As a Garen otp, I can confirm. Shields and HP are the biggest counters. Just forget armor and stack HP, I swear, the percentage damage on his R doesn't matter if he can't even get you in range for it, Garen has no %Max HP damage outside of it and can't use Blade of the Ruined king.

Full crit garen can shred you though if you don’t stack armor even if you have 4K hp as long as garen wins lane that is and unless I am fighting a ranged top laner as garen I usually win lane by abusing the passive. A lot of people don’t play around garen passive correctly in lane and get punished for it.

U don't need defense if be can't get to you. Jokes aside armor is not going to be effective against him unless it for the early game to minimize damage early. Assuming you have 70 armor and he builds a % armor pen or none your always going to be at -20% - -60% armor.

@@punishing_birb I mean I build full crit garen in regular games when I am ahead and the enemy team isn’t building a full armor tank. It also makes sense since it allows me to murder everyone really fast including the top laner. Also thanks to phantom dancer I get more speed catching up to people than I would with a pure bruiser build to help catch people out who try to kite.

A key note about steraks as a counter, sterak activates at 30% HP, a good garen knows that 30% hp is the threshold to kill any champ in the game with rank 2 R, so a sterak being popped is a signal for garen to ult you after the shield expires.

As a Garen main, I tell you that Garen's weakness is Vision, Displacement and Range. Don't bother using Stuns, Snares/Root and Slows it will bother him little to none due to Slow Cleance Q and a ridiculous 60% Tenacity W. So.. why all 3 weakness? •Vision allows you to prepare entering combat against Garen allowing you to save important Skills/Spells to throw at him when he come barreling down unto your team, despite how ridiculous damaging this Juggernaut is, it does not have a reliable Gap Closing Skill which brings to the next point. •His only option is to, close the Gap is Q with Stridebreaker and a skilled Garen will know how to time W to negate CC's however Displacement Counters him, his ridiculously high Tenacity has no effect on Displacement and with it allows you for the next point. •Maintaining Range/Kiting when his Abilities are not on CD, one of Garen's most dangerous aspect is his ability destroy almost everyone once he got to them really close but with Displacement and Kiting you can beat him easily. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

You should build chain mail against garen. There is nothing more efficient. You reduce every spins damage with it.

Armor isnt that bad against garen. armor is only worse than health because of the base damage of his ult and the 25% e armor shred that only comes after he already dealt decent damage. Also you always want a mix of hp and resistences. So its not bad to build some armor when you already have steraks Randuims omen works against his e when he builds crit i think Zhonjas hourglass Guardian angel

I can help with singed stay with your frist wave so he don't proxy if he decides to ignore frist wave and proxy any way push it fast and go back to him you can ward the start of jungle to see if he go for the second wave as long you have wave after 5 min he can't proxy

it really depends on what is your main go to when against a WW if it is an early monster like Darius then bought anti-heal at 2nd component if it is a late game champion like Kayle then don't go anti heal but rather play really safe and bought boot early if it is a tie matchup like Irelia then go anti-heal at 2nd component or set up a wave and call for jungle if it is a range champion like Vayne then play carefully don't overstep or fast push the wave since you are squishy, make sure to buy wards for the lane's bush so he can't try to deny aa

Against Yorick early game kill any ghouls before his E is of cooldown. E is also a skill shot so it is possible to dodge it if you know he wants to use it.Ghouls give you additional gold and they are his main damage early game. Late game it is mostly map awarness that counters him.

You can also utilize lifesteal and healing to counter his ult, so that he doesn't get you in his lethal range with one combo. As garen, you will have to buy antiheal in form of mortal reminder, which only helps against the healing part, not the hp part. So aatrox with sundered sky can auto just before garen ult and make it deal 0 dmg

The counter to %missing/max hp true dmg is usually trying to counter everything else in their kit. If they can barely do any damage other than the true dmg (via kiting or hp/resistances) you can usually stall long enough to run away or win the fight.

@bajhor7181 uhhhhh unless they changed something recently, im sorry, but that just straight up isn't true. go hop into a practice as Garen or Chogath and use your ultimate on an enemy Malphite and you'll very clearly see the damage is blocked by his passive shield.

@@MrBoingus yeah that's my bad, google quick answer is wrong, normal shields do block true dmg but sterak still makes no sense against garen, the shield scales with hp and so does the ult dmg from garen, the answer to garen depends on the matchup and your spikes, building sterak second on jax for example (which is bad into garen) is just throwing the game

@@bajhor7181steraks is amazing vs garen bro. Urgot and Garen are my main champs. As Garen you hate going vs bruisers that build steraks. It can tank out your entire ultimate. So you have to hold it for a few seconds and those few seconds usually decide the fight. Either you die or need to run away. Usually it's hard to do that because you might be committed if you've dropped enemy so low to the point steraks got proc. Trust me it's really nasty vs Garen.

Depends on your champ, but tahm has miserable waveclear so that's usually how I abuse the matchup. Phase rush and/or merc treads help. I personally play jayce, so I rush eclipse into him. There's nothing he can do if you auto 2x and leave. Save pr if he tries to engage. Just stack minion waves in a slowpush and come back to lane after basing with more gold so he's stuck in lane.

Magic pen and armor pen/Black cleaver also isn’t bad because garen is guaranteed to get bonus resists from his W passive regardless of what he builds. You’ll deal much more damage to him when his W is on cooldown if you build Penetration.

Also, his Q clears all slow effects so use them after he uses Q and his W grants him 60% tenacity for 0.75 seconds so use cc carefully

You can go items like sunfire(high hp and low armor) to counter garen. Garen e reduces ur armor you should build hp but not only hp bc you also need to not get like true dmg from the garen. Also his ult can't half hp you if you build enough hp.

Also, if the enemy top laner pick garen u can actually ''counter pick'' it by locking champs that have big shields, sett is a good pick but if garen take phase rush he will counter you, u can go ignite but isn't that good if garen go with phase rush, if u time correctly u can soak his ultimate damage with w and u can ''cancel'' his silence by using your ultimate when he starts the Q auto animation, take second wind and doran shield is optional, and if u build steraks u have 2 big shields, which is basically impossible to he kills you with him ultimate when u have w and steraks.

I’ve never had trouble with a garen when playing mordekaiser. Morde just wins the all in even when garen has ignited and morde doesn’t, and you can always poke him with q or e to turn off his passive.

Nah, he's broken only when you don't have strong CC, strong damage nullification or strong burst damage in the laning phase. In which that every ADC is lacking it. So some might suggest you to pick Vayne to counter Garen and THAT would be a huge mistake since the top laners are supposed to counter all types of ADC in combat whenever they get close to Garen.

@@Whisperain4 every single aspect of Camille's kit counters Garen in some way, her E long dash for escapes and engages that stuns and gives attack speed, her Q2 being hella true damage that completely bypasses Garen's W damage reduction, along with her Q giving her move speed to kite, and her passive shield not allowing Garen to fully engage

Both already have a lot of HP in their builds. Mordekaiser is especially good into Garen because of his shield that can tank Garen's E, and Gwen is good too because she can chase Garen and slow him with R after his Q + phase rush end.

Even if Garen did become a pdf unfair champ with the addition of stride, he does allow skill expression: W, high movespeed and damage will let him catch you and your team offguard. I'm sad to say that he is not just noobstomper. They really should revert attackspeed changes on E. If you wanted dmg, lethality Garen was there, but even with speed on youmuus he was obviously slower than.. this nightmare.

What attack speed changes? His E attack speed has been this way for many yesrs. Also stridebreaker doesnt make Garen's base move speed faster. He builds other items like PD or DMP etc for that
