The leaving and coming back bit is very important, training them to sit and stay as you are leaving is ideal. My German Shepard’s would hate it when I went to work even if my husband was home. I just wish I could teach them to stay and not jump on me as I come back inside. Their real separation anxiety is between each other when we have to take one to the vet or groomers. Also, when my husband would take one dog on a walk and the other in the house would chew window sills and the door frame and bark and whine (which they are easing up on) and when they walk together the girl (younger) wants to walk right next to her big brother but her brother wants to lead (the girl has a more dominant personality though which is to be expected). One of the biggest issues we have is the girl constantly pulling on the leash to a point where she is basically choking herself. She just gets so excited and she is VERY muscular, a training collar has helped some (her brother never had that issue) anyone have any insight on how to combat this? Commands seldom work and treats are of no use when outside for a walk

I do have a chihuahua with separation anxiety even though it's better by now. In the begining was a nightmare. Now, the german shepherd takes the boss role as soon as I turn my back. She's always super sweet, never barks at anybody and let's everybody come in without a problem. My neighbors tell me she completely changes when I'm not home and really makes sure that nobody messes around while I'm out. I'm not that sure that's not her way to be anxious without having me around...

I loved this video. I definitely need to try some of this advice. I had a female that was a stray for I don't know how long then was picked up by a man that took her off the streets only to lock her in his garage during the winters of Chicago. I have tried exercising her un the morning before work and come home during lunch break for 45 minutes and come vack home 4 hours later. I always come home home at one piont with pee and poop in the basement, lower cabinets open, chewed up anything she gets into. Idk what else to do!

Thank you for this!! I have the best guy…1 year old found as stray but he cannot stand when I leave. Exercise isn’t possible because he’s heartworm+ :( so any tips on releasing the pent up energy since he can’t be exercised? We’re working every single day intensively with him. Really wanting him to flourish :)

We got a GSD of 15 months from a breeder and going away or put her in the crate at night is a big issue. Good instructions. Hopefully exercise and more strictness will do the trick. If not we now also know what to do. Thanks!

Do you know gow the GSD compares to the Labrador Retriever with respect to separation anxiety and the ability to be left alone for a few hours? We had a Yellow Lab and she did reasonably well even though she didn't much like it. We leave once a week for 4 or 5 hours. After her passing we are considering a GSD but are concerned about this issue.

I just got 2 German Shepherds puppies ( around 5 months old ) They’ve been outside their whole life now they are living in my apartment. They seem so scared and whine constantly They don’t want snacks or petting. How do I help them feel safe so I can train them asap Especially potty training

This sounds like my situation exactly except the petting part. I got my one puppy from an Amish guy and he was 3 ish months when I picked him up. Was used to living outside in a pen with his brothers up until then and boy has it been a struggle. He is so smart and catches on quick to what you want him to do but he gets distracted by city noises and other people/animals so easily. And doorways/stairs are scary to him right now. Crate training has also been rough, he loves chilling in the crate but he wants you to be around him or he'll cry and get out and start peeing himself. This is only day 3 but he's already gotten used to pavement/sidewalls (I know, crazy right, he was terrified of them day one), he walks by my side and might take a glance at another dog in the distance but keeps it moving. The BIGGEST thing I had to get through my head was that these puppies need leaders, they need to feel like they are safe and like literally Jesus take the wheel feeling. I fed into his need for attention and kept using phrases like "its ok" and speaking softly to him, letting him lead on walks. And now I make sure my statements are upbeat and firm, I stop when he gets ahead of me in walks and make sure my head is pointing to where I want us to go. Constant constant positive reinforcement, yes and good job will becomes the majority of your vocabulary lol. Strict feeding times because I'm assuming your puppies were also just given a big bucket of food to munch on all day. And a lot of walks! I learned the hard way day 3 (today) that I have not been tiring him out enough and he was crying for my attention all day, like a lost child that didn't know what he wanted. And when I left for an hour he chewed up his bed which is a telltale sign of anxiety forming. So I got his ass up and ran around for 30 mins 😂 and now he's happy and knocked out. Oh and lots of mental stimulation. KZfaq is a good source for that if you want some videos
