Let's create the most filthy guitar tone!
German producer Kristian Kohle (Aborted, Powerwolf, Eskimo Callboy, Hämatom, Van Canto, Sinister, Benighted), known for his IR packs with EMINENCE DIGITAL and BOGREN DIGITAL mixes 5 guitar pedals and two distortion chains to create something truly disgusting!

I've lost count of how many times I've said to myself: "That's the most evil and filthy sounding thing I've heard today. I love it!" Today was one of those times. I've been experimenting with something similar to this "in the box" with plugins like BiasFx, but I never would of thought of using a monophonic octaver. That monophonic "thrash" from it's tracking reaching it's limitations is absolutely StAnK-TaCuLoR!!! It's swamp assy. It's chugs hang in the air like some low end Beelzebub Burrito fart of death. Love it! Thanks man!

I've tried something similar to this myself, you can get some really chunky sounds by mixing in a subtle bit of sub octave into a distorted guitar tone. It works well with a more conventional distortion sound too. Plus if your bass player is late you can just turn up the octave to taste lol.

So nice! Thanks for showing some alternative ways to go. In These days we are often taught that everything is possible " in the box" and that there is no need for any outboard gear anymore. This is the proof they're all wrong. If you want to create non-standard-sound, you need to use a non-standard-setup.

What I have really loved is running 2 fuzzes into each other with a Horizon Drive in front and an eq boosting 250 and 8k after to bring out the growl and attack. I'm running a doom bloom into a wooly mammoth and the mix of gated fuzz and bass fuzz balances everything out for huge and nasty tone. I primarily use a 9 string but it sounds sick all the way up to standard E.

So the signal chain is: Guitar --> Mudkiller --> Lehle P-Split and from the splitter goes: Line A: Revv G4 --> direct to Power amp channel Line B: Big Muff --> Octave pedal --> Clean channel You can use his signal chain in this video of him as some kind of a template, and tweak to your preference, maybe replace some of the pedals mentioned with what you have.

I got a pretty ugly tone by downtuning my guitar a step below the intended tuning then pitchshifting the DI back up...the pitchshifter just seemed to give it a touch of ugly artifacting. this is a great example how to create an interesting sound with the gear you already own. fun fact: I just listed my Nano Big Muff for sale on the local used market, as I could not make it work with my Orange Dual Dark head. the sound was muffled, as if I would have a blanket over my speakers, no matter the settings. not all heads respond/work well with the pedals, it turns out the Dual Dark does not takes Muffs well, but is shines with Tonebender style of fuzzes.

Great tone, but how does it sound in a full mix with dual / quad tracking ? I think the phase issues you have in plugins is inherent to the way DSP works, while in analog electronics there is pretty much no phase delay, which is why you get an actually usable tone.

Man Christian! That is a next Level Killertone!!! Thx for the inspiration! Sadly Iam not able to set it up like you, because my amp does not have a clean channel nor a parallel loop. BUT!! for people like me, who are missing such things (iam missing the splitter too) it works (kind of) too by putting the Big muff in the loop and pushing the front of the amp with a tubesreamer...my Sigil does a great job like that...maybe consider a noisegate in the loop too... This is what I miss about old school extreme metal, so many modern bands would be more interesting if their guitar tones and mixing weren't all so same-y. There are still a handful of modern extreme metal bands that still sound nasty, mostly in the doom/sludge/grind world, but most modern death metal is so sterile, I crave more stuff like Disma and Cruciamentum.

TY for not doing the full on "modern mix BS" and everyone is just EQ-ing like everyone else is, some of the most successful crushing metal albums ever had filthy distortion and low end flub for example Korn Life is Peachy tone/1998 Slipknot self titled album tone, and it was all wild and free and filthy/gritty/had hair on nuts like metal should be and was, now all these "modern players try and tighten there tone/distortion up to much and put it in a nice office suit and give it a proper hair cut and make it clean and nice(gross) and they have to be out infront of the mix like a hey notice me, now all bands sound the same and lack luster and to mid focused when people overall are more attracted to low end grunt/rumbble in music(in general) and the lack of that in metal has been making metal less interesting for years. The late 90s-mid 2000s years where metal music was BIG and at its peak and was when most bands had major low end rumble and grunt. The best sounding and successful crushing platinum metal albums the guitars wernt cutting through or lost in the mix, it was THE MIX, every instrument played was all together to have that huge wall of metal sound hit that bands dont have today. LOVE this kind of distortion. I use the big muff into my Diezel VH4 pedal with half scooped mids and slightly boosted lows with the highs around 12-1 Oclock and im in Nu-Metal filthy/gritty heaven.

As soon as the tones are especially crusty, you have my attention ;D. I actually did something similar to this with an old Boss fuzz and just a pitch shifter VST on my very first recording attempts, but I of course had no idea what I was doing and it sounded pretty shitty. Interesting that the concept wasn't completely terrible though. I was going to get the "Muffaletta" from JHS anyways, this may be something fun to play with and an excuse for octave fuzz round 2. In the unlikely event you haven't seen that pedal btw, it's basically all relevant variants of the Big Muff smashed into one, all-analog components, no emulation. They do similar models based on the RATs and Tube Screamers as well :). I have the "Pack Rat" model, and it's really cool so far.

This is incredible, I'm inspired! I have a question about the p-split. I have one but I have a problem where when I split a signal from a guitar with passive pickups the output sounds like sh*t. I read the manual and it says you should use some kind of a signal boost before the p-split when trying to split a passive pickup signal but it seems like you didn't have any trouble with the setup in this video. Is there something I should be doing differently if I want to use passive pickups with my p-split?
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I never had any issues. But what about using another pedal before the split? Something like a Tube Screamer.
@jmstep67
@jmstep67 2 жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult I figured it out. This was only an issue for me because I was splitting half the signal to an amp and the other half to an audio interface input at line level. That is the only scenario where the manual says passive pickups shouldn't be used. Splitting to two amps (or to a preamp and power amp of the same amp like you did) does not create a problem for passive pickups.

You could also use a Boss LS2 pedal, then you wouldn't need the splitter or the effects loop! If I'm understanding correctly.

Hey Kristian! I think you could profile that with the Kemper using a good load box (I think you have the Red Seven one right?). You'd need to work with other IRs, which maybe most Kemper users don't like, but I actually prefer working with DI profiles + IRs. Of course you'd need to commit to ONE sound, but that's how Kemper works, right? I'm still a newbie on it :)

The Kemper just can’t capture multiple distortion units in one chain. It never sounds accurate. It has nothing to do with thee we can or IRs.

That's a very cool tone. I've been using a 37 year old pedal I got off ebay for £6.66 years ago, to get a nice dirty but tight tone.
