Don't forget these are considered confined spaces and air/oxygen (or the lack there of) needs to be addressed to avoid suffocation, especially should someone accidentally seal the lid w/someone inside. Stay safe!

Check the specs before buying. Most can not be left in the ground without the tank being less than 25% full of water, otherwise they will collapse. If you plan on using it as an inexpensive mini bunker, do not get the ones with the piers or baffles, they take up too much space. Make sure to get one with two hatches. The largest that I could find will allow a person my size (5'2") to stand upright along the center line only. So the general procedure is to dig the hole , then put anchors about 4 feet lower than where the bottom of the tank will be. The hole needs to be deep enough for the top of the tank to be 4 feet underground (for fall out protection). Attach stainless steel cables to the anchors. Smooth out the bottom of the hole, and put the tank in. Put in the stub outs for ventilation and what ever else you will need (such as solar, cables for security cameras, coax for radio and so forth). Wrap the cables around the tank tightly. Cap off the stub outs. Put the extensions on such that the hatches will be slightly above grade level. Fill the tank with water, and let it sit to check for leaks around the stub outs. Put the hatches on tightly. Build forms around the tank, and cover the tank with concrete. Once the concrete is cured, pump the water out, and dry the inside of the tank. If you are careful about how you dig the hole, forms are not necessary. You should place 8-12 inches of concrete around the sides and over the top. The point of the anchors and filling the tank with water is to prevent it from floating when the concrete is placed. If it does, you are totally and completely screwed. The point of the concrete is to keep the tank from collapsing since it will be empty, and was not designed to be underground without being at least 25% full of water (or sewage). The end result will be a water, rodent, and creepy - crawler proof space to hide. You must have ventilation. You will not last a day without it. This is totally a DIY project, so that nobody will know it is there. Most people can do this without getting any help from a contractor. Tell the nosy neighbors the truth, you are installing a water cistern. Of course, leave out the part that you will not be using it to store water. If you do not mind getting a contractor involved, there is a better materiel. It is steel reinforced poly pro. It is used in commercial applications for culverts, rain cisterns, and water management. It can be buried 25 feet deep. An 8 foot diameter 15 foot long tank with two man holes runs about 15k. No need to cover with concrete. However, most people would not be able to place this without lots of help. Which means people would know, and of course, this is much more expensive.

For those wondering how to pull this off, you will need a large tent and a lot of motivation. Set the tent up, cut out the bottom and start digging. This is a great way to cache food and weapons without anyone seeing.

done it except with 2000 gallon ones and precast concrete one. use the drains for air flow plastic can be cut re wielded and sealed up 50 year snow coat on the concrete ones. build as you go...pay in cash no traces and if you do this in national forests have a magnetic sign made up and put on your truck tell fish and game you are doing erosion control or mine drainage mitigation.... have a stack of confusing looking paper work and there you go... and they where called Habitrails

Also it's melt point is way above 100C, also it's tough as anything and 5 mmm thick and amazingly shockproof, no sledge hammer can damage it easily, also your bullets and bombs comment, wut? If it's buried how is a bullet going to do anything, but of course if someone drops a JDAM on you it won't be pretty.

It looks like a good shelter to have near the house. If your main bunker is too remote for you to get to it in a reasonable amount of time this could be a good secondary shelter to at least shield you from the blast.

I have read that these can collapse from the weight of the dirt , the manufactures instructions state the water pressure is essential to the structure integrity just wondering if any one else has previous experience with regard to the poly septic tanks ,but I think its a great idea ;-)

Yes this option will not work unless you build a sturdy underground cave with concrete cinder blocks, sand bags etc and then put the plastic septic tank inside.

Yeah if it's about 20' long by 6 feet high with 2 exits. Anything smaller that that and there's not enough Valium in the world to keep me in there calm and collected. I get claustrophobic just thinking about it. A 53' steel shipping container surrounded 2 or 3 feet thick concrete Might be livable for short duration of a few days. One good dump would have me gagging for fresh air.

no one responding realized you were talkign about owning your own freeze-dryer, hilarious. You are correct though. You can drop 2k on a pretty decent freeze dryer, and then if you spend 2K on foods to freeze dry, you would likely have more that the 4K someone would spend on freeze dried food alone. Plus, you would still have a freeze dryer.

