How to create a curved speaker mesh in Solidworks

This video covers my exploration of creating a curved mesh. Instead of creating a flat mesh and then deforming that, I created a tool to control the wires, then deformed the tool, then finally swept the wires. This way the section of the wire remains circular. The final result is not as smooth as I'd like - this can probably be improved by controlling the deform tool with more curves, however I have noticed adding more curves can result in a poorer result. Anyway, this is more than adequate for renderings etc...

The deform and twist tools in solidworks are very underrated in daily workflows because of the computation time they need. But examples like this, really show the potential use of the tools. This is a very unique video!

I agree Ali, the deform tool is proving to be quite robust. I just need to spend more time using it to figure out which curve topologies work best!

@@AndrewJacksonDesignStudio Maybe instead of sweeping from sides, it can be created as a trianglare surface from one side and the other from the split line.

Oof that’s heavy Andrew! In your experience, If it is only for rendering and visualisation purposes, is it better to build this in a polygon modeller like blender?

Yeah Tony, quite heavy! I have created a mesh in Lightwave before, sub d flat, then deformed it, which was fine for rendering. Doing it the way I have in SW means the wires don’t get squashed in section but does it really matter... probably not! Still, another exploration that might be useful in other ways. Now if SW had flow along surface like Rhino...

@@AndrewJacksonDesignStudio I see. Of course, this is wonderful exploration of solidworks. Never used lightwave before. Anything special about it? Also, will you ever do tutorials on rhino? I guess there are plenty of resources already out there but still/

I’ve been using lightwave since 97/98, bit long in the tooth now😀 I mainly use it for product stills so don’t really need the latest effects/volume stuff. It does support octane render and HDR light studio, both of which I cannot work without now. I could put together a few rhino vids but you’re right, there’s lots out there and some are extremely good (The Better Living Through CNC ones)
