Helppp at 6:50 when I try making the selection is doesnt give me the marching ants, and when I go to select modify, modify is greyed out. Any idea whats wrong?

At 7:32 at select > modify I cannot click on modify... I tried selecting just the stroke layer but it won't do anything, I tried selecting everything, or just certain things, but it won't work :( What am I doing wrong?
