Warning
Take your child for a medical checkup if their tantrums are increasing or intensifying, especially if they are accompanied by nightmares, stomachaches, or headaches.
Step 1: Reduce the chances of an outburst
Reduce the chances of your child having an outburst in the first place by making sure they're rested and well fed before setting out.
Step 2: Set a good example
Set a good example for your children by keeping a lid on your own temper or you’ll send the message that angry outbursts are okay.
Step 3: Set expectations
Set expectations beforehand so children know going in what they will and will not be getting and doing. If they know what to expect, they're less inclined to go bonkers.
Step 4: Cut it off at the pass
Try to stop temper tantrums before they start. Offer a snack; start a silly game when they start to squirm with boredom; give them a little task to focus on if they're becoming overwhelmed with sights and sounds.
Step 5: Remain calm
No luck in thwarting a major meltdown? Don't make the situation worse by having your own. Tell your child in a soothing voice that you're sorry they're upset but they need to calm down.
Step 6: Respond according to their age
Your next move depends on your child's age. If they're three or under, distracting them often works. If it doesn't, or if they're older than three, remove them from the store - even if you have to abandon your shopping cart - and give them a time-out.
Tip
Never give in! You don't want to teach your children that pitching a fit is an efficient way to get what they want.
Step 7: Explain consequences
Explain the consequences of them continuing the tantrum, like you'll take them home or they won't get something you promised them.
Tip
Make sure other family members don't undermine you by waiving the punishment.
Step 8: Be soothing
Speak softly and tell them that you understand their frustration. If they'll let you, hold them. Don’t expect them to calm immediately, but follow through with the punishment if they continue to pitch a fit.
Step 9: Talk things over
Later, once your child is totally calm, explain that you'll no longer be able to take them shopping with you if they misbehave. Then hug it out; it's important that your child know that even if you don't like their behavior, you still love them.
Did You Know?
Thirteen percent of children between ages two and four have one or two temper tantrums a day.

All my mom and dad had to do was offer my sis and I a glare, a "Just wait until we get home", an awkward silence as we drove home, instructions to go pick a belt from the closet, whooping, an explanation of that whooping and an "I love you". Never screamed in a grocery store again.

7rode123 In your standards, probably. In mine, it is discipline. Abuse to me is beating up a child for no other reason but anger and hate. My parents didn't beat me up, just whopped my butt. lol

Same here. There was no calmly explaining the very thing that she already explained to me before we walked in! It only took one time for me to try that "falling-out-in-the-store" thing and after she asked me if I remembered what she told me in the car and I still acted crazy, she took me to the bathroom and whooped my tail (no, she didn't abuse me, but she shocked me into reality). Let's just say that anytime she asked me if I "want to take this to the bathroom" or told me to "wait until I get home" after that, I STOPPED acting like a fool and was like,"No mother....I'm ok now" LOL! So while I applaud them for some of the tactics in this video (like making sure they're fed and that you explain the rules beforehand), I don't think it's realistic to ask a mother who probably has A LOT to accomplish in a day to take 12 steps to get their child to behave when you only have to take 2. The day I tried my mother, I learned really fast that tantrums were not tolerated and that there was NO NEGOTIAION in that matter. When my mother tells me to do something, I better do it without hesitation and if I didn't, there would be consequences. But you and I come from a different culture than some "other people" (*wink*) so this is why we see them acting out and cursing out their parents at 14 and we don't.

First of all, just because they dont go shopping doesnt mean they have to stay home alone. Second, the person on the video is acting like shopping is fun for the kid, "tell them that next time they wont be allowed to go to the store" why do you think the kid is having a tantrum? Its most likely because they dont WANT to go shopping, so why tell them that tantruming will keep them from having to go next time? Youre just rewarding the behavior. And then in the event that they cant stay home, for example, if they definitely have no one to watch the kid, the kid will have to go, even though they were told last time they tantrumed that they wouldnt have to go. Now they will just have an even bigger tantrum.

Putting your child in the seat, and letting them play games on your iPad may be the best solution. If they're on the spectrum, maybe also set a timer for how long the actual trip should take, and have a "challenge" mode on your game if the line is too long. Also, shades, earplugs/earbuds, and possibly a hooded jacket or vest may also do wonders. But possibly most important, is the eating and sleeping beforehand, and "what to expect" debriefing.

