What is your ego mean?
Your ego is your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your "self." If you say someone has "a big ego," then you are saying he is too full of himself. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf discuss about solutions for ego.

This is my biggest jihad and i really need Allahs help to get over my ego. I am outspoken and will easily call a spade a spade without fear and often end up speaking out for others and taking the heat. However I am aware that my ego is the major factor here. I shouldnt keep arguing and trying to WIN an argument.

Subhana Allah! I was rude to someone earlier today, even though, I think I had a reason for it (or so my Nafs was/is telling me); however, now that I listened to this clip, I am sure that I need to apologize to the person or make du’a for him, or both. This has a context. We should defend ourselves when very necessary and we're not 'boosting our ego'. This is praiseworthy as there are times when it poses no harm or difficulty if we do not and we do not need to defend ourselves.

there are in islam 3 basic course of action. haram not allowed halal = allowed halal good = a better allowed course of action i believe this may be a situation where defending yourself whilst allowed, wasn't the better of the two. Turning the other cheek was the better of the course of action for AbuBakr. and the prophet pbuh was teaching him that. knowing the difference between which course of action is which, requires wisdom of a lifetime i suspect.

there are tons of books starting with Imam Al-Ghazali's 'Ihyaa Uloom AD-deen' and an abridgement 'The Alchemy of Happiness'. Sheikh Hamza Yusuf has translated a poetic summary of the 'Ihyaa' as 'Purification of the Soul' and the latter as a full book. Both are available in English (PDF or Hardcopy).

i think those verses are referring to the lesser jihad of fighting physically..but shaykh hamzah is talking about the greater jihad against your ego where you do not have to defend yourself against slander

Having the permission doesn’t mean it’s the best thing to do. forgiving is always better than defending yourself You can either defend yourself either let the angels defend you

this is about verbal slander. if someone is swearing at you, it is better to not engage them in the childish playground behaviour. As 1 it means you haven't conquered your nafs. And 2 there is no benifit in a mudslinging fight.

There are too many opinions based on some scholars and little proofs of them form primary sources.

that is because they are sufficient in conveying the comprehensive understanding of the primary sources. Giving talks to the general public in limited time entails more of conveying understandings they can use/act upon rather than copious quotations which can be taken out of context as the primary sources are not things that the layman can directly interprete.
