AFTER EFFECTS EXPRESSION TO COPY & PASTE
Position expression:
NumberAcross = Math.ceil(Math.sqrt(thisComp.numLayers));
W = thisComp.width/NumberAcross;
H = thisComp.height/NumberAcross;
gridPos = index ;
col = gridPos % (NumberAcross+0.0001) ;
row = Math.ceil(1/(NumberAcross/gridPos));
xPos = (thisComp.width/NumberAcross)*(col-1);
yPos = (thisComp.height/NumberAcross)*(row-1);
[(xPos+W/2) ,(yPos+H/2)]
Scale expression:
NumberAcross = Math.ceil(Math.sqrt(thisComp.numLayers));
xSize = (thisComp.width/width)*100/NumberAcross;
ySize = (thisComp.height/height)*100/NumberAcross;
[xSize,ySize]
Now the expression works to create the following perfect split screens grids for your next musical collaboration or remote interview, 4, 9, 16. 25, and so on, as many as you like.

If its not too much to ask, could you include (either in the vid or the description) a short explanation on the actual functions of the commands in the expressions? Yay! Hope people find this useful. Great tutorial! If you want to put 16:9 clips into a square comp, I'd suggest putting your clips into their own square pre-comps and reframing them there, then drag that pre-comp into your main square split screen comp. You don't need to actually export them.

I tried that method, but it was a bit more laborious! I found that if you tried to replace the precomps it would change all the duplicates

@@PremiereGal Hi ! thank for the video and the tut, for square version it work to. All you need to do when it time to replace is make sur that you are select the comp you wont to replace and it done. We don't have control of the space between clips.

I never know how you do it. Just edited a programme in a series of 20. The featured artist is not worthy of a lone promotion, I thought of doing something like this but decided it was a lot of work that was not warranted. I can do it easily now, and get time to go for a lockdown blast on my bicycle. thank you so much.....nice new presenter look as well, btw.

This is awesome! I'm a complete and total rookie with Premiere but have done quite a bit with iMovie. Figured it was time to step up my game. I'm working on a little video where I have several 2nd graders saying lines. I recorded them socially distant - each in their own clip. What would be the best tool to put them together speaking at the right time, but making it look like they are all in the same scene? In iMovie, I'd probably just use a split screen and do just 2 speakers at a time. It would be great to see all of them, but only have their clip play when it was their turn to speak. Does that make sense? Thanks for your tutorials!! SO very helpful! :)

Hm, the script doesn't seem to work when I export from AE to Premiere. I got an error dialogue saying, "The preset used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead." There are no third-party components being used, though. Just these expressions. Any clues?

It is pretty sweet thank you. :) But would be nice if you could add some motion after. Like precomp, appear full-frame then move in to the mosaic.... Maybe it can be done but I could not, even precomopsing options.

Hi! Wow magic! But how can I go the other way round? I synchronize a big choir in Premiere and wanted to put the expression in AE after sent it there, but it won't work anymore because he does not apply the copy effect on already existing videos in the comp. I cannot replace them, because it would replace them with the full vid and not the already synced version from premiere. Can you help? :)

Hey Gloria - Expressions can only be used in After Effects, but after you create the split in AE using the expression you can export the project as a Premiere a Pro project and open it in PR. If you don’t have AE, I designed a template for PR manually which is available on my store: premieregal.com/store

Thank You so much for your video. It's very helpful. Just that when I tried using this expression on a shape layer or a solid, it creates duplicates but goes into a corner immediately. Technically I wasn't able to fill up the screen entirely no matter how many copies i made the tiles just kept getting smaller. If anyone has a solution for this please let me know. I'd really appreciate it.. Also thanks to Jamie :)

This is game changing! Thanks Jamie for this and thanks Gal for promoting it! Do you know if it's possible to re-adjust the sizing in Premiere Pro to customize the split screens? Or is the code locked in, and we can only change the vids? I decided to try it out myself and I get this error : " The preset used by one or more sequences requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead. To continue editing using the original preset, quit the application without saving the project, reinstall any third-party components athat are required and reopen the project. " The files import and I can hear their audios simultaneously in the timeline but the Program viewer is black. What's the third-party component they're talking about ? What do I do! Many thank you's!

@@zanelgeorge6568 I wish I can help, I can't remember at all if I solved the issue but I do know that I ended up using premiere instead of after effects and doing everything from scratch.

Edit - I think I understand now. I believe you sell your artwork on the site as a creator and earn commissions from the sales. But I'm not 100% sure.

Hmm. Having a bit of a problem with the expressions. The first 3 work fine but when I go to duplicate #4 it jumps to 4 videos but in a 9 screen template (the other screens are black). This pattern continues as I add videos by duplicating. Any ideas? Thanks for your help if you can.

Wonderful content as always! But when I export the AE project to a Premiere project, all the videos (9 in this case) all come up with a scale of zero. Is there a step I'm missing?

for square video why not put video into a precomp???

Because when you duplicate it, it duplicates the same precomp and when you go to alt/opt drag the new footage to replace it will replace all the precomps with the same video. I wish there was a way to use precomps, but I haven't figured it out yet!

MIght use split screen someday. Right now no. I'm working on the theory that watching a movie is a direct feed into your primary consciousness, so split screen interrupts the feed.
