If only you've seen how far the Pizza Box challenge has come. We live in a dystopian future where we have 5 vs 4 pizza squads. Mario has four Luigi's defending him from four Toads trying to steal the delicious pizza. My childhood mind would have exploded.

My favorite example of this would have to be when I played legend of Zelda wind waker as a child. At the time I was pretty young so I had no idea that you can access A MAP, So I would go around trying to find any island that I could and remembering its location to other ones I even Drew my OWN map. In the end it made it much more of an adventure game. Often I would find islands I could not access or islands that had mechanics that weren't available to me yet, or puzzles that didn't make sense. But in the end where I found those and everything fit together it was very satisfying. I BEAT it this way as a kid, and I honestly don't think I'd have the patience now, but my point is, the world was suddenly much larger and the feeling of travel was stressful, you never really knew if you were on the right course to that island you found on accident a few weeks ago.... I remember getting my kicks in Wind Waker by going to Windfall Island, making it nighttime, putting on the Hero's Mask, Iron Boots, whipping out the skull hammer, and activating magic shield, and pretending to by some scary ghost monster keeping everyone hiding in their homes.

I played hide and seek in mario kart wii. At first, we did a lap, and the last one to cross the finish line was the seeker. The others went to hide. The problem with this is that you could see where the others were by looking at other screens. My cousin found a way in daisy's stage to have his entire screen covered with a leaf. Daisy's stage was pretty much our favorite. We found a place that was really hard to reach and the seeker had to find how to get there. We once made a trap with bananas in a sidewalk. The only way he could touch us was through that way, so whatever he did, he drove into bananas and couldn't touch us. It was awsome!

I remember when the original Super Smash Bros came out, one of my friends made his own story mode with specific stages and match-ups like the Great Fox stage was our characters going to a distant planet and then Dreamland was where they landed to explore the planet, it was really fun.

This one isnt really “incorrect,” more of a creative play version, but I loved playing “blind Mario Kart” as a kid (and even now... esp when drunk) One person has the remote and is blindfolded. Someone sits behind them and tells them how to navigate the vehicle. It sounds super basic & very simple, right? No no no. Those controls are sensitive, a “turn left” will quickly become a “YOURE GOING BACKWARDS NOW DUMBASS” or a “DONT NO NO YOU FELL OFF THE ROAD” Extra bonus if you play with 4 or 6 people, it gets super loud and chaotic SO quickly but its TONS of fun.

I didn't know Pokémon Hobo mode was a thing and I've been playing it for years.

another cool example of a player restricted gamemode making into the official game is RuneScape's Ironman mode, this mode forces the player to EARN everything they have, not allowing them to trade with other players or use the Grand Exchange, which is something that is integral to the RS experience and MMOs in general (it all started from a youtube series) i REALLY wanted to watch your persona video, but i need to complete the 2nd palace before i watch it (had a friend who beat the game scout it out for me) so ill check it out soon!

Me and my friends once came up with a game in Kirby’s Air Ride that was basically “Hydra Tag”. One player gets the Hydra and runs around the City Trial map trying to smack into the other players, who are ride-less. If you don’t know, the Hydra is an ultra-fast ride that zooms across the map like a bat out of hell. Two strikes and you’re out and become the Hydra rider, and whoever has the longest time not being the rider wins. It was fun since if you smacked someone with the Hydra they would go flying across the map at mach fucking 12, so it made comboing one person difficult since matches had a time limit of 10 minutes. This meant that the rider actually had to be strategic in who he went after. I should also say that strikes were carried over even if new riders boarded Hydra, and that the second the new rider regains control of Kirby he is technically the new rider and thus time continues to count down. We’d come up with tons of new strategies, like standing on the grind rails so the rider would get pulled onto them if he tried to run us over, but then he would start jumping off buildings into us, and it was all sorts of fun.

i remember the day I got F Zero X for the N64. there is this mode where you have to destroy all your opponents, the race goes on forever until you die or you've killed everyone else. i loved this mode. Oh yeah I should mention that I didnt know that you can do attacks and slams etc. so I slowly wiggled their health down by just bumping into them. took me 2 hours on average to finish one race. and oh boy, I had so much fun, it was such a thrill

this reminds me of when i was 6 or 8 i don't remember exactly, but i was playing lego star wars 2 with my young sister and she always walked in the wrong direction making the camera paralysed, and making the game hard to play

I once did a playthrough of Mario and Luigi, Bowser's Inside Story where I would only fight the mandatory fights, and never bought any items. It was surprisingly fun and absolutely doable.

I created an custom game recently in Overwatch. You play as Hammond with only his grappling hook and 85% gravity. You have to get to the opposite side of a payload/mixed map without touching the ground for as many times as possible. Optionally you can have two people try to get to the other side and back, but one player plays as Hammond with only his primary fire. He tries to shoot down the other two hammonds who have 150 health.

When I was a kid, I just threw alot of Bob-ombs in MK7 with my cousin against the train on that desert track and try to destroy it! We used shells & co. too.

You just blasted all my nostalgia sensors with Kirby's Air Ride. Everything you described, but also trying to empty the entire garage onto the sky platform, battling with the random power up, or playing chicken on the rails. Some of my best gaming memories came from that one map.

I remember creating a challenge mode for Skyrim once. Ended up calling it the "Stripped Discomfort Zone" basically how it works is you play in the complete opposite style of how you normally play (like an assassin being a juggernaut or an archer being a knight ext.) but the catch was you couldn't wear any armor or clothing, only rings, necklaces, and circlets. (basically anything with no armor value)
