People think that we only defend against an atttack, but actually my Aikido instructor always tells me not to wait for the uke's attack but go in as soon as there is the slightest hint of there being an assault. Your video confirms this. WELL DONE

My instructor says the same thing! Go check out some of O'sensi's demonstration films, he engagues uke before the attack is even viable

Same here it's all about anticipation.....and people still think that Aikido is a passive art because we only defend.

@@MrMattias87 because they think that defense means waiting to be attacked. But even I know, and I'm not yet training aikido (but will start soon) that sometimes defending means attacking first. If you can see that you will be attacked, and what I can tell by these videos, you can recognize the threat when it is comming at you.

As always, good advice. One thing my sensei used to say was "Don't just stand there and think you're going to block a punch and then put some guy in a wrist lock. That's not Aikido. The first thing you need to do is MOVE. Irimi to the left or right, but don't just stand there. That way, if your technique fails, the punch still misses." Easier said than done, of course!

Never been in a physical fight since my time at school. I guess my height and build was just a deterrent to most people. Now I'm getting older, I have noticed drunks on a weekend are starting to target me - normally vomiting up anti black racist tripe. I will practice some of these techniques simply to ward off potential assault.

Don't use these. They won't work. Take boxing, mma or really any other defense class. Aikido is the least effective out there. Hell just getting in fights would be better teaching

@@dakotablount251 wdym i do aikido and no one can attack me and i have never learnt anything from a fight before i actually winned my first fight just bc aikido like years ago im 16 rn tho so yeah i still have a long way to go but it works for me at the moment also the pain that my teacher made me go through aswell like at my first day i had to do like 60 pushups which was kinda painfull but i was doin it slow so yea

Another thing: it will be EXTREMELY helpful if such a video (or even MOST of your videos) get to be seen from above!! Like, to hook a GoPro onto a tree brunch in the park. Slo-mo we could always get from KZfaq s menu but an above view is absolutely crucial to correctly understanding most strategies, the eye doesn’t quite get it from a horizontal view. Cheers!

In firearms world to control breathing is also called sometimes "BOX BREATHING" . Box Breathing is where one can imagine a four corner box . And in between the the corners are intervals of seconds . So At each imaginary corner one will inhale and then at the next corner in the rotation, one will exhale . The space between lets say 4 seconds. Is the time in between the inhale and the exhale . Or the imaginary line between each corner = seconds . And corners = either inhale or exhale . Also remember, at least with this system to inhale trough the nose and exhale out of the mouth . This allows one to expel the maximum amount of Carbon dioxide as possible . The following may sound funny at first . However it is a great practice . Key word being "PRACTICE " YES practice Breathing . Breathing like this can become second nature like anything else . Such as the muscle memory you have unwittingly developed by putting your wallet away . And since Breathing uses muscles as well as the mind we can develope our muscle memory in this aspect as well . More oxygen brings clearer thinking and vision of your surrounding . God Bless

totally agree! sure takes alot of practice but the idea of shielding first and advancing right after is really sound. i can see how this would allow the person to control the situation in the least violent way. Its a pity the dojo i go to rarely let us practise defences to punches aimed at the face

This is very nice but I feel that you should give people a few hints on how to slide correctly and efficiently to the side or behind the opponent. Like, your body should always face them centrally once you pass to their side, or face same direction as them once behind them (for kiri otoshi or other). I say this because I find the smooth, quick passage difficult (or it is hard for me only?) and it’s one thing that can be practiced even without a partner. Thanks!

They demonstrated combo punches in the end but the idea is to deflect and enter/irimi before the combo builds up.