@@cerebral3591 I believe there is now a company trying to shop a "home style" freeze drying unit, that starts at like $2500 USD. If you watch Ebay, however, you can find used ones that are being sold off when a lab upgrades. Even if it's fifteen years old, as long as it holds pressure, it pumps, and it fully desiccates the food, then it is worth it. I've seen used lab units go for under 2K Canning is still cheaper, for semi-freshish foods that you don't want to be crunchy, but if you want to make some scrambled eggs last for a decade, freeze drying is the way to go.

I would recommend ballast if you're going to try this... ballast is weight added to a submerged vessel, which a buried tank is one... ballast can be achieved internally (think of pouring 6" of concrete inside the bottom of the tank) and/or externally (metal cabling or straps run around the outside of the tank and through concrete at the bottom on the sides of the tank) I have helped with storm shelter installations and these were the ways we kept them in the ground... I hope this helps

Would it be safe to pour concrete all over the outside of the tank in the hole that is dug that is just slightly bigger than the tank? Like encasing it in concrete? I'm in the process of installing the white underground water holding tank as a cache and need advice. I've learned the white ones have no outside end holes and are all sealed except for the manhole (which is great for what I'm using it for)

Yes you can just use plenty of re bar and concrete with fiber. Generally standard tanks are 3 inches thick. Heavy duty tanks are 4 to 6 thick.

Keep out of flood plains. Have a co2 detector if you plan on sleeping, running out of air is no good. Great idea if safety is put at the front of the adventure. Might avoid going heavy on the beans.

Ron, you didn't mention the weight of these items. So as to know if they be picked up and hauled with a pickup truck or they need a trailer. Or what to do when you get them on location due to the weight factor. In other words do you need a tractor/skidsteer or 4 healthy guys to place them onsite....stuff like that. Thx MJ

The non low profile 1500 gallon tanks are tall enough for you to sit and lay out but if you will use it as a bunker set it down in a cinder block housing so it dose not get pushed out and you have more protection form fallout and other things makes it stronger and 100% compact the dirt around it.

Its cramped to say the least. Theres roughly 46 inches from floor to ceiling inside on the bigger tanks. The smaller tanks between 36 and 40 inches.

Good informational video. If your seasonal water table is high, a tank without proper weight or anchors will float. We had installed a 1,500 gallon septic tank weighing 12,000 pounds, backfilled it, got heavy rain and it floated. We have replaced many cheap plastic and fiberglass tanks that collapsed or cracked. On some of these tanks, you were required to fill them with water while backfilling them to keep them from collapsing. Before you buy a tank know how many feet of dirt cover it is rated at. Read the manufacturer's installation instructions. Some tanks require specific material that can be used for backfill. There were some tanks made that the bolted cover was structural, after it was backfilled and you removed the cover, the tank collapses. If you call a concrete septic tank manufacturer you can get a 1,500 gallon concrete tank delivered and set in your hole for about $1,300, the tank does not have any piers in it. If you want a real tank, I have some good steel tanks from 6,000 to 12,000 gallon capacity. On one tank the walls are about 1/2" thick!

I had one of the 1250 septic's installed as, well a septic tank. The piers are for cement to keep the tank from floating. According to the septic company. They dug a hole under each pier opening filled them with concrete and a tie down. Let that setup then added a rebar with a hooked end to the tie downs and filled them with concrete. They never said much about a car driving over them but I just figured it's not a good idea to drive a vehicle over a septic tank anyway.

You have to be very careful about these things floating out of the ground when they are empty. I buried one (1000 gal, concrete) for my septic system. It rained that night and popped it out of the ground.

