You made it clear. Cheap customers treat you just like that: Cheap and worthless. And they are the exact same group of customers that complain, cherry-pick everything, demand absurd requests AND in the end will badmouth you anyways. Steer away from them like the plague from day one. You'll be happy you did.

I'd say Brian is right about 15-20% of the clients are chiselers. I always give a real high quote for them knowing I won't have to deal with it any longer. Had a client for ten years, always adding things but didn't want to pay for it, of course he would brag about how much money he has, seems like the people who can afford it are the cheapest, not all, but alot

I categorize my customers into 3 Groups: A: Customer's where I do everything. B: Customer"s who you can up-sell to. C. Customer's who only want their lawn cut. (Bargain Shoppers) I try to fill my schedule with A's and B's and then cut the C's loose as I get busy.

Bri I don’t do lawn care. Just plowing and during my route, there are always residentials that flag me down. This one guy offers me $50 to clean out a foot of snow from the front of 2 garages and a sidewalk 15x80 approx. i said absolutely not. I’ll do it for 150. Here he is standing in his garage with an old caprice classic running with 12” of snow blocking him in. He goes cmon, you can just do it. Two swipes and you’re done. I said sir it’s not gonna be two swipes. Listen I can’t go back and forth. I have a lot more clients I have to see that I have contracts with and need to get done. So you want me to do this? No answer. I said you have 3 options, you go back in your house and call it a night. You wait right here in the freezing cold for 3 kids to come by “if they come by” and then have them do it and hope they charge you 50, which they won’t because this will take them an hour, and they would most likely ask for 100-120. Or option 3 is have me do it right now for 150 and I’m done in 10-15 min. Your call. He hesitated. I said goodbye. I gotta go! Now, if I was done with my route, I prolly woulda went to 100. Maybe haggle another few bucks. But it was the Bombogenesis storm and I needed to bounce. Lol

Last week I got a new customer, she said her previous lawn care guy wasnt doing a good job, so i went and met with her and told her 45$ now it is almost an acre, i usually do between 40 and 60 for an acre depending on the difficulty, if it's just an open yard I'll go 45...well hers is really pretty simple couple small trees with small tree beds in the back and a bed all around the house. So I said to her 45$...well she said, my old landscaper did it for 35, and I told her well 45 is my rate and that's just what it is, then she said "i do have one more guy coming to give an estimate, I'll let you know" well she called me the next day and said "you're it, you're my guy" so curious I asked her how much did the other guy bid, she said 60$ I smiled and said I told ya I'd be lower.

I troubleshoot, upgrade, repair computers as well as do consultation on a new computer for customers. I have a set fee. my favorite line, " Bestbuy can do it for X price." my response? " go for it!" I never bash other companies about how they do there work. Customers needs to realize that there are many repair shops and techs but only a TRUE handful of really, really good techs that know how to do there job. Personally, I have experienced some of the worst auto mechanics and some of the best auto mechanics. the bad auto mechanics far out weigh the good ones. and the same goes for just about any company. A lot of bad apples but eventually you find a good one!

totally agree. @ 4:02 you start to explain about the behind the scene costs that customers don't see. when I watch " how it's made" TV series, me and my wife both agree that it does take time and money to produce a quality product or to provide excellent services for a customer. People need to realize that Quality and excellence from a company comes with a cost and because of that, they deserve to be paid well. It's the old cliche, " you get what you pay for". I have personally seen both sides. A bad company and a good company. As long as the company can maintain a quality service and/or product people will continue to use them.

He told me how much money the job was worth, and how much time he thought it would take me. Because the property is close by and out f shear curiosity of his boldness I drove over to view the property and I did confirm it would’ve cost him more than double that. I tried to explain, although a waste of my time, that I am thorough on my cleanups. I have to compensate my time, equipment, & insurance.

My business is in the suburbs with a mix of property models and owners. I’ve seen there are 3 mowing options, do it yourself, get the kid next door or the guy with the mower in the trunk of his/her Camry, or hire the pros. Prices depend on what your business is, I cant be the push mower Camry guy, but because my business is set up as a streamlined solo business I do find myself as the lower priced professional service, so I guess I may have taken some of the “budget minded” accounts from larger businesses. I have walked the line between being fair to my business and greed. Knowing that my overhead is lower and that my quality is the same as the bigger commercial companies I am tempted to price the same as my more debt burdened competitors. Instead I choose to offer quality work at less cost to the homeowner, my margins are still fantastic and my customers appreciate my concern for their money. Plenty of work for all, set your policies and stick with them.

I don't go back and forth. I tell them one time and I'll explain what they get for that. I say you have my number. Too many lawns out there to be shortchanged. Depending on the neighborhood, I charge between 50 and 60 an hour

I have a $25,000 D21d walker mower with a floating deck and an actuated grass catcher , $300.00 husqvarna rear wheel drive bagging / mulching mower , $200.00 husqvarna hand held blower , $160.00 stihl weed trimmer , ( I can rent a bush trimmer ) AND a $300.00 stihl chainsaw , 14' drop-gate trailer and a shitty F150..............If you're a customer , you need to think about what these guys have INVESTED , if you're a contractor ,collaborate with the competition and keep prices up.

I charge an extra 15 dollars for all one time cuts. Maybe it's crazy but it seems to eliminate the cheap customers.
@joes.7536
@joes.7536 5 жыл бұрын
That's legit. One time cuts take longer. I'm not in the business anymore but I used to get the customer who wanted to pay for a one-time cut primarily to get there over grown edging taken care of. I fell for it my first season a few times. Then I wised up. This is your cup price. you're edging is overgrown so that will be an additional $40 if you want that done.

Brian unless these are just examples your prices are way...way to low. Think about this, the price to fill up a truck is around 60-65 dollars. So if you charge 20.00 per cut. That's three cuts just to put gas in your tank! That's not including maintenance, Insurance etc.. I'm sure you get my point.

I always tell them that it's not fair to my current customer who pay regular price and have been with me a while. Trust me, what you do for one customer in the same development will spread to your customers. You can lose your current customers like that. Stay away. Or quote a price higher than your current customers say. Then give them a discount, and it ends up with same price as current customers. If not walk away!

The best ways to deal with lowballers are to ignore / blacklist them or decked them in the face if they came to you and lowball last minute after agreeing to pay full price beforehand.

Here in northern IL. My cheapest lawn cut is $50 (45min work). My most expensive is $650/cut. Makes me laugh when you guys talk about $18 lawns. But I understand every state (and comes down to every subdivision/corner of a town) really, has its own price.

How can I put a stop to low balling in my retail fireworks tent or Civil War Sutlers tent? In these cases, they’re physically present and some get verbally aggressive and won’t listen to reason or the spiel on value or how low my prices already are.

Adapt this to lawn care as needed, but the best response for me to the "I gotta guy who can do it for..." shtick is: "I know that guy, he doesn't have insurance or a license and if you hire him you'll just be helping him feed his habit. I charge more because I'm an actual business, do a proper job and haven't collected a settlement from anyone's homeowner's insurance for falling off a ladder and suing them. Before you make a decision on who to hire drive down by the BP on Wilkinson and take a look at what kind of work he does."
