I recommend that if you didn’t that you bake wood and leaves from outside at 200 degrees for 30 minutes so there’s no possible hitch hikers of any kind

I've heard some people boil the leaves too. I baked mine for longer actually, just to be safe. But I think boiling the leaves may be the better way to go, I'll be trying it next time

I had read you could not use locally obtained isopods unless the culture had been established for two years, thanks for showing it's not

Do containers like these need a drainage area? If not, how often do you change out the whole set up?

I have a sow bug (only found one he was pretty small but he's a tad big now) I have him in a old cheese puff jug just a question they can have tomatoes right? I gave him one and he's just been on it also if he burrows does that mean he likes the place he's in cause I was gonna love him in a bigger jar but he's just one little guy sharing the jar with a worm cause I kinda just found the worm near him

Everytime I use magnolia leafs in my cultures they keep molding up on me. I dont know y cause they dont mold up in my enclosures that I use leaf litter in and I use the same substrate for the cultures as I use in my vivariums

You probably have either too much water or there isn't enough air flow. try adding springtails to your colony. Those guys like to eat that sutff

Do you have to use de-chlorinated water. The water in my city uses chloromines, which does not evaporate over time.

Can the culture survive only on leaves or do you HAVE to add fruit/veggies/fish food occasionally?
@ThatFrogGuy
@ThatFrogGuy 6 жыл бұрын
r3g5 primarily they will survive on the decomposition of the leaves but I add some fish food and some vegetables once in a while.

Another question sorry, they can be in closed containers like in your video right? I didn't know for sure so I put a hole with a cloth over it to keep the humidity in the jar (doesn't work super well but the water dries slower ig)

Do u know any homemade food for isopods? :)
@paul-robinfranz9272
@paul-robinfranz9272 7 жыл бұрын
TokeDenOP They basically break down rotting wood and old leaves, which is their main source of food, but you should also feed them things like slices of potato, carrot or cucumber like once a week (depending on how fast they eat it). Also dry fish food is a good source of protein for them.
@paul-robinfranz9272
@paul-robinfranz9272 7 жыл бұрын
TokeDenOP Obviously you can, but I actually don't get the point of people doing it. You often get some great little animals with things you collectet by yourself, that help cleaning and just making your setup more natural. The chances of you getting any harmful mites or something similar are as low as it can get...

Okay. But how many time a dag should i spray with water, if i have isopods? I use then like a cleanup crew to my ballpython.
@paul-robinfranz9272
@paul-robinfranz9272 7 жыл бұрын
TokeDenOP It really depends on how fast your setup drys out. I keep them in all my forest living gecko enclosures and spray them down every day once in the evening. If you keep them like in shown in the video, you probably just have to spray like once a week. They basically just have to stay moist but not damp.

i leanrd a good amount fromthis video, but i will just inform u, from the perspective of someone that has cept a lot of animals, that there are pestasides and parcites littuarly almost everywere on this whole planet, so a good rule of thumb is to always cook or bake anything that u take from the nature into somewere u are gonna keep animales that are not localy caught

Is it best to just order a culture of springtails or isopods from a website rather than trying to find them?
@ThatFrogGuy
@ThatFrogGuy 6 жыл бұрын
DMZ Hellerman i would recommend by buying your first starting colony then once you manage to keep them go out and lift riocks, logs and leaf litter and see what you can find!

Too bright! I got two cultures of dwarf whites and dwarf purples but i put both in a separate opaque or dark enclosures. You should note that they don't like it when it's too bright.

Good note!! since the creation of this video I have moved all of my cultures into a dark closet and keep them out of the direct sun.

If you have em in a dark room, then you should be good to go.. I have mine in my room with bright lights all the time so i got no choice but to purchase a dark enclosure for em.. They're just like roaches, totally hate light, especially my dwarf purples who scrams for cover every time i open up the lid..
