Hotter tip: At the end of each row, put a stitch marker. That way, if you mess up the row, you can just restart the row instead of the whole piece. (if you don't have stitch markers, a safety pin works)

When I knit I must use metal needles but when I crochet it must be a plastic hook. The plastic crochet hook is a lot rounded at the edge and doesn’t get caught like the metal ones.

It depends on how many petals you want to have in your flower. Mine has 22 petals, so I crocheted 68 chains. Here's the math for it: Each petal needs 3 stitches (Number of petals × 3) + 2 = Number of chains to start with.
