you should be holding the fans so they don't spin and generate electricity.

Careful with blowing high volume of air directly to the PC fans. You could damage it or break it.

@@ninjatall15 He is right, the fan has an electric motor, when you blow the blades forcing them to move at high speeds it becomes and electrical generator, you are basically creating an inverted voltage where it is not expected or designed to manage, with unpredictable effects in the electrical engine and all the way downstream. If the induced rotation is high speed failures are common.

Came to say the same thing. Hold the blades so they dont spin when you use the blower, then carefully clean the blades individually with a soft toothbrush and a light amount of rubbing alcohol for tough stuck on dust

When re-pasting GPUs, it's best to manually spread a thin layer of thermal paste across the entire die. The silicon die makes direct contact with the heatsink, so if you miss even a tiny corner because the paste didn't spread across the entire die evenly, you can get weird performance issues, crashes, or you could even end up killing your card
@RevDrCCoonansr
@RevDrCCoonansr Жыл бұрын
This is why Thermal Grizzly gives you a spreader with it's pastes. I would suggest an old credit card or guitar pick if you do not have anything else to spread. You can use your fingers in a pinch, however I do not recommend it. Some pastes are very toxic. Got some on my hand without knowing, it sat for a day and I ended up scratching a hole in my hand itching it.

It's a great guide, and I love that cleaning and maintaining your hardware is getting a spotlight and people can learn that it has benefits that go beyond cleanliness to keep your computers well maintained. Just a note on the fans: As every electric motor can also function as a generator, spinning your fans with compressed air might(!) induce voltage back into the fan header that can(!) damage your mainboard. Personally, I like to unplug them or (if that's not possible) stick something like a toothpick between the blades so that they dont spin from the air. It's just a precaution, as most of the time, nothing will happen. That's why there will be a lot of people telling you that they've cleaned hundreds of fans like this and nothing ever happened. Same thing as with ESD, most of the time nothing happens, but when it does, it sucks to replace a broken GPU, CPU or mainboard. So keep that in mind, especially if you are cleaning someone else's electronics 👍

Hey love all your vids, but I think this one might cause issues for some people, it's usually a one in a million chance but best practice is holding the fans when using a blower, it's bad for the electric motors and also when repasting gpus it's best to be on the safe side and apply thin paste all over the die, it's different to an IHS where a dot or line is great. Sorry if this sounded rude, love all that you do have a great week :)

Using an actual air compressor is fine if you live in a dry area, if you do not, make sure to keep the compressor in a dry, room temperature space when using and it is just fine. No moisture. If you are still worried, place a filter over the air intake and use a fine nozzle.

it should be mentioned that you should check if you have a warranty still one your GPU since taking it apart will void it . Also you should not ramp up the fans with Air like that unless you know for sure that it will not generate voltage and back feed it to the PC not all do but some can, better to be safe it doesn't take much extra time to unplug them or block from spinning as you blow them out.

Nice video! When you started working on the motherboard, I thought it looked familiar. It's the exact same one I currently have in my Ryzen 5 3600 build that I built back in 2020 to replace my 10+ year old AMD Phenom II X3 720BE. Still holds up nice 3 years after the release of the 3600. As for the one fan, don't feel bad. The B450M DS3H motherboard only has one case fan header, so you would have to use a splitter which is something I need to do, but I've been running with just 1 exhaust fan for 2 years, so I guess it's not TOO bad, right? :)

Not all fans inject current back into the card when spun manually. Besides these components have circuitry to prevent that from damaging them. Of all the people that keep propagating this myth that it will kill components can't show a single example in recent history of it happening. Regardless, it's stupid easy to stop the fan to prevent over spinning the bearing anyways... so mind as well.

I was interested in the sponsor product until I found out it was battery operated and doesn't use removable batteries like 18650s. I would much rather plug the thing in to a wall and deal with a cord than ever have to deal with a dead internal battery. I got a battery powered drill+driver and the battery pack died before I used the thing more than a couple dozen times. Such a waste of materials when I should have just gotten a wall powered one. At least with the drill, it's a battery pack that can be replaced easily enough.

@Misterz3r0
@Misterz3r0 Жыл бұрын
You really shouldn't be using any brushes or plastic parts when cleaning your PC especially if attached to a blower. Because plastic is an insulator, charge builds up on the plastic whether air is being blown or sucked through the nozzle. And if the nozzle or brush attached to the nozzle touches an electrical component, and electrostatic discharge can occur killing the electronic component. There is plastic that is ESD safe and there are companies that make ESD safe vacuums and blowers that use that type of plastic, but that doesn't appear to be the case with dust blower being used in the video. If you do use an non-ESD safe blower, like the one in the video, just make sure the nozzle is kept a safe distance away from the computer parts and never use the attached brush. Natural bristle brushes or flux brushes can be used on electronic components for hard to remove stubborn dust that isn't responsive to blown air.