I suspect if you planned to stay in the septic tank, the 4" vent could be attached to ventilation fan for air flow. Could we get a demonstration of how this could be used as a short term 2-person poor man's fallout shelter?

@@billsmith981 So it depends on what you can afford for a shelter. A large shelter like what is sold by Atlas Survival Shelters, if you can afford it is probably one of the best options (unless you have a lot more money)... However, many folks are limited in funds and space. A fallout shelter needs to protect the inhabitants from fallout. Now for radiation protection there are three factors: time distance, and shielding. With fallout, distance is not an option... But if you can get mass (say 3 feet of dirt, or more) you have shielding. If you can inhabit the site without leaving during peak fallout (minimum 72-hours, preferably 2-weeks) you have time. A low cost simple shelter that meets these requirements would greatly improve a person's chance of survival. A septic tank, though cramp might work. I really kinda want to try an experiment... But my yard does not have a place to add a shelter...

@@davebrunero5529 for Radiation protection you also need to filter the Air and decontaminate the particulate matter from your body and clothing. ...but the need to protect yourself from radiation is very unlikely....better to prepare for more mundane possibilities.

@@billsmith981 most shelters are hardened against NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical - note officially the term is now CBRN with the addition of Radiological (dirty bombs)). Biological filtration requires extremely fine particulate filters. These are somewhat specialized. Depending on the type of biological contaminant you are preparing against, might not be something you can find at the local hardware store. Chemical is generally not a major concern in almost any scenario. For air filtration you need an absorbent filter (i.e. activated charcoal). Again, this is somewhat specialized. Due to the vaporizer nature, just having a fine mesh does not help. Fallout is simple, it is dust... And can be effectively filtered by having a pipe sticking out of the ground with a turn aimed down (a little more complex than this, but not much). As for decontamination of a person, biological and chemical require different processes when entering a minimalist shelter. But for fallout (if possible try to get in the shelter before the fallout comes, you have roughly 30-minutes)... Take off and bag your contaminanted clothes when you enter, then move the bags to the entrance. Next rinse hair if contaminanted and wipe off your body with a damp towel. This should drastically reduce your exposure. As for other "mundane" possibilities (assuming civil unrest), I believe this set could easily work for a few days or weeks if needed... Given you can stretch your legs.

@Freddy McIntire the question is what are you expecting. If you are looking for a filter against viruses, they can be very small (the flu virus is around 100nm, 0.1um). Bacteria are larger, >1um. If you thinking aerosol biological weapons, even larger... However, biological is dependent on being exposed to enough to get you sick. One flu virus will probably not get you sick, but a sneeze droplet with 100,000 might do the job... So, a 0.03um filter should work against most risk (are you living in a clean room? Only place I've seen filters like that). However, filters that work against almost every conceivable threat tend to be really expensive. So by extremely small, the question is what is feasible. Gas mask filters (NBC/CBRN) are 99.97% effective against 0.3um particles (and 99.9999% for the 1-10um particle range). The activated charcoal is somewhat broader in use as it provides a large surface area to capture the contaminant and has a pore size in the range of a few nm (0.002um). As a result, assuming it is packed properly forcing the air to pass through it and not around, it is simply awesome as a filtering material. Activated alumina from my knowledge is generally not as good as activated charcoal for air filters (honestly I don't think I've ever seen it used in one).

I was thinking to downsize. My 5 kids are gone, and I only need a tiny house (on wheels). They don't come with basements, and I like the idea of those plastic water or septic tanks underground as a basement substitute. It's always good to have a tornado shelter with some supplies.

No man is an island. These guys don't care about at least half the country, and hate the government and want it to collapse. They won't last long on their fancy freeze dried food (affiliate link in the description! LOL! Suckers!) if society does collapse, which many are hoping will happen. A much better disaster prep plan is to try to ensure that society does NOT collapse. Stop poisoning the air/land/water, move towards a sustainable energy economy, eat non-poisoned foods, stop listening to what I'm sure is Russian propaganda "Qanon" conspiracy theories, and get rid of the wink-wink-nudge-nudge nazis around them. Much better odds of survival than hiding out in your plastic septic tanks.

