I love how you left in the part where you cut her nail too short. Most people would have left that out due to embarrassment or fear a bunch of radical animal activists would come at their throats, but everybody makes mistakes (and I know cutting nails that small isn't an easy task.) It's helpful for those who might be in that same situation and not know what to do. So thank you so much!

Thanks for this. I'm such a wimp that I've always taken my hedgehog to the vet to have his nails trimmed. If they did it during his normal well pet visit, they wouldn't charge me. Otherwise, it cost $25.00 a visit. My hedgehog is very laid back as well, and he doesn't mind being handled at all. I'm going to try your method, so thanks for posting!

I do actually have one or two! I made sure to gather up as much information as I could about how to care for him before taking him home, but none of that prepared me for the amount of poop this little guy creates! Are hedgehogs generally just tiny pooping machines? That is just fine, but it is just always all over his wheel. Do you find that your hedgehogs just go where ever the need strikes or do they tend to go in a certain spot that they like? Also, do you recommend any certain products for cleaning? I would like to use something to wipe down his wheel in-between the times that I take his cage apart for a more thorough cleaning.
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 8 жыл бұрын
insaneAFIfan This sure is a problem for most hedgehog keepers. They naturally poop while moving, so when on the wheel it just happens. For cleaning wheels I usually just take outside and spray down with the outside hose and spray nozzle. You can try putting a small litter box in the cage; however, most hedgehogs don't learn to use them. It's kind of something you just have to deal with. My hedgehogs also poop all over the cage. I just empty the cage and refill it about once a week, and usually clean the wheel about twice a week. I wish there was some magical way to get them to not poop there, if you or anyone else figures it out, be sure to share!

Earthling1984, Harry continues to be Harry. A terrified creature when first arrived. Seems like he had a traumatic childhood. However, over a year or so he gradually opened up. Not exactly a social creature as an adult, but runs over hopeful for food, falls asleep on people, and generally is tolerant. I guess that’s the best we can expect!

We have a wild hedgehog we rescued from busy road . It was exhausted and probably been chased .... ...after looking after it for two days , ..with plenty of crunchies, water and rest ... ..its now being released tonight down a local park deep in the undergrowth... Its 3lb and enormous ,! ..after chatting with vets they tell us it might be an elderly male . I was amazed how big the poop was ...cat size.! Well anyway, it's okay and quite happy . We are tempted to keep it as we are moving to the countryside cottage next month... But we feel it needs to live local.... Absolutely love him to bits. Kudos to those who look after hedgehogs . I could never even contemplate cutting its nails. Cutting cat and dog nails was bad enough ...lol. Loved the video .... We hope to look after one in future .... Lots of good tips here . Thank you 💚💚💚💚💚

Hedgehogs are cool animals! I would suggest letting that hedgehog go. It was a wild living hedgehog. It has it's own life out there. We should only keep animals as pets that were captive bred. They were born in a cage and know nothing else. Animals that are living outside have their own life. Unfair for us to take them and put them in a cage.
@morganjames5180

@@earthling1984 You are right, I agree We only looked after it , as it parked itself for hours looking stunned. Like I said we checked with wildlife vet first. We were even enquiring where best to put it as no one has bushes or anything ..where we live now. Nothing but busy roads . As for looking after one in country , ..I meant offer them a home if they entered our garden. Let them come and go at there own freewill ... Our next garden backs onto fields and a forest. Many residents in the village have hedgehogs living everywhere. We would never capture it as such. Just offer it use of our garden ...and crunchies etc . ( like feeding wild birds ). I am against captured animals , ..I just enjoy giving a helping hand ..to any wildlife ... 💚💚💚

Luckily we found someone, a registered hedgehog help charity. ...and dropped them all off. They were okay , the highly experienced hedgehog lady had a peek, ...just to confirm the babies are still alive and happy She has a perfect set up for it . When they are all old enough ... ...she will release them all together somewhere safe near where we live. ...somewhere away from busy toads etc. We are so happy as we were so worried . After we disturbed them all , not knowing about the babies, ...we were so so worried mom would attack her them or worst ... ..but luckily she didnt. This morning we were in shock! I kept and bred over 50 hedgehogs. :) All were calm and tame since I started handling them at around 1 week of age. Sadly, there are a lot of bad breeders out there who sell too early just for money (hedgehogs should be with breeder until 3 months). They should be handled daily and socialized before sale. But, lots of breeders just are neglectful and just in it for the quick buck.

Thanks for the kind comment and good luck with your hedgehog! As for nails, it just depends how fast they grow. Just look at their nails every once in a while and if they look too long, give them a clip. Usually about once a month is what I do. This girls had grown a bit longer this time, I think it's been a couple months since her last trim and as you can see they were pretty long!

I can't cut his nails, he just squirms and squirms until I let him go. They're definitely not as long as those nails tho, so I might just leave them be. I dunno what to do with them.

