Thank you for addressing what happens if the dog is getting worked up. Even if he watches the video with me, he never seems to do exactly what the dog in the video did ;)

Wonder what you are doing with the puppy to keep them safe before they are willing to go in the crate happily. First few nights home? Are they in the gated area? Are they kept in a different area where they might develop a negative association with being left alone and then transferred to new area? It appears that you place them in a crate by your bed at night while you sleep. What if they cry in there? Decide they don't like to be in the crate? How do I keep the puppy safe when I can't watch them 100%.

Hi Robin, Great question. What I normally do is create a set up where the puppy can do no harm (chew on things, have accidents) and are offered the choice to sleep inside an open door crate. 1 - Place an open door crate next to your bed. Place a soft blanket in or near the crate (puppies are likely to chew on blankets so make sure you are giving the puppy something that you don't mind getting chewed on a bit). 2 - Puppy proof. Remove anything from the floor that could get damaged. If that is not possible you can also attach a harness to your puppy and keep him/her tethered close to your bed with blanket/ crate accessible. 3 - Give your puppy a special chewy or stuffed KONG to help settle the puppy. The goal here is to create a situation where the puppy can choose the crate as a resting space, while minimizing the stess/ anxiety/ frustration of being prematurely confined or separated from you in another area of your home. It's important to do a lot of proactive training. This is usually 5-10 minutes of training 1-2x's/day. During this time I would be systematically building duration, distraction and distance. The next step is having them sleep in the crate at times where they are predictably tired (like at night, or after you've done training + a walk or "watch the world" session). By doing these things dogs are going to associate the crate with rest and relaxation and offer calm behavior inside the crate. If your dog is going to the crate and barking - this could be a sign that the dog needs more proactive training sessions vs. only reinforcing desirable behavior when it occurs on its own or when the dog is being redirected from undesirable behavior. In this case dogs can easily learn that it's the "squeaky wheel that gets the oil." It's best if training is a natural and predictable part of your routine. Hope this is helpful. - Alyssa Rose www.legendsdogtraining.com
