I must tell you, you can also use colored pencils OVER oil Pastels. Well, depending on the brands, you can get really good effects! I find Prismacolor Pencils work very well with most oil pastels, especially since they both have Beeswax as one of their ingredients. You can even blend the colors with your fingers, cotton swabs or other blending tools. By the way, you Really Know your Light! ( I mean, I'm sure it's hard to truly experience your art via video because there are just some qualities that the camera doesn't get.) You complete these lessons with practiced ease and you provide perfect examples! I like how you achieve your effects but I also like just how much fun you're having doing artwork! MY hat's off to you! See, I'm showing you my bald spot. Forget I said that.

It's so funny, I was doing a picture last night and originally trying to clean my brush and then by accident used it on my page. Just shows how accidents can make a difference. I love my oil pastels now. I have the Paul Ruben set. I also used them like you used gelatos and by cleaning the brush using solvent on a piece of kitchen roll they work like the gelatos and don't need as much solvent as with a paint brush.

I use heavy cardstock for 99% of my sketching and colored pencil artwork. I just don't like toothy paper, since I have a heavy hand. I have been using Hippie Crafter chalk pastels by shaving them onto a paper plate and then spreading the color onto my background with cotton pads. It's fine for lighter colors, but I wanted something more vibrant. THIS is exactly what I needed, because I have oil pastels that I've never used before. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

@ Art by Karen Valentine I’m watching the video, took out the oil pastels and Gamsol, tried on a scrap of Strathmore tone tan paper and nope, not as opaque as yours, they turned kind of a gel like consistency, and I can still see the tan paper below, it must be that they’re a student grade and I’m really bad at backgrounds 🙈 BTW, don’t the pins on the page show up afterwards? Oh I just saw that these are magnetic, so your board below is metal?

Sherry I’m so sorry I missed this comment! No problems with rubbing. Thankfully the oil pastels move pretty easily on my paper. If you don’t want to do all the rubbing just paint them on with a larger brush and OMS. That’s what I did in the latest video I have up. Much easier and faster.

Hi Karen! First, this is absolutely remarkably stunning!! I have the Paul Ruben oil pastels, so I assume an oil pastel is like any other oil pastel. You always bring us new techniques for our backgrounds along with your portraits and other artwork. I don’t think my finger is strong enough to push the pastel around the page but with your genius idea of using mineral spirits to blend it, I can do that! Since the oil pastel doesn’t really dry, I guess I can’t add the background first, right? With your magnets, what’s the base of your table and could you use small pieces of wax paper under the magnets so they don’t leave a mark? So sorry for rambling, I’m just excited lol. Thank you so much for this amazing video!
@ArtbyKarenValentine
@ArtbyKarenValentine 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Keni! Yes, any oil pastel should work. I actually will be posting a video in a week or so where I am doing exactly as you mentioned. Using a paint brush and OMS I literally paint the oil pastel on. The wonderful thing about it is that there is no oily residue. So you can absolutely use than method first with no problem! I think it’s going to as much a favorite as the gelatos are. Maybe even more because you can achieve a more opaque background which on tan paper is very desirable!

Hello Karen: I enjoyed your tutorial on using oil pastels for background. I have a question, I bought pastel gelatos, and I have vegetable glycerin I would like to use instead of mineral spirits. So my question is: would this be okay to use with pastel gelatos, or would I need to use anything at all to get the same effect? Also would I have to use a fixative since it’s gelatos and not oil? Thank you 🙏🏽 again for an informative and helpful video. 💞💞💞🙏🏽🙏🏽🥰👍👍
@ArtbyKarenValentine
@ArtbyKarenValentine 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tommie! Gelatos are water based so you could use water if you want to spread them around. However I use them “dry” with a short bristle stencil brush and get a beautiful smoothly blended background that way. No fixative is needed with Gelatos. I have a video where I demonstrate using the gelatos. If you would like a link, let me know. 😊

I know they’re a different medium but how do you compare these with the gelatos?
@ArtbyKarenValentine
@ArtbyKarenValentine 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response Anna. There are two major differences that I have found. The oil pastels are more opaque than gelatos. This is very nice when using tan cardstock because the oil pastels completely cover the color of the paper. The other is that because they are oil I can use OMS and virtually paint with the oil pastels if I want to without the paper buckling. The downside is that the oils need a coat of sealer so they don’t smudge whereas the gelatos do not. I really like them both for different looks.

I’m not sure I can give a definitive amount Sherry. I just keep adding until I’m happy with how it looks. I guess I would say, if you are seeing your paper underneath you may want to add more. Be sure to spray it, or rub off the excess with a paper towel to avoid it transferring to areas you don’t want it.