:) Glad to help! Just a couple tips (things most people ask about). First is food. Make sure to only feed high quality cat food, no cheap junk; I use Blue Buffalo or Royal Canin. This 8 year old hedgehog lived her whole life on 90% just that. I also give freezedried mealworms (mix with catfood) and veggies/fruits from time to time. Heating is also very important. Hedgehogs need to be oer 74F. Around 77F is a great temperature for them. A small reptile heatlight (like those red ones) works great. Just a small 25W heatlight over the cage should raise it to a safe level (use a thermometer to test temp). And I'm sure you know to use Aspen for bedding, not pine or cedar. Other than that just a wheel and your set. Good luck with your hedgehog!

Royal Canin is great! No, don't use hedgehog food. There are no good hedgehog foods on the market that I have seen. I just keep dry cat food basically always in the cage.

Watermelon probably isn't the best choice. You should look up on google 'what vegetables and fruits are good for hedgehogs' and you should find a list. 1 month old?!? Wow, that breeder is selling way to early. I never sold till at least 2.5 months. They need time to socialize and grow and get tame around humans from the breeder handling daily. Many breeders sell way to young so they can sell easy and make the most with the least work. But, what I would suggest is at least handle first. I wouldn't buy a month old hedgehog myself. I feel they need time with other hedgehogs (their mom and siblings until about 1.5 months, then separate the males and leave the females with the mom until about 2.5 to 3 months) to grow and learn. But, at least handle before buying. Make sure the hedgehog is calm, tame, and doesn't just curl up scared. My hedgehogs I sold were all easily handled by the new owners before purchase. Good luck! Search my channel for 'hedgehog' to see all the hedgehog videos I have. Lots of great info and just some fun videos too!

HELLLPPPPPPP!!! My hoglets are 16 daays old, and momma started biting them. Syringe with goats milk every few hours to hand feed? What else besides goats milk can I use, also, when they are 3 weeks, what can I feed them then?
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
How bad was she biting them? Sometimes the moms just move the babies around with their mouths... And usually the babies are fine with the mom after a week or so passes. You can start feeding them high quality wet cat/kitten food once they accept it. You may want to get some baby kitten formula too to add to the goatsmilk to help add more nutrition. Probably should have left with the mom though if she didn't eat or cause any actual damage to any.

When we first got him he was very shy and scared but now he will open up in my hand and let me handle him. (Which I am pretty happy about) I thought he was a tan/brown hedgehog but when I bathed him today I found out that he was actually white with brown striped quills in some spots, and I am pretty sure the previous owner neglected him... His quills are pretty "tangled" and look really crazy and messy, ive tried to look this up but have had no luck finding info on it, do you have any idea whats going on? P.S. When I bathed him and brushed him for about 20 minutes to try and fix this his quills straightened out, but shortly after they went back to being a mess

Hmm. That is weird. I've never really seen 'tangled' quills. They can stick up every which way when the hedgehog is not yet calm around you. It is normal for them to go all directions until fully tame. But, I think you are saying they are even more 'tangled' than that. Not really sure what this is.

We just got hedgehogs a week ago and my hedgehog he has been fine and now all of a sudden he started popping green slime kinda clear poop we haven't changed his food but he has been eating some mealworms and they are fine for him. We are thinking its from stress kids wanting to see him and our dogs he was nose to nose with one just today, any suggestions?
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
Could be from too much stress in first week. The hedgehog needs to always be handled very calmly, they are often scared/nervous until they full trust their humans. Also, make sure to only feed high quality cat food (My 8 year old hedgehog ate Blue Buffalo or Royal Canin her whole life + some freezedried mealworms and some veggies/fruits from time to time).

hi I am thinking of getting a hedgehog and watched all your videos on then found it very helpful, wanted to ask you, is it better getting a baby or a grownup. as the pet store has both small and grown ups
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
It's best to get one that is calm and tame. People often buy small animals that bite, are scared, or aggressive. Handle all of them, and pick out the one you like / the nicest one. It's fine to get ones that are older, they can live for 8+ years. I doubt they are that old in the pet store anyways. I do prefer myself to get younger pets so they can live their whole lives in my care, but, if the older ones are nicer, I'd for sure go with the older ones. The young ones should be nice if brought up by good breeder. But, lots of bad breeders out there.

Chantelle Coetser Should be just fine. It depends on the child of course. I had pets when I was young and was even breeding hamsters by around age 7 by myself. I of course would suggest parental supervision during handling, especially until tamer.

My hedgehog bit me my mom said that she bit me cause i am suppose to hold her everyday.Do i have to hold her everyday
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 8 жыл бұрын
You should hold every day. Also, it's best to buy pets that don't bite or act aggressive in the first place (your moms fault). You wouldn't buy a dog or cat that was mean/aggressive, but, people buy small animals that weren't brought up well all the time. Buy from a quality breeder or even pet store, handle first, and make sure the animal was socialized and nice before purchasing. None of my 50+ hedgehogs have ever bitten, so it shocks me when people say they have been bit by a hedgehog. For now, use gloves, be very calm while handling, and handle daily. In time your hedgehog should come around. Your mom should help with handling too and making sure the hedgehog is taken care of correctly.

