use of the whip with PAIN. She is NOT delivering PAIN to the horse with her method. She is sending a cue or signal to get the horse’s attention using RHYTHM. Before you watch a video, please clear your minds of past mis-information or poor experience. This kind of criticism only reinforces ignorance.

What an excellent video,well presented instruction. Was not sure about the tapping. Not been riding very long. So decided to try this against my bare leg as I thought may hurt my horse. Felt only a very mild sting did not really hurt at all. Even after a couple of minutes of use. Was no ill effect on my skin. No marks or welts left. Can now use with confidence Thanks

I was scared to use the whip or crop because in old years it was essentially a punishment for horses ! 😏😥 In some schools you still do like that.😰 Now I discovered that only the noise of the crop on the saddle can make my old race TB horse move forward easily. Perhaps because she was a race horse ! 🤔🏇 In other cases I try to avoid any of them but I think the way you use it Callie can be very helpful as a TOOL TO COMMUNICATE with your horse! I just bought a whip like the one you use, I 'll try to make like you the next time I' ll be able to ride. I 'll make exercises at home at first. (Holding a whip is not very easy so exercise before is a good idea !). Thank you very much for your very clear video as usually dear Callie.🙏🙏😁👍🏻

Thanks for showing us how to use the whip. I don't know many instructors, if any, that focus on using the whip and it is an important aid. Used wrong or timed incorrectly can produce the wrong result or none at all. I tend to use my hand to move the whip which actually moves the horse's head. Not what I want. I've also been told that it's important to time the whip with the movement of the horse's hind leg. Not sure how to do this. In fact, when I ride I don't know when the hind leg is going up or when it hits the ground. Perhaps you can discuss this in one of your lessons. As always thanks for your informative videos. They are truly one of the best and cover areas that most others do not.

it might be too late to comment on this video, but I'll try. Excellent advice and I hope a lot of folks watched this! Question though: I was always trained to use the whip on the inside rather than outside (of the horse's direction). Is there a rule about that? I think the idea was to keep the horse from falling inward away from the whip and to increase impulsion of the inside hind leg.

You need to show the horse that the whip isnt gonna hurt him, rub it all over him until he calms down and relaxes and give him treats, the whip should only be an extention of your arm to simply tap him on the shoulder to let him know you want him move a little faster.

It doesn't necessarily mean that he has been abused. If he has never seen a whip before you started to ride him, it is probably going to scare him, just like mailboxes, plastic bags and other things that are unknown to the horse can scare him. There are different ways to introduce new things to horses in order to make them less scared. Warwick Schiller has a method that he calls CAT-H, in Natural Horsemanship there are other methods that they use to get similar results. You can find yt videos on the topic, just make sure that the method is soft and takes the horse's feelings into consideration, otherwise he can get too overwhelmed and flooded which can lead to him 'exploding' at some point later on if he starts to come out of his bubble.

Bullwhips, stockwhips, black snakes, signal whips, cow whips, bullock whips, driving coach whips, and lunge whips are all considered whips to me. I would love to see a vid of a whip that cracks if you own any of those type of whips. @CRKtraining.

Wips/crops should NEVER be used for punishment- as a gentle aid I have learned they can be an effective tool, but just NEVER with force... I was so hesitant to use one, but my lesson horse is LAZY, haha...Trotting ain't (😝) gonna happen without a few taps on the rump/side of saddle pad... And of course I only use it under the advice and supervision of my instructor. I had a lot of misconceptions about tools like crops and spurs, but they can be useful if used gently and in the proper way at the proper time...

Do you beat the horse with it? How I see people using it is they hit the horse's flank or shoulder very hard and they hit it repeatedly to get the horse going, while some others crack the whip right next to the horse's flank to scare it into running. I don't see you using any of these techniques, does it hurt the horse at all when you hit them with it? And how does the whip encourage the horse to move? I've heard several things like natural fear instinct, pain, or pressure cues. Could someone clear this up for me?

