Old trick from the 90s, take a used large soup can, peel off the label, heat up the open side on the oven burner (don't burn yourself, use oven mits) then simply press the hot end through the head. Now you have a perfectly round hole that is 'cauterized' from the melted edges that won't tear.

I did likewise but used a small Maxwell House coffee can. I made sure both ends were open, and I used thick Craftsman pliers with rubber insulated handles to pick up the heated can to place on the kick drum logo head.

Yup, I've definitely done this before, but with a coffee can. Worked out great. Probably more fun than using the cutting tool too 😅

Excellent. I am about the drill my first hole in my head. I note the tips in some comments about using a heated-up soup can but I think I will get the implement you use. They're only about £8. I see you can get 'drum ports' to fit around the hole too. Touted as protecting it... I don't know about that (and you say the resulting hole is smooth and won't be a weakness), but a chrome red one would look cool. Thanks, G.

Mr. Good just said that's great, but now my great kick drum just lost 20% of the low end and sounds wimpy. The tool worked very well though, and thanks!

In my case the cutting tool slips out of my hands into a passing schoolbus which crashes into a church catching on fire --- yes I'm that unlucky !!!

The head cutter is good but it dulls quickly so I couldn't get it to work after the second time I used it. If you have multiple kits you may want to buy two.

make sure you use on cardboard. Had mine for like 7 years now, no problems. Just take your time when you are cutting. IF you do it on wood it'll just kinda crimp the head and make a dent in the wood.

i don't like ported heads unless u wanna add a Kickport! it'll be tha only way i would consider a ported head if i'm gunna also have a kickport

To get the low end of the sound, also, easier for kick mics.

drum heads kinda don't vibrate well if they can't well...vibrate because they lost their center

Hate to say it, but this product is not good. Blade was dull and ruined my logo head. Would not recommend at all.

Incorrect information--Simon actually does use a hole on the front heads of his bass drums, recording and live.
