Amazing! I've been waiting for a new video ! I really love this series you put together, so much great information. It is very interesting the different styles. I just started studying KSR which has given me an opportunity to really start training the techniques you are showing. My previous Sensei didn't want to hear any craziness that the hips should be driving the movement. Thanks again Sensei !

This is a very well explained video. This is similar to what the legendary boxer Jack Dempsey called falling step, since he sink and let his body weight falling going forward to generate power for his punch. This is also how I was taught to cut and thrust with 2 handed swords in general (not just Katana but also Longsword, Miao Dao, Tachi...) : Sink, lean forward and throw my bodyweight into the attacj but the difference is i don't take a step first like you do. I only step when my sword has already connected to the target, this makes the attack safer since the sword leading instead of the body

You can feel the power behind the moves. What strikes me is how little energy Paul is using. He could cut for hours not getting tired.

Thanks. That's a lot of details regarding the biomechanics, and a lot we miss when we're just blindly copying the teacher, like they teach traditionally. It surely helps one to develop their own set of skills and to adapt the technique to their physique, but the amount of training it takes to learn to put all this into a split-second cut is just too much if one would have to unlearn it afterwards to correct the flaws. Was wondering if you are considering making a detailed video about the biomechanics of the Katori signature cut, makiuchimen.

Very good point regarding traditional teachers teaching methods. I remember a tremendous amount of frustration trying to learn from traditional teachers. I think that’s a lot of my motivation for producing these KZfaq videos. I want to make it easier for the next generation of students. You still have to do the work but if you can get there faster by having a better understanding of the mechanics of the movement it makes it a lot easier.

Very nice, they have that concept in Tai Chi, Koto Ryu and Shoalin Kung Fu as well, but never thought you can also apply it to the katana and bo.

Absolutely beautiful teaching. I think you build up the knowledge perfectly, very slowly, step to step. Every thing that you say ads something into the continuous explanation, and that ends up in a super well transmitted idea! I love this video, and all the examples and steps are perfectly explained. From video to video it shows effort and improvement in the structures of the videos. Great work! I have only but gratitude for you!

Sorry I Forgot to make the next video in which I described continual stance pressure using gravity. I think I’m gonna make that video in relation to Aikido because the principle is most pliable to Aikido techniques.