I always thought a whip was a extension of my legs. I am always too sweet for my horse and I hear the trainer say: get angry she doesn’t listen! And bc I don’t give hard enough kicks (sry don’t know the English word) I can use a whip so what I usually do is: give a soft kick, horse doesn’t listen, I try to do it harder, doesn’t listen again, I try to do it harder again and I use the whip. So I will never punish a horse with a whip

lets be real here, tapping CAN hurt the horse depending on the amount of pressure your arm creates. the pressure/pain increases when the horse disobeys so it IS essentially a punishment which I see nothing wrong with but you should not sugar coat this fact to sound like a kind person. whipping a horse is not kind at all, but it can still be justified if a horse is acting up

I'm not trying to be rude but I'm just saying that u should be very thankful for those items. And so u know, most riders first fall when they canter. And when you fall, the helmet you wore is no longer able to be used because it will not be up to safety standards anymore even if it looks exactly the same. I would recommend for you to buy a ovation schooler helmet which runs for about $45 and put your helmet away for showing because it is a show helmet and those are VERY EXPENSIVE and I'm sure u don't want to purchase that item again due to the price. If I were you, I would take my word to save your bank account. I'm not trying to be rude but I just want to give a fellow equestrian some advice. Welcome to the equestrian world!

You cant say you love horses if you whip them i dont give two craps if it works you know it hurts the horse SO DONT DO IT Rather instead of abusing it try training it with rewards

@breyerhorse 123 so you'd rather abuse the horse than spend some more time or get a little more creative when it comes to rewarding? it's a damn shame horse world is full of such pricks who don't give a shit about those sensitive animals

Eva this is not what she means. She means that it would take forever to get things done when you’re riding and every time they do something good throughout the ride, you get off and give treats. Instead, she’s give treats after the WHOLE ride ends.

That's because it's not trot. In trot the horses diagonal pair of legs move at the same time. In this video the horse isn't trotting. But I'm not saying it's a bad thing. There are horses who have different movements. Like the gaited horses.

It depends on how the horse reacts ,because the white horse clearly didn’t like it so why would you use it if it wasn’t working, but the other one was responding well so it would work to use it.

How about this: my leg aids should be used ONCE to tell the horse what to do. I ask, they respond, I release pressure, the cycle continues, it's a constant conversation. It is not good for me or my horse if I am nagging, nagging, nagging multiple times to get them to do what I ask. I ask once to, let's say, trot and if they do not trot after I ask the first time, then I tap LIGHTLY behind my leg or maybe even just wave the whip by my leg to ask a second time. In this way, the whip is a reenforcement. It's probably irritating, but not painful, and I stop once the horse does what I've asked. I recently did this with a horse and after only a few conversations and wiggles of the whip she was minding my leg aids on the first ask, every time for the rest of the ride. Much better than constantly kick....kick....KICK LET'S PLEASE JUST TROT!

Gross. Whipping an animal. It hurts or they wouldn't be doing an avoidance behavior to make it stop. Stop lying about how "nice" you do it. You're still just whipping an animal.

I think its good that she isn't using a normal crop and she's using it correctly, not for pain but as an extension of her arm as a learning tool, not a pain device. She could be one of the riders that beat her horse with a crop for pain but she isn't and you should respect that. Go yell at someone that is actually causing a horse pain using a whip than someone who is using it responsibly.

if you have to use a whip you don't deserve a horse let alone offer training advice. stop thinking like a human and start understanding your horse. If he is stubborn,pushy, refusing commands then he is telling you that something is wrong. stop and listen.
@summerruby201
@summerruby201 6 жыл бұрын
Rika Adjule 'Stop thinking like a human" Yeah, one major issue with that is, we can't. We are human so logically we can only think like a human an not like an animal. An animal can only think in basic terms and connections, while we humans have a much more complex level of understanding and thinking. That is why we have dominion over them.