I like this method. I've used it before(several times)-if you're firm, it works! If you're a softie, it doesn't lol. All of you who are like "Just don't raise brats!" and "Beat the s*** out of them" disappoint me a bit. Not like you're a "bad person", but it's disappointing that people think that if your child ever misbehaves, you're not a good parent or that the only solution is to hit them without trying anything else first.

Babysitters don't do what the parents say on rules for the kids now a days, They make it a fun experience even for the ones who act up smh, when I was growing up if my parents told my babysitter not to let me do anything since I was grounded then they followed orders, after all that's what you are paying them for, to follow parents house rules and orders for their child, not be their fun friend, kids need friends with kids, not adults.

I never had a temper tantrum because my mum would hit us. She used the belt on us if we scream or ran around. We knew when we went into a store we could ask for anything, if we had to go to the bathroom we could only ask if we were about to pass by it, and we couldn't leave the cart. Because of this I became a responsible adult while I see other children that were allowed to have their tantrum become so irresponsible. :/

WoW Fantastic little video, certainly entertaining but also getting the message across. I remember our kids having tantrums but we coped okay and came out quite well. Yes it's embarrassing at the time but a slap up the side of the head worked just as well. Its called the short sharp shock method! lol Yes I'm kidding of course. There is always a right and a wrong approach but times also change as do the laws. So another way would be to buy them a new toy & bribe the little darlings. Head on over to get your toys online

@96thatcrazygamer My mom never spanked me and I didn't have any public tantrums over the age of three.Any tantrum I did have was because I was tired, hungry, or just a baby. And she certainly didn't "beat the crap" out of me either.Just because different parents do different things to discipline their children does not mean that the parents are giving "special treatment".One more thing- do you really think any kid that has a temper tantrum is a brat?Or just older kids? Thanks for answering! :-)

@Jeddie256 Psychologists can't help autistic children. It's not a mental disorder that can be fixed or cured with treatment. It's neurological and effects communication and sensory input. I still say there should be some kind of disclaimer stating if your child has any developmental concerns these steps may not apply...

@yaddleskidaddle I'd agree with the soap.. at least in my case. I actually enjoyed it. Kids are a lot tougher than they're given credit for and they're very intelligent and quite immature. The interesting thing about them is that the younger kids, who have not grown accustomed to any one pattern in life, actually crave physical discipline and will want to be around you more if you can show them both friendship/love and that discipline.

No body teach you how to be a parent and any advise is always helpful. I went trough these for years and I always took my kids to the bathroom to cool them down with water in their heads and give them hugs. This help a lot but when it was impossible I would;d just leave the store. Is nothing more annoying than to listen to a tantrum child. You have to be considered to others.

While I've found many different methods work to some extent, often the best and most commonly successful way to deal with this problem is to tell them that a fit will not get them what they want and to go right ahead and keep up the tantrum, it's OK with you but it will keep them from getting anything for that much longer. They will of course continue the screaming and telling, but you'll be amazed how quickly, and I've never had it continue for more than 30 seconds or so, tops, until, as they notice your complete indifference to how they're acting and realize the particularly uncomfortable and tiring fit throwing really isn't bothering you and isn't going to sway your giving in to them, most times they will stop abruptly and immediately divert their attention to something else altogether and that episode is over. Subsequent episodes, if any, will stop quicker and quicker, and if you reward the child when he/she stops, even if just a verbal praise at their stopping and engage them in something interesting, and/or some small great they weren't even expecting or throwing the fit in order to get in the first place, you'll probably find that this occurs less and less and rarely becomes a common form of manipulation of you on their part, which it allowed, never works to your advantage, nor to the child's in the long run. Try it , it's the easiest and most effective way I've found to deal with this issue.

I agree completely about not giving in to the child's temper tantrum, my little cousin Maria had the worst case of the "Gimmies" over my toy horse Rain from the movie Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron. It may of been almost four years ago, but I still feel good that I didnt give in when Maria always asked me, "Can I have Rain?" She was only four years old and now she is seven years old. Instead of asking me if she can have Rain, she now wants to touch her even though I personally dont trust Maria with Rain since she was acting like such a spoiled brat over the fact that she wanted Rain

My dad would yell at me then I would cry and he would yell at me to stop crying or he would give me something to cry about. Then my mom would step in, say in a firm but kind voice for me to go to do something else. After she calmed my dad down from HIS tantrum, she dried my tears and explain that I misbehaved or either that what I did was not my fault or an accident.
