How to create a BioActive desert terrarium for an Ackies Monitor

Hey guys! Great to be uploading more videos and building more tanks. This is my Tetra Fauna 75 gallon deluxe that will house my trio of Rare Earth red Ackies Monitors. This will be an excellent growout terrarium for the first year or two - then they will be moved into a custom terrarium that allows for a 24" substrate lip.
This terrarium features the Terra Sahara, and I was looking to really replicate their shrubland, Australian environment as much as possible.

When your from Australia and the "Ackies" or Ridge Tail Monitor last time i checked lived where there is no source of any substrate like that . Most to all live in Red sand or Red dirt one side only needs to be cool not damp or wet so no need for Spag moss or a cactus is very rare to find near them aslo so no need Josh rethink this setup
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter 6 жыл бұрын
They just bred this morning by the way, so they are doing great! Just because the substrate isn't red does not mean it does not function or act as the same type of substrate. You can add whatever plants you want, just because the plants are not from that area does not mean its bad for the lizards.

I have one full grown male ackie in a 4.5 foot by 2.5 viv and he covers every inch of it every day without fail so if your keeping a trio together for life your gunna need at least a 6ft by 4ft viv. They also need a surface temperature between 140-150 on the basking spot otherwise they can't digest their food properly. Rocks are a basking must for monitors.

Hi Madison Whitten. I leave them in there. the leaves are important for the cycle of your biome. The bugs and microfauna will break down the leaves to add macronutrients to your soil. I recommend topping off your biodegradable layer when it gets low. I usually average every 3 months or so depending on how much I add upon set up.

Genuinely not sure how this is a desert terrarium. Nothing about this in any way resembles any sort of desert environment. I'm more about conditions than appearance so I don't really think much of it if an enclosure doesn't *look* natural if it has everything the animals need but this is like a straight up temperate forest floor with the heat cranked up.

Its a really versatile system. That is kinda the beauty of it. Minor adjustments to humidity and temperature can support a wide variety of species. Having said that, the Terra Firma soil is the temperate soil. Terra Sahara i would imagine, does probably bleed off humidity through evaporation better than the Firma.

i like the repti sun and other similar bulbs but absolutely not with any aquarium style tank those bulbs put out a LOT of uvb too much so they need to be further away from your animals further away than pretty much any aquarium still tank allows a normal hot sunny day in the US is roughly 150 uvb those bulbs are well over double that at 12” from the bulb with most of those style bulbs. if you use them watch your animals if they hide too much that’s probably why

troopershollar 79 I’d imagine there’s an online store you could possibly get one shipped. You may want to look into building your own. There’s a way to make a fish tank out of plywood. I mean, it’s obviously got glass in the front for viewing, I’m thinking of going that route. Cheaper and you can build bigger than you could buy for the same price. Plus it’s super customizable, you could do multiple glass sides for different viewing angles. There’s a KZfaqr who’s got a series of videos showing him build one for fish. His channel is “the king of diy” look him up if you don’t know who he is already. 👍🏻 best of luck.

I know I'm really late but your not really supposed to use sand with captive reptiles as it can harm them if ingested

SmashingTaco that's not true for all reptiles. For ackies it's best to have a deep clay/sand/soil mix for them to dig in

The moss is almost always consistently dry with little moisture. The ambient humidity is under 20$% with exception of a humid hide which I provide and they utilize. Even why dry the AAA Spag becomes a great microbial hotspot. Even if you use moss dry you still tons of benefits, which is why it is used in the first place.

SmashingTaco While it’s true that there is some level of risk involved with feeding animals on sand/loose substrate, it would be inaccurate to say that those substrate choices are inherently bad. The risk of impaction is much lower for healthy animals, and even still there are animals that thrive on sand (banded geckos and sand boas, for example). It’s also important to remember that these reptiles and amphibians we keep have wild counterparts (most of em anyway), so an animal that lives in sandy environments in the wild will be able to handle them in captivity. Of course, you should still exercise some caution and there are ways you can lower the risk even further. Like, don’t let a wet prey item that’s caked in dirt/sand be eaten if you can help it, because that’s just silly. When using sand, opt for something like washed play sand instead of something from the pet store, as it’ll be easier for the animal to pass if it ingests some here and there. Avoid products like “calci-sand”, because lizards can “develop a taste” for it, especially lizards like bearded dragons that feel the need to lick everything in sight (An animal getting substrate in its mouth on occasion is hardly the same as an animal going out of its way to consume the sand.). Keep your animals water bowl clean of debris if it uses one (which you should do anyway!). And also, it never hurts to hand/tong feed, feed your animal in a separate enclosure, or feed your animal using a bowl. All of that being said though, the safest option is obviously avoiding those risks, no matter how minimal they can be. But it’s also true that you can provide your animal with a more naturalistic home so long as you use common sense and insure your animal is nice and healthy. In the end it’s a matter of preference. And in case you were wondering, I’ve used both minimalistic and naturalistic setups.. and in the case of loose substrates, I’ve never once had an issue with impaction in the 19 years I’ve actively kept herps.

How are you keeping three monitors in one tank? I've never seen cohabitation past 2 lizards of the same species. They won't kill eachother or fight for territory?
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Thetacticalnightmare. They are still juveniles, and there are a lot of different hiding places as well as multiple basking areas. Monitors aren't as aggressive towards each other like other lizards. Komodo dragons have been known to hunt in packs. Wild Argus monitors will control a territory with their clutch mates. I haven't had any issues with fighting or aggression. Rest assured, if there is ever an issue they will be separated.

It's just Ackie monitor, you know that right? The name Ackie refers to their scientific name ,Varanus acanthurus. The name Ackie's monitor would imply that the animal is named after a person, which is not the case.

Pat Eastman For ONE ADULT Ackie monitor I have been told by SEVERAL people including breeders that a 36 long 24 deep 19 high is good for 1 Ackie. Ofcourse I would love to have a bigger enclosure but that is the largest size I can fit.

Hi, I watch your videos regularly and I don't understand why you bother so much. why don't you remove the front windows or the top of your terrarium, to make it easier for you instead of putting all that earth on the ground? ;-)

Ok i have sub and been watching most of the videos,i do like what u do! Butttttt.... i feel u put so much stuff into the tanks that the animals dont even fit! Like its so nice to add the wood but just for the back area! Give them a lil room in the front to walk and drink there water without having to be on a wood bent down to drink water! They can drown (yes is More nature) but give them a lil room in the front to walk

Its not a desert terrarium with that substrate you used. Bio active and desert are largely contradictary. Its too hot in the desert for living organisms in the first few inches of sand.
