Here's a walkthrough I made about how to create realistic sounding orchestral mockups.
I did a quick test using Valhalla Room reverb instead, and it sounds just as good, perhaps even better :)

Hi! I absolutely love the sound you got here! I've been thinking recently about getting an orchestral library, since there are a lot of sales now, and I've seen that berlin series from orchestral tools are on 50%, do you think that I would be able to achieve with the berlin series such nice, extremely realistic sound as you managed to do in the video? I've noticed that a lot of people mix up different libraries and so I'm worried that relying only on OT berlin orchestra won't be enough to get the realistic feel. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial! Best regards.

@dbeijbom
@dbeijbom 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :) So for the reverb here I only use logics own stuff. Space Designer - Dream hall for the long tail, and Big Drums for some room. For mastering I don't really use much. Sometimes I'll add some EQ (SSL G Channel) and OTT on the output bus just for some added shimmer, but other than that I don't really add much to the output.
@Tsharkeye

Don't know if i missed it but i see OTT on your master bus. I only know how to use it as an effect, how do you use it to master orchestral tracks?

I just use it to brighten the track a bit :) I'll boost some of the highs with it to make it "shine" a bit more

Hey Daniel, I have a quick question, Hoping you would reply :) So Lets say I am Using a Violin 1 Patch which says it has 16 players on it. When I play two notes, will it become 32 violins "Technically" ?. The more notes I play on a single patch does it multiply the overall players in the patch?. So what should I do when I have divisi or double stops?
@dbeijbom
@dbeijbom 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Harsha. Yes :) Some sample libraries have auto-divisi meaning if you play chords it will split it up according to how many players you have, but if it's a normal string patch then if you play chords you will get an unrealistic amount of players. So by simply choosing violins 2 patch you will now be back to a normal amount of players. If you need more divisi then you might not have another choice than simply using violins 1 patch again, unless there is a patch called vln1 divisi, which I've never seen.

Dude, this is very cool. Thank you. Question: Get the mock-up to flow with rubato, super! In the end, if you had to drop this into notation, how would that be marked? Say....if you used this for a cue with hitpoints. You take this to the recording stage. How would that work? Thanks for taking the time out to make this video....
@dbeijbom
@dbeijbom 6 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Thanks! :) Well honestly I am not sure myself. I think I would put the tempo markings on the score and then just let the conductor lead the way, or simply let those cues be free form, using punches and streamers instead of click. Let me know if you yourself do it and how you did it :)
@benshirleymusic
@benshirleymusic 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer. I just put the original tempo marking and the players always play to the click. There always seems to be a loss of the "push-pull-sway" thing going on. Everything has to be so rigid, or so it seems, in the studio. It all has to be lined up strictly on the the grid. I think that' the billion dollar question. John Williams' name always gets used but if you see the old sessions with him conducting the Star Wars session, you see he's conducting to the picture and he controls that in real time. There's the push-pull thing happening. I don't think we have the option to do that today. "Let's try this out." Can you imagine having the luxury of trying something out with the orchestra? Wow.... I'm not asking that question enough. There has to be a better way. Seeing your mock-up with the tempo track exposed made me think, "Wait a minute........." Thank you! Again....stuff sounds great, man. Thanks for the music and making the light go on.

Hi Daniel,how r u ?Planning to take ur course.I have few doubts. 1.Without knowing much theory,how do u come up with super music like chords, melody? 2.How do you orchestrating section like violin 1,2,viola,cello,brass,trombone etc I mean how u writing that without sounding muddy,without clashing .Do you do with trial and error method ? 3.Recommemded RAM for these types of music is 32gb ram enough?How much you have? Thank you.

Hi! Ok, so in my trailer music course I don't go over the basics of theory or harmony, those kinds of courses you could check out over at Evenant.com, some friends of mine that offer great courses. My course if more about my approach to trailer music, where I explain some of the basics that are needed to make the track licensable, and also my personal way of writing, with lots of walkthroughs showing how my tracks are built. Yes, 32gb are definitely enough. I only recently got 32 myself :)