@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
ZeMo TapzZ Depends on type of lettuce. There are countless varieties. Do a google search and look up what is good for them. Hedgehogs do sleep often; however, if it is sleeping all the time it may be too cold. Is the cage at least 75F? It should be around 77F. Any lower than 74F and they can get slow and eventually hibernate and/or die. Make sure your hedgehog cage is warm enough.

@alyxwithay6516

It was a strange accident, and the "new hedgehog", which we thought was female because we couldn't get him to unroll and I took the breeders advice which I shouldn't have done, and thats how that happened. She has two babies that are exactly two weeks old. I handled them at 10 days and now everybody is doing good! Dad has his own new cage. Two owners for both babies now. The male seems to be alright, he's in the living room and we joke that he's going to fight pit bulls because he's really buff and runs in his wheel 6 hours a night lol Mother is in the hallway on a stand in a large tank with a heat lamp that ranges at 78F. Things are going pretty good. Third female is in her own box across on a wooden stand in her own tank now.

Evil Snail oh I was pretty upset. I purchased another, assuming it was female, to prevent any form of breeding, I just wanted to have a couple years between them so I wouldn't be as upset if anything were to happen due to age. I am by no means a breeding person lol I primarily chose females because I liked the temperament of my first (different breeder) who happened to be a female. First two females shared a very large 250G tank and were extremely close. I removed one because the of accident, I actually feel like she's depressed. Babies have forever homes, that was the first thing I established. Babies are cute, but so much more messy than adults. I do appreciate how you reacted, I too frown upon irresponsible breeding. Especially in my state, Arizona, hedgehogs became legal almost 3 years ago, now they're flooding shelters and never tamed. But now I guess I have an albino male. He seems alright being by himself. Named him "Cheese".

Evil Snail I am very thankful that the mother is doing okay. I recently had a scare with a UTI and it is super difficult force feeding a cranky hedgehog antibiotics twice a day. And expensive. I'm so happy it was a small litter as well. I was terrified she was going to parent 5+. I would be devastated if I lost her in that process.

@earthling1984 6 жыл бұрын
Rylie Bomberger Don't worry. Hedgehog will be fine. It is not good to cut too far, so, be more careful in the future! But, don't worry about it. A nail cut a bit too far won't cause any lasting health issues. It can cause the hedgehog to not trust you (because it may think you hurt it, it felt pain). Just don't cut so often or so short. Their nails can be pretty long and that is fine.

FingerArt Master 4 to 6 is average for hogs. Good care and they should live at least 6. Jasmine is one of the oldest I've heard of. Perhaps the oldest recorded in captivity. I also had the oldest recorded Short Tailed Opossum. Just good care and proper high quality food. Food makes a big difference.

This question doesnt really have to do with cutting Hedgehog nails, but i thought id ask it on this video, I've heard you say before that freeze dried mealworms are good to get, but my local breeder says to NEVER get freeze dried mealworms, and to only get live mealworms. I was hoping for your input on this issue.
@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
Don't listen to your local breeder. I tried live insects with my hedgehogs. Most wouldn't go for them, especially crickets, just too fast and jumpy and got lost in their bedding. Live mealworms some would eat, but again, often got lost. Yes, you can put them in a bowl, but the inevitable happens and they get into the bedding. Then a week later you have beetles flying around! I have used freezedried mealworms mixed into my hedgehogs cat food for almost a decade! My 8 year old hedgehog has eaten freezedried mealworms with her cat food for 8 years! She is old and healthy! In fact, not a single hedgehog of mine has ever been ill or had any problems. So, based on my experience, it is perfectly fine to mix some freezedried mealworms in with their dry cat food.

@earthling1984
@earthling1984 8 жыл бұрын
Search my channel for "hedgehog care" and you will find lots of info about how to care for them! They aren't really that hard. Basically you need high quality cat food. I recommend Blue Buffalo or Royal Canin (no cheap junk food). I also feed freezedried mealworms (mix with the cat food) and some veggies/fruits from time to time. You need a large single level cage (they are clumsy and can fall, so a single level cage is needed). Something like a large guinea pig cage works. Use Apsen for bedding (NOT pine or cedar). And make sure their cage is around 77F (a small 25w red reptile heatlight works great for this. Overall, not too hard to care for.

@earthling1984
@earthling1984 7 жыл бұрын
You don't want to cut too far. Less is better. Cut more often just cut less. Don't want to cause blood and pain to your hedgehog. And yes, the more transparent part is the safe part to cut. There is a vein type thing inside that is more white looking and if that is cut they will feel pain and bleed.

@earthling1984
@earthling1984 5 жыл бұрын
Just cut them short enough that they aren't curling or causing any issues for the hedgehog. If you cut too far, they will bleed; and, perhaps cause your hedgehog pain. So, best to leave them a bit longer, rather than cut too short.

It's hard to really judge that. If you buy from a licensed breeder they may have some paperwork and such they can show you. But, best to do is just visit the breeders house. Look at their setup. Make sure all their hogs are nice and tame and all in clean cages. Make sure all look healthy and well cared for.
