In this video I will be walking you through my complete process for creating and planning gravel and mixed-terrain rides on Forest Service roads and Mountain Roads. Using Garmin Connect Course Creator, I will show you how to choose your roads by looking at different map views, what to look out for, how to plan water stops, and other helpful safety tips to help you create and navigate the perfect routes on your longer gravel riding adventures and days out in the mountains. Hope you enjoy this video tutorial!

What a thorough and well thought out approach to creating mixed terrain routes using Garmin functinoality between their bike computers and the Connect app. I also live in Seattle and like to ride on mixed terrain, so the routes you are picking out, are local for me. I have wanted to start creating me own routes and through this video, you have just provided a complete roadmap for doing so. I appreciate the level of detail on how to pick out good roads, find water sources, on down to sharing your approach for starting with pavement sections for a warm-up. Many thanks, this is maybe my favorite KZfaq video ever. Seriously, nice work!

Thanks for this. It is amazing that how to do this is not explained anywhere by Garmin (that I can find). Here in the UK we don’t have the same abundance of gravel routes, but following your description I find it works well on our bridle ways.

Cheers dude. I have been gravel riding in the Northern Territory, Australia for a number of years using physical topo maps. I've recently considered buying a computer because of a few gnarly situations in the outback. Your video is great man. Highlights the most important thing... water! Never ride without water purification tablets good people. 👍

Glad you are inspired! For potentially dangerous wildlife around where I ride, there are black bears and cougars. Black bears will usually go the other direction and wont attack people unless directly threatened. There have been some cougar attacks in the past but they are extremely rare.

Well explained for those who are not familiar with the planner. Another feature I use is course points with notes for water food or a point to turn off to abandon the route and get back quickly. If needed I would have saved a new route starting there and on the garmin ready. Its great how a planned route gives you more confidence to explore further. Loving the bike. What do you use to filter river water and do you treat it with anything after the filter? Its not something I've done yet 🤔

Rich Wade Hey Rich, thanks! That’s an awesome idea having alternative routes saved on the Garmin. And I haven’t tried out the course points feature for notes, I’ll check that out. Thanks for the tips. For my water filter, I use a Sawyer mini. It’s been great, super light and small and I’ve never had a problem with it. I bring some water tablets for backup. And I’ve been loving the bike too. I’m thinking of getting fork suspension on it soon, in hopes of speeding up decents and adding some comfort

@@cyclistpete2090 I'm still learning too. The other cool thing when you do the points on your Garmin you get another screen with a list of your points and how far to them. I guess there are other things but I've only been experimenting with it since January. The one part I want to understand more is when you go off track and rerouting to get back. I can not work out the Garmin's logic so don't trust it. Thats a whole vid for that I guess.

Thanks for the thorough overview of this app, as well as practical advice for what to look for and avoid. Can you compare this app vs. one like Komoot or Ride with GPS?

Hey, thanks for the comment. I haven't tried either of those apps yet. But I have been wanting to. I will try to check them out in the next few months and make a video comparison between them. Subscribe to my channel so you wont miss the vid :)

How do you re-order course points? For example, in case you need to add an additional midpoint. Instead of putting this point all the way to the end of the route, I want to see a list of the points that I have created so that I can easily move them around. I am having difficulty finding the list of route points that I have created on the web browser. Thanks.

be honest did u 100% follow the trail u built and did u not fully trust it at all throughout the ride just curious

Yes. I followed the course exactly. I went off on one little part for that "bonus climb", but went back to the main course after I climbed it. But honestly, I never totally trust my courses I make. But the more I make without any issues, the more confidence I gain. And I didn't have any issues with rides this year. Pretty good!
