Thanks Michael, I appreciate seeing how you do it. I have found that when I tried this method using the vegetables that the smell is very strong. One has to have a place to keep the jars where the smell is not objectionable. Here in winter Canada it can't be in the garage either, since everything freezes solid in unheated spaces. (Today temps are -15 deg C) Another key item is if you don't have the right infusoria in your established tanks to begin with, they won't appear in the culture. But perhaps most people have lots of infusoria already in their tanks.
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, Actually the smell isn't much of a problem, unless you stick your nose down in the jar. I keep them in my fish room, and don't have any unwanted odeurs ;0) I feel that any established tank has plenty of infusoria, especially if you add a few plants (that will be loaded with the small critters) to the culture :0)

I have a shady, screened back porch, so open jars aren't a problem. I have a shelf that doesn't get any direct sun and there's lots of bright light all day. But does the outside temperature affect the culturing process? It's 89°-95° pretty much through the summer in South Carolina. I could culture this in my garage where the temps are around 80° but light only comes in during the afternoons. Which would be the better location? Also, can full grown nano fish (raspboras, guppies, tetras) and shrimp eat this? Thanks for doing this extremely helpful video!
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 2 жыл бұрын
Temperatures exeeding 90 F might present a problem, caused primarily by hot waters poor ability to contain enough oxygen for these small organisms. Your nano fish will be able to eat infusoria, but they will need more substancial meals as well. Cheers, Michael :0)

Hi Sem. That is possible, but there's always a risk of overheating, which can cause a drop in oxygen and make the culture collapse. Try it out, but remember that most useful infusoria thrives around room temperatures, say 20 -27 Celsius. Good luck, Michael :0)

How many time magnify/zoom are you using to see the infusoria at minite 7:06? I don't have luck to culture infusoria or I may not see them. Can I feed my first few day blue gourami fries with the microworms or vinegar eels? Thanks,
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell exactly how many x the footage is magnified. Depending on the screen you watch, I will guess around 5 to 10X. You should be able to see the infusoria using a standard magnifying glass, though. Actually you can se the moving clouds with the bare eye. My advice is to start gourami fry on infusoria the first few days. A useful alternative is hard boiled egg yolk, that has saved a batch of fry for me, when I wasn't prepared. Hard boil an egg, take the yolk and wrap in a small piece of gauze, compressing it so small portions protrude through the cloth. Feed sparringly but often. Hope this helps you out. yeast feeds on sugar and I'm not sure what else, vegetables have only very little sugars(monosaccharides and dissacharides), I think what would be better is to add fish food, a bit of warmth, and a bit of bruised,smashed, boiled cooled vegetables with aquarium water to reduce scum produce by having easier breaking down by bacteria than fungus form rotten foods

Vinayak. I can't say anything precise on that. That depends of the concentration of infusoria in your culture and the amount of fry you are feeding. Hi Mathilda. Hard to give a precise guideline for that, since every culture will be different. The best indicator is the belly of the small fry. If the are fat, you feed them enough. That vary considerable, depending on temperature, water and oxygen - but typically from 4 days to a week or more. Cheers, Michael :0)

I got it right the first time itself. Some tips: Use transparent container.(I used a glass jar) Don't make the jar airtight. Boil the vegetable waste first and then wait for the water to cool down. After it cools down, add water from an aquarium with fish.
