yup, you win. best crackle out of all youtube tutorials. the others are using air guns, i guess a heat gun is the way to the fattest patches.

Compressed air would probably work in warmer weather. The guitar is done tho. I can make a video. But the trick to big patches is alot of crackle paint layers. I think they dudes running guns are dialing the mix in a certain way. But hey, cans CAN work....😂

I got this on a Stuka model airplane one time, I wanted a winter camo paint job. I Sprayed it heavy with a flat white enamel then before it completely dried I hit again heavy with a blue lacquer.

pretty cool outcome. interesting tip on engine enamel paint....and the paint and then two new coats of color 10-15 minutes apart jsut before crackle is in line....I guess spraying crackle on when it's kind of wet makes the cracks larger.

Looks amazing. I think engine enamel paint is the way to go. I've started using it and it's really good in reacting with the crackle. Also, your 10min drying time is great advice. No idea why it says 45 on the Montana tins.
@micahwatz1148
@micahwatz1148 4 ай бұрын
45 mins and normal enamel paint would probably work also. I think the main thing is getting enough coats of crackle on so it can form bigger black patches

@@micahwatz1148 do you think the thickness of the colour coat matters? I did a great headstock on a Jackson and got the base colour coat really crazy thick and then really thick crackle and it worked amazing.

@micahwatz1148
@micahwatz1148 4 ай бұрын
@@lenduckworth99 well id go at least two or three. You want the paint to basically be thick enough to have a thin "shell" start forming on the surface, then it wet underneath. So once the crackle hits it, it will split the shell surface and the wet surface underneath will allow the crackle patches to separate more. Lol. Man ive learned so much about painting since i started this crackle stuff lol

As someone said - best looking crackle finish. Very agressive looking crackles! I am painting my guitar (I heard crackles are not working with silver/metalic paints underneath). Do you think I can do 1 base silver layer than wait over night, than do 2 layers of transparent spray, than put crackle paint on top? I hope crackle paint will react with transparent coat and will see silver finish underneath. Thanks

Get the spray max 2 k clear coat, after the crackle paint drys for a few days or a week. Spray on the spraymax 2k. Like four coats, then a day or two later, hit it with a scotch brite pad to scuff it up, then spray another four coats, let that dry for a few days. Then hit it with 220 to level the surface. Then from there you spray it with four coats again, the wet sand out the orange peel and get it glossy by going through the grits wetsanding, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, then buff with meguiars compound, and then polish. They have buffing sponges for hand drills on amazon. It takes waaay more clear coat when doing crackle paint jobs vs regular. Because you have to build up so many layers to fill in the cracks.

@@Vtertdfgwrth5ybdfasgagadfg you could do it with one can. But yeah a back up can wouldnt be a bad idea. Its just filling in those cracks. It takes more to not burn through. There's an entire other factor in the equation with crackle

I scrapped of all the laquer from my guitar and Im going to crackle it. After spraying with montana, are you sanding it before spraying 2K clear coat? Is clear coat sticking really well? Is it sticking well especially to the glossy red finish? I did a test with silver paint, It cracked but rather small (I put alot of paint) and silver paint peeled off, have you ever experienced that? (maybe surface was oily or something). Thanks

@@snalewajski6173 ok so first off, make sure you use ALOT of crackle paint. Like 5 coats. Like more than you think you should be spraying. Second, no i do not sand the crackle, i spray the crackle, let it dry for a good few days, then spray clear over it, 4 coats, let dry a day or two, scuff it with a scotch brite pad, spray 4 more coats, let that dry, then level sand with 220. Then spray 4 more coats of clear. Then wet sand 600,800,1000,1500,2000,2500,3000. Then use meguiars compound with a medium buffing pad on a hand drill, then polish with a fine pad on a hand drill.
