Personally did a keyboard piece in church. Missed a few spots not because of lack of practice but felt the heart started speeding up. For years performed with a band. As long as you know there are half-dozen people on your side, you lose your fear. Playing becomes a routine even when pieces are difficult. When you're doing solo the first thing is do not go to a piano and start right away. You can say a few words about the music first. Take a deep breath, even wait a few minutes to calm down.

What do you do if you forget how to play the piano half way through?

My hands shake when I try to play in front of people. Not just a crowd. One person. I have no idea how I'm going to deal with this. I'll always think I suck. That's probably a big problem.

This video's advice is squarely on point, and if you can incorporate it, you will amaze yourself. Mr. Estrin is correct when he says you must "embrace the audience". Unless people are being evil on purpose, the audience is on your side! They want you to win! If you feel good, then they feel good. If you feel bad, likewise, they'll feel bad. Stop being your own worst critic and start becoming your own biggest fan. Practice helps piano playing, but Mr. Estrin is so correct when he mentions attitude and visualization. Help your self-esteem by actually liking yourself and encouraging yourself. Don't worry about the mistakes, worry about how you feel and what you're projecting. Before you dismiss this, know that I suffer from the same things you've described and it's tough for me too. But that doesn't mean that the advice is ineffective - it's up to us to use it!

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I started playing in front of an audience at age 50 after years as a bedroom guitarist. I accidently stumbled on a strategy that got me inadvertently playing in front of people and slowly but surely I had a mindset change. Its still a battle at times but I regularly gig and play at open mics now. Good advice from Nelson though. Don't give up hope! Being a public speaker and a musician are NOT the same thing and don't go hand in hand. I'm working on communicating the details of my journey. I don't think we are the only ones who shake and think we suck

After performing in public I found that afterwards I have a buzz and exhaustion as when I play in public I give my all. I started by playing at my local Church so I was playing before family and friends then I moved on to play in the local Hall which seated 400 people. The most I have played for was 1500 people

Same!! I sing good only when I'm alone or if I do it spontaneously. Is someone asks me to sing then I lose all the confidence I have

omg I feel exactly the same as u, I'm reading comments hopefully there would be ppl relatable like me so I wouldn't feel like I'm the only one who's nervous and always messes up heaps on piano performance day but plays perfectly by myself alone lmao

I'm a 30 year old complete newbie (started xmas 2015) and my tutor teams up with other local tutors and twice a year they arrange a performance for students of all ages and grades - my son and niece (8 & 9 years old) and I attended our first this weekend - the kids did fine but I had a terrible dose of stage fright which took control of my hands I was physically shaking so much I couldn't complete either of my short pieces. It didn't help that I had never played on a digital piano and the sound was fed straight to the speakers so it 'felt' wrong I have to do this again at christmas 😂

Don't worry, even if u make mistakes, feel free to make them, if u search these videos up I bet there r gonna who r just like u. when ppl hear u play a mistake, after a long time, they might as well forget and think about something else anyways.

I have had the same dream of not knowing all the music. As a guitarist. Also bad dreams where I need to at a performance in ten minutes but I already am late to set up gear , do a sound check and rehearse. So basically I am too late to do the performance but not late enough to where it has started yet. Very troublesome, Then I wake up and am relieved. It's funny but not when it's happening.
