I have multiple questions: I’m a beginner but... I understand soap making a little bit. I am stuck with... trying to figure out what’s my water / lye ratio or any of the other two options that have to be selected. I am making 56 oz of soap. And I made it using 5.54oz of lye and 12.29 oz of water. I don’t know how to use these numbers to plug them into soap calc.
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 3 жыл бұрын
@@flexxiirodsz2549 if you opting to use water:lye ratio, the lowest ratio you can do is 1:1 that is one part water mixes with one part lye. Any lower than that your soap will be lye heavy. Try using Water:lye 1.25:1. That is for every 1 part lye you have 1.25 water. This ensures that all your lye wi be through dissolved. Or just use percentages, for cold process 25-33% water and hot process 30-38%

My scale only reads 1 digit after the decimal point. Can I round off the calculated measurements or I need a different calculator? In your video the calculated weight is 5.88 for olive oil but my scale will only read 5.8 or 5.9 .....Can I use 5.9 or I'll have to get a scale that reads 5.88?

Yes you can round off oils but when it comes to measuring required sodium hydroxide/lye it's best to be as accurate as possible

Hi if I don’t want to use castor oil and only use coconut oil olive oil and palm oil what percentage would u recommend for each to total 100%
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 3 жыл бұрын
You can play around with the percentages on Soapcalc to try and get your preferred soap quality. Personally I’d do Palm Oil 68% Olive oil 18% and Coconut oil 12% that’s because I like to keep my cleansing value at 10 or below because of dry skin. Or you can try 30 Coconut, 30 Olive, 40 Palm oil and increase the superfat to 10% to reduce the drying effect of Coconut oil.

Thanks, but what if I want to add other powdered additives like soda ash, kaolin etc.. how do I go about it
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 5 ай бұрын
You add 1 teaspoon of the additive per 1 pound oil. For example if you have 5 pounds of oil, you'll add 5 teaspoons of kaolin.

Once I get my base recipe how would I go about adding and measuring additives such as honey, oats, cinnamon etc? Ty
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 3 жыл бұрын
Usually additives are 1 tablespoon per pound oils. For example if my soap's total oil weight is 2lbs I'll add 2 tablespoons of oats or honey. I personally have never used cinnamon but from research too much of it can actually burn the skin so just look out for it
@SecuritySavvyChick
@SecuritySavvyChick 3 жыл бұрын

How do you determine the percentage of the oils you are using in your recipe?
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 3 жыл бұрын
Heyy Nancy! Once you know the total amount of oils needed it's really up to you to determine the percentages of oils. It's really a matter of the type of soap you prefer e.g moisturizing, cleansing, creamy etc. However some oils can affect your soap like too much Castor oil can lead to a slimy soap. There's a link in the description box that you can use to check out recommended oil % by Nature's Garden but personally I've gone over or under the recommendations and had good results.

Amount of Water and amount of lye, that is the recipe (calculations) on how to make your lye mixture right? That is what’s confusing me about the soap calc
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Soapcalc determines the amount of water and lye needed in a recipe. Water + lye = lye solution/mixture The lye is calculated based on your oils, it would take hours to calculate it manually because each oil has a different SAP value. Too complicated lol! Hope that answers the question

By "Water Concentration" do you mean Lye Concentration? Or are you actually using 33% water and 67% lye? That doesn't make sense.
@humblednature9593
@humblednature9593 2 жыл бұрын
True it wouldn't make sense. Calculating water as percentage of oils is not the same as lye concentration. If water is 33% of oils it will equal to 29.3 lye concentration
