Thank you very much for posting this, I couldn’t find any advice anywhere else. I’ve got to cut down a garage door so I can store a golf cart in a low headroom lien to. I’ve got expansion springs, so I don’t have to worry about your difficulty winding the springs.

Sweet install! I have never used a come along to wind springs. Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep it in my back pocket.

I had a similar setup where I came in to fix a contractor’s screwups and they were stumped. My spring was wedged in similar to this one, but fortunately it was a Menards easy wind so I could just use a drill on it. Used some discontinued Wayne Dalton quick drop brackets on the top panel to make it close properly without an opener. Also had to clear a man door that swung in on the one side. Quite the learning experience.

Good job dude, never seen, wind with the cable trick. Use the grabber all the time with caution, to change bottom sections out, but never thought of winding a spring with it. I'll keep it safely in my bank of tricks.

@@affordabledoorgatellc7391 Came across this video. Great video by the way. Ok. Got a question for you. I got a free garage door from work today. I am closing my carport in so I can store my car. From I've calculated the vertical tracks are 1 foot too tall. If I were to cut one of the panels like you did. An also 1 foot from the vertical track as well so it was the same. Will that work. Thanks in advance. Hope I made sense. My carport is 12 foot wide the garage door on 9 foot wide, if that matters. Thanks!

@@brandon6572 sounds like you got it. If you take a foot out of the door section then your correct on taking a foot out of the door track. Good luck 👍

Help! Do you have a video on how to make a door narrower? I have an 8' wide opening now. I want to make it wider. I have a 9' wide door. But I don't have room for the 9" foot door due to a beam going down the center of the garage. Well, the door would fit but the rails won't. So I need to cut each panel to account for the width of the rails/tracks. I have an insulated Copley door. Any thoughts? Thanks

Great question but it was a job that we could have installed a blue tarp and I think the customer would have been happy I just wanted to get it done and they where happy it went up and down lol.

This has to be the worst install I have ever seen. Order a 6'9" Door. If one of my guy did that they would be fired! And the winding the spring via cable pull is super dangerous. On a small door with hidden springs like this it is safer and easier to hand lift it up and tension it in the open position.
