I love that you point out that “no” and “stop” are SURVIVAL words and that kids should know them. I hear and read all the time about how we shouldn’t use “no” .. but it is important for them to know and understand it. Thank you for sharing all this advice!

It's 11:51pm and I'm a mom of a 6 year old who is non-verbal and has autism. I have just gotten my son to go to bed. Often I try to redirect him to something else. Today that didn't work. I tried to comfort him with words and hugs. That didn't work. I tried to ignore it that didn't work. Today was really hard. Nothing seemed to work and I couldn't figure out what was bothering him. I feel for all parents in my situation. It's not easy. In the end today, I didn't figure it out and eventually my son tired himself out from all his screaming and fell asleep. Now I'm just watching videos to better educate myself on how I can reduce his aggression and hitting.

Am not even talking about my patients ( their siblings) I am watching videos on how to deal with a 4 year old biting, throwing my waters, and even trying to hurt my patient ( the sister) . My son is 6 and Autistic, he is partially verbal and leaning new words everyday. However he gets angry and starts hitting ONLY when he is tired and wants an object really bad. He recently has shown an interest in taking pictures...and wanted to play with my really expensive camera I use for work. I obviously couldn't let him play with it and we were trying to find him an alternate camera he could use but he got fixated and spun out of control and started hitting me because I wouldn't let him have the expensive camera. Once they spiral into screaming and hitting....is there no way to bring them back down? My wife took him out of the room and finally got him to lay down....but MAN was he angry.

Hi! I work as an LSA with autistic kids and I'm just trying to figure this out myself. What I've found works is firstly giving them some space, then quite often they'll seek comfort and you can get closer. It's really helpful if they have any objects that can act as comfort objects, like a blanket or a specific teddy! Other than that they usually just need to be soothed and have the safe space to feel their emotions. Good luck to you!

Actually I've been told by my mom that when I don't give my baby 2yo a proper time which he expects from me then he started to GE frustrated and annoying. Since I'm living in UAE there's no big family only your own so here's only me n and my husband here whether I'm my homeland there were so many people around my son he never hit me that time when I was there but when I came back he doesn't like to. Me to go anywhere nor in kitchen to do some work not even allowe me to go to washroom. And he just wants me to get him play with him or give him my all. I tried so many things to let his attention on learning toys or names or some words but as he's very hyper active Mashallah he doesn't even listen to me really 😔

Kids shows are way less violent then stuff I watched between 1998 and 2005 and my reaction to not getting my way wasn't to hit other kids or an adult. The child needs a better outlet for being upset and know if they continue this means to release anger there will be consequences, just like if an adult starts attacking other adults they can go to prison or other things

I’m not so sure visualizing fighting in kids shows necessarily results in the child mirroring that behavior. This has been a common misconception that’s often suggested as a cause of bad behavior. Kids shows today are significantly less violent than they used to be. I think you nailed many of the other causes however.

I'm a support worker for a man with autism and mental illness, and whenever he becomes aggressive he speaks of transformers (the movie) and begins destroying things as if he were one. It may be due to past experiences or just simply frustration, but he definitely takes on and tries to embody the various movies/songs he's seen/heard. This may be different for each person with Autism, hence the spectrum, but I 100% agree with what is said in the video. 🖤

No one even knows why he really hits because he says the most ridiculous reasons like the sky is cloudy, or his marker dried out, or sometimes there is no reason and he ignores you when you ask him. He has had all his stuff taken away because everyday before school his mom says "no hitting today and you get your stuff back and a surprise!" Samarpita Choudhury thank you for your comment. Kayla suggests ignoring the behavior when it's for attention and distracting him with another activity. He is probably frustrated by not being able to communicate. If you have not already, contact your doctor and your local state agency (if in the US) for a developmental evaluation for behavior and communication. You can google "early intervention evaluation" and your state. Hope this helps. Feel free to email therapy@walkietalkie.education

I would explore emotion coaching. The suggestion of moving away is nothing more than isolating the child and removing much needed connection. It's giving the child the message that you love is conditional. Instead, keep calm, as gently as possible yet still effectively hold the child's arms by their sides and verbalize for them, 'you must be so mad, I won't let you hit. Hitting hurts bodies. Show me how mad you are, stomp your feet. Now, breathe with me. You are safe, you can handle this.
