memory slips are a common problem for me when I perform. It usually happens when I end up playing a wrong note, which causes me to mess up my fingering. I rely too much on finger memory sometimes and since all pianos are kinda different, it won’t be the same as playing my piano at home, so it causes me to mess up more. To counter this i’ve been trying to actually learn the notes of certain sections so I have places to go back to if I mess up very badly. Very helpful tips I will definitely try implement them when it happens again!

Memory slips are definitely scary! For me, when I think about individual notes, I seem to have a higher chance of messing up, but when I stop thinking about each note and kind of "clear my mind," that tends to help. Having spots you can "go back to" might be a good idea, so that if you have a memory slip, you have checkpoints you can return to. Good luck, BlissingJoy! If it happens, I usually try to proceed to the closest(as possible) measure that I can remember, even if it can sound a bit strange. I think fugues are some of those prone to such instances. In some works, such as Kapustin and the Rachmaninoff second sonata, it can still be more challenging.

Fugues can definitely be memory slip-inducing culprits. For me, when there aren't many clear-cut, safe "home" chords/harmonies, that can increase the chances of memory slips. Be sure to sub for more, and thanks for your support! 😄

@Charlie Albright Sometimes I proceed to the nearest phrase or sub-phrase as possible. For classical musicians, at least, when there are so many jazz rhythms and harmonies, as in Kapustin's works, it seems more difficult to find the next spot. 20th-century works or later pose more threat to memory lapses. Also, when composers constantly repeat nearly identical material with so small variations, it takes more time to memorize, as in the case of some movements from Bartok's Out of Doors. That is partly why it is important to analyze the music and practice hands separately.

I've been playing for 15 month now and can play some pieces quite well but only perfectly maybe 20 percent of the time. Drives me crazy. There is a slight pause, a wrong note or "what chord is next???". I record myself and work on correcting the weak areas, sometimes it is fingering I have to make a mental note of. So frustrating but I keep going. I practice almost daily and love it. (grade 3/4, and age 75)
