You are an amazing instructor. You are actually teaching with the thought that some of us are actually are beginners and know nothing. So many of the videos presume that we know how hold down a ruler and cut. I organized everything to begin a project and gave up because I could not make clean cuts even though my blade was sharp. I learned what I was doing wrong in your rotary cutting how to video. . Now you showed me how I was cutting incorrectly - when I would get half way up my ruler it would move and I ruined the piece of yardage. But, a more important problem is that I am on blood thinners and could have really sliced my fingers. Thank you

Your videos are always so clear and concise, really appreciate that! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'd like to suggest using a cut resistant glove on your ruler holding hand. I've started doing this after a couple close calls with the rotary cutter. Yeah, we always think it's not gonna happen to us, but it can. (check out your fellow KZfaqr Whitney Sews video about this...ouch!) Maybe you could carry some cute gloves in your new shop. Some of them also have grip fingertips to help grip the ruler. Gotta protect those creative hands! :-)

Great tutorial as usual! After cutting to straighten the edges, rather than flip the fabric over (sometimes it flips unevenly), look at what you trimmed off. If it's two layers, you're good! Another tip relates to you mentioning wasting fabric by trimming too much when squaring it up. In your example, you needed 4 pieces measuring 5" x 5" and 4 pieces measuring 3 1/2" x 5". Typically, you can get 8 cuts of 5" out of a width of fabric cut. So why not cut out the 5" x 5" pieces first (they are the largest) then cut the 3 1/2" x 5" pieces from the remainder. I noticed you cut two 5" strips. If the pattern only needs one cut, you'll save yourself that other strip :)

Hi Vanessa. Thanks for all of the informative videos. Is there any particular reason you don’t use the measuring lines on the cutting mat? I haven’t had any issues with that method but was wondering about you thoughts.
@DenisePoole-Closet-Crafts
@DenisePoole-Closet-Crafts 4 жыл бұрын
I do know that she has said in the past that she doesn't trust the lines on the mat because they're not very accurate, that's why she never uses them, also she said that if she could she would have a mat that was completely plain no grid lines on at all. Vanessa did say she would turn the mat over and use the Plain Side if she had one like that. She just uses the rule's nothing more, that was the way she was taught.

Yes, this is very helpful. I am left handed. I would like to see how you handle larger pieces like 10 yards. I need to straighten the edges and cut 2 1/2 yards off. It has been washed and is wrinkled . I find this much yardage overwhelming to work with. I am a newbie.

Thank you for sharing this. I just am wondering why you are not using the cutting mat to measure out the long strips? Is it not good to use the grid lines on the cutting mat to line up your long straight edge ruler to cut the strips? I am still learning..

Since you're not using a grippy ruler, how do you keep the ruler under your hand from slipping around? I find that even when I am putting firm pressure on it, it slides slightly, leaving me with wonky widths.

Hi Vanessa, since you only need 4 of the 3-1/2” x 5” rectangles, why wouldn’t you cut a 3-1/2” strip? Seems like you’re wasting fabric!
@TheCraftyGemini
@TheCraftyGemini 5 жыл бұрын
4 was just an example. Typically you’re cutting a lot more so I like to cut the larger number for the width of the strip so I can get more of the smaller dimension (in this case 3.5”) cuts when I sub cut it.

I understand, I do the same thing. But new quilters might not understand (or think of) the difference if you’re cutting a bunch or just a few. You might want to mention this, in your inimitable style! (Just MHO...)
