Here are my tips and tricks to help you with cutting straight. You need to cut straight to prevent your blocks ending up too small, or wonky and out of square. Despite all your ironing attempts, and time spent on sewing straight, it’s essential to also have accurate cutting.

I always wondered how they made quilts before we had rulers like we do. I can't imagine having to draw with templates on everything I make! Massive respect to my Grandmother!!! Also, I don't think I would be able to cut fabric while sitting down. I have muscle memory for standing up while cutting and I think if I had to sit down, that would be a giant list of challenges!! For the first time I experienced what happens when your blades stick together and you accidentally put two in the cutter.....I really liked that fabric...grrrrrrr.....This was a fantastic video and one I have been waiting for while not knowing I was waiting for it! Thank you Karen!! I have learned sooooo much from you!!! :)

5th requirement for accurate cuts in my craft space - no cats on the cutting table. 😆Thanks so much for the clear and complete instructions, Karen. Although I've been sewing on and off since I was a teen and have made my own clothes and costumes, quilting is a different type of sewing and I am finding your instructional videos extremely helpful and useful. Also love that you are a fellow Canuck. Suggestion - making a playlist of the various instructional technique videos you have done. If it exists amongst your playlists, I couldn't find it. Hi! I am not a quilter and I have a negative relationship with my rotary cutter. But I do use it for crafting and sometimes for garment sewing . Yesterday I used the cutter for the first time after watching this tutorial. Your advice re posture, stance, arm motion and grip made my cutting much easier and physically more pleasant. Thank you for all your encouraging words across all your videos. Your clear, to-the-point presentations are a breath of fresh air. The number one tip that improved my cutting accuracy was putting a weight at the end when doing long cuts. No more shifting rulers. I've been doing that for awhile now, ever since I saw it on Jordan Fabrics. Yours is the only other video I've seen it done on. Great videos. Love your attention to small details and you get right to the point.

Hi Karen. Great how-to video. I bought weights a while ago for exercising. I noticed they started getting a little dusty so I put my 5 lb. weight to good use. I set it on my ruler and it saved my fabric many times from a slipping ruler. 🙂 Happy quilting ~ Arlene

Another thing that I've found in cutting things well is to remove any excess threads that may be hanging. Now and then someone in a fabric shop will clip and then tear the yardage. I don't care for that because it can pull the yardage off grain (and then you have to yank it back to true it--gah! hate that process) and this also leaves you with assorted dangling threads. Unless removed, these dangling threads always manage to get under your cutting tool which then distorts your cut. This is most annoying whether cutting for quilting or clothing or even crafts (bags, mats, etc.) when you depend upon accurate cutting to create the perfect completed item. Some fabrics are especially prone to raveling usually cheap stuff or specialty types like satin and taffeta. Sometimes it's a case of having to pre-wash before using it because the sizing gives you a headache (hate that) or something happened to it between the purchase and the sewing machine. (I laid a piece down one time to have a long look at it for planning purposes and the cat lost a hairball on it--glad cotton is so washable.) Washing even on the gentle cycle can still produce a mess of thread on the cut ends so be sure to get rid of them all before cutting.

If you don't have a hand weight you can use a bag of rice - that is what I use. It is enough weight to keep the ruler from shifting. This video is great - it helps so much to understand what works and why.

MISTAKE as I was cutting, ruler slipped and I am thankful it was an older blade or I probably would have cut my finger tip completely off! So on my 70th birthday I got a very bad cut that bled every where. very deep cut that should of had stitches, half a bottle of liquid bandage, ruined fabric, and no quilting for at least a week I learned my lesson, and will use all your tips and tricks.

OMG!! Gold!! I am just under 5' & my reach & arm strength are not enough to make good cuts. Your hint about using a weight on the end of the ruler is absolute gold!! I have only sewn EPP, all by hand, in the past so accurate cutting wasn't necessary; just gentle mushing here & there. I picked a simple pattern to make my 1st "real" quilt. BUT realized I had no idea how to make accurate cuts, sew straight seams & iron properly. BUT I have always believe time spent prepping on the back end make the front end so much easier. Your trifecta vids are wonderful! Short, simple & to the point. Lots of great examples. I have adjusted my stance & replaced the blade BUT the weight at the end of my long ruler is the VERY best. I have ALWAYS had issues with the ruler moving due to my height & short arms. I have placed sandpaper dots on the back & done everything I could think of to mitigate it BUT I still could not get it to work!! With the weight it works soooo easy!! Like you, I am using a 5 lb dumbell hand weight. It has the added benefit of being covered in a rubbery material to improve grip when working out, BUT that also keeps it from moving. It also makes it so much easier to match the markings on either end of my of my cutting mat. The weight is heavy enough to hold the end BUT light enough so I can tap the edge to fine tune it to the ruler lines. Just amazing!! THANK YOU!!!