Who knows what sort of survival scenario awaits? A global apocalypse or perhaps just regional unrest? Perhaps a survival situation looks more like a month or two of lawlessness rather than a meteor strike or global thermonuclear war. Inferior stock is culled in times of global crisis. It is instinctual to want to survive just as it is instinctual to pass your genes on to future generations. Some folks lack those instincts and self cull. Even in modern times when people like to believe that they are so evolved, the laws of evolution are still at play. We are all just a week or two away from killing or being killed. That is the human reality.

Okay serious question, I have a line on a 10K gallon Rotoplas underground storage tank. Dimensions are 12ft diameter by 14ft long/tall, any opinion on weather or not it would be a good idea to bury it horizontally? Easier to build flooring, and storage into it for use as a shelter. I'm just not 100% on it being safe/crush proof even with it being buried 24in deep. Thanks for your time, Good Video!

It does bear some resemblance of Loggins, but it is of Jesus. It is a piece painted by Akiane Kramarik called the "Prince of Peace". She was 8 years old when she completed it, from a vision she had. This painting gained even more popularity from the book "Heaven is for Real", which was later made into a movie about a boy named Colton Burpo. This "young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven".

Yha man that's just a septic tank. Won't stop nothing and will trap up if not kill you. All they'd have to do is drill a hold and fill it up and you never see light again. Get a hidden plot of land and burry a truck container, excape hatch and put a mobile home over it. Make it old and abandoned looking. Have a trap door dn to it that can be locked. Make that entrance colapsable as to cover the true entrance. They will enter find nothing and hopefully leave. If not you have your other hatch to sneek in and out off.

@@josefstalin4532 the point being is: it's false advertisement. Selling something as a BUNKER. Leads many to believe that it is one. When in fact the company that's selling them as such are misleading people that are none the wiser into a purchase of what they would believe would protect them. While you are right it could be kept water tight and keep your cache dry. I know to stay on the move is my best option and to use something like that for just a dry cache. Then again why drop 700. When for less then 100. You can have several dry caches out of 55 gal plastic drums or a bunch of capped off pvc pipes burried. The people trying to pass the SEPTIC tank off as a bunker. Would have been better off saying what it really is and suggesting it as a good idea for a dry cache as apposed to being deceitful and giving false hope to those who could otherwise spend their limited funds on something far better for their money! I spent 14 yrs a soldier cause I love my country and rather loose a dollar to each and everyone of them , rather then make 100. From each one of them by disception!

Yo Ron, I love the channel and what you do. Have you ever considered putting somebody (or multiple people) in one of your bunkers underground for a month (or whatever you consider the max time you'd need in a disaster) and documenting it? Maybe the person inside could do a daily video diary or something. I think it'd be a) educational for people b) very entertaining and c) great exposure for your channel and business as I suspect even people who don't search for bunkers online would be interested in seeing that. Best thing is, if it doesn't go well and the person decides to come out early, you can always just delete the videos and pretend it never happened!

silent knight that would probably be it , conditions where it is placed are all things to consider . And if you just were to place this in the ground and place the minimum amount of dirt with no risers I can tell you with 100% certainty they will rise out of the ground . Think of it as a giant bouey . It will float . One nice thing about the plastic tanks , they can last more then a lifetime because they see no sunlight once installed . I think if people want a “ cheap “ bunker go with a concrete tank and do what you need to do to make it water resistant .

You do, of course, need to install an air exchange system if you're actually planning to get into one of these things. Even a hand-cranked system will suffice if it's for very short term. You also need to disguise the entrance in some way while still being able to find it.

Being round. Anything with an arched shape on top is very strong once buried. The problem with shipping containers is they are flat on top.

Shipping containers aren't designed to be buried. They are designed to be stacked. So when you bury then the force of the dirt against the sides compromises them. These septic tanks and water tanks are designed to be buried.