I will add one tip I have found that works for me. Now, in my old age, I am not always seeing so well which line on the ruler I need to follow. When I am cutting many pieces in a row that all have to be the same size, I put a little piece (or 2, depending on size) of painters tape on the lines on the ruler that I need to follow. This prevents me from misreading the lines on those one or two squares that may be the last 2 pieces I have in that color! Saved me many times.

I never got the notification for the Jolly interview! Now I have something to listen to while I work on my quilt today, yay! Karen, thanks for all your tips! I used to cut on my dining room table until I figured out it had a sway across the length. I didn't know why my strips were not quite straight, and a quilt sandwich I had rolled onto wood planks and basted by hand didn't turn out very flat. Now I cut (and roll) on my granite countertop in the kitchen and all is well. (My sewing triangle is very large!) My last comment is about starching. I had never tried it before, but I love the improved accuracy. I have been making flying geese, and there is literally nothing to trim but the dog ears. I may not always do this because of the time involved, but it sure seems worthwhile.

Cutting mats can be refreshed by soaking it in 1/4 cup white vinegar per gallon of cool water for 15-20 minutes. I used my bathtub as it was my biggest space. However: don’t skimp on your rulers or your mat - save up the extra dollars and invest in quality from the beginning; it really will pay off, as Karen said.

I didn't have hand weights kept saying I was going to buy them .So I made them by putting pennies in a in a Poland spring water bottle filled to the top .They are what i use as weights when cutting fabric. It's something we all have pennies and empty water bottles mines have a new purpose .I make another size use the larger bottle for hand weights too . I just wanted to share my homemade weights .Have a blessed day

I just started using a hand weight on my ruler. This really helps for those long cuts. Look for them at garage sales or discount stores. And your tip about making a 'ledge' to sew straight was a good one, it really helps to butt up the edge of the fabric as you sew. Thanks!

Thank you, thank you for these foundational skills videos; I'm just getting underway learning to sew a flimsy. I thought to grab my low cost fabrics (thrift, left-over, old shirts, pillow cases) and try strip piecing "like on KZfaq". I tried the "8-at-a-time" HST. Wow! It's very easy to be all wonky. My cutting is sliding, my 1/4 seam is leaning, my fabric is puckering a little. Well, on the "not precious" fabric to play, that's fine. I'd be upset if this happened on my favorite print fabric. Here's to learning, and becoming skillful for quilts. :)

Yesterday I was making curtains for our van. For everyone else it’s a simple thing, for me a scary thing because I’m extremely inexperienced and I didn’t want to stuff up. I have seen you use your weight in previous videos and I had to dig mine out, those same weights I bought a year ago when we went into lockdown in Australia, thinking I can lose weight 😂 It was so so easy with the weight on my ruler. My husband thought I was very clever.

Great info, I always learn something from you! If you don’t have a five pound weight, look around your kitchen for a substitute. I use a 1.82 liter plastic bottle of tomato juice, works great. If I drink the tomato juice, I can fill the jug up with water. Happy quilting!

I discovered that I was much more frugal since I was purchasing fabrics. I was unwilling to pay $30 plus for those exercise weights shown in a few instructional videos. Since a gallon of water weighs 8 lbs., it stands to reason a half gallon would weigh four!! I therefore decided I would use that thirty bucks investing in additional fabrics and filled that half gallon (which previously contained milk) with water, reinforced the spout with a couple of layers of plastic wrap so it doesn't leak, and VOILA!! I got me a four pound weight for nothing at all. If you fear leaks, you can fill it with sand and it will be close enough to the four pounds.

I always use this tip n it reduces the worry of maintaining the ruler in straight position. And naturally increases the accuracy. Once u get into the habit of using weights, u cannot imagine cutting especially longer straps without the weights.
