The Song Dynasty also included units of armored swordsmen with long two handed swords in the ranks of pikes, halberds, archers, and crossbowmen. These swordsmen could be used to cut down cavalry and countercharge a cavalry unit with its momentum stalled.

I put my range units on the front then quickly putting them on my flanks when the enemies are near. I'm playing as England right now, I've got a ton of spearmen, archers and artillery guarding the river crossings near Cairo and Alexandria. Then I've just used my naval supremacy to attack their lightly defended coastal cities which I just sack with no intent of holding. It's a good way to make them lose that massive reserve of gold that they start with.

Put archers in loose formation with pike in back to prevent a charge then wither away their horse archers..... that's how I win in tw. Inorder for this to work you have 2 have 2 times their army.... I just dwindle their numbers with seige fights where they are the attackers......

@@mysteryjunkie9808 Not really fair to make that comparison. I don’t wanna sound harsh, but it is true that the Dothraki are kind of stupid when it comes to warfare and the Mongols are a little bit more. How should I say? Higher IQ. Dothraki are basically “LEROYYYYYYYY JENNNNKIIIIIINS!” Literally all the Dothraki do, it even mentions in lore, they just blindly charge into pikes and see what the fuck happens. You could say dragons, but you just focus all the arrow fire in the dragon to stave it off and use those miniature scorpions, too, for keeping it at bay. And I’m also gonna go off on a limb here, but the dragon breathing fire is gonna be counter productive because now you have a wall of fire and the Dothraki……cannot go through the wall of flames, realistically speaking. Why would you do that?

The lords certainly weren’t stupid nor were the peasantry more intelligent than them, they had access to education far about what any peasants could dream of. Soldiers likely had far less information on the mongols and therefore less intelligence on how to defeat them. Lords, nobles, and knights back then were literally trained from birth in the ways of war, the peasantry could hope for nothing near that.They also ended up defeating the mongols.

Actually the Song dynasty of China did pretty well, they were one of the first factions who encounter the Mongols and the last to fall to them. Militarily the Song avoided open battle with the Mongols and use fortifications instead, as they lack cavalry due to losing northern China to the Jin century ago. However, corrupted governance and incapable rulers finally doomed the empire.

That's actually really good advises expecially coming from a priest That's pretty much how i got them in medieval total war them after loosing my french knights in conventionnal warfare When they first arrived i got many balistas on greats hills before their incoming army I was quite horrified when they outreached the balistas uphills with their composite bows When we tried to get in range they retreated and shot again and again at our army uphill There was no other choice than to charge downhill, the fearsome french knights heading first to cover the army of spearmen and squirmisher Needless to say it was a massacre The glorious charge of knights down the hill got mostly evaded by retreating cavalry archers and they were shot down by hails of arrows again and again, the infantry followed and got surrounded by mounted archers when the heavy knights were occupied trying to get the fleeing mongols But castles and cities resisted a great deal making them pay for every inch of rock At prague we finally stopped them but our armies were much diferent from the start Mostly heavy armored lancers with great shields and spears, arbalesters and other squirmishers tactically engaging mongols from safety And knights only used to make mongols fuck off from close range when needed Reconquering the lost lands was a slugfeast but easy from there, the frankish empire prevailed once again against the barbarians

Played as Turks when the mongols came, and I basically use their spell against them, sending small armies of horse archer (3-4 units each) to harss them, retreat whenever is possible and if they were destroyed then just build more horse archers, I also mysteriously found a hill which prevents mongols from shooting below and my saracen militia massacred an entire mongol army before another army arrived and force me into retreat, while cities were far more interesting, I have to deploy a lot of saracen milita in the streets rather than the gatehouse to absorb the cavalry momentum so the morale is lower due to them being separated, but my naffatun are exceptionally well against mongols. But by far the worst nightmare is the Tumurids, I turned off the time limit but they just stay out of the reach of my cannon towers, and if I sally out their elephant guns are going to massacre me, so at the end I just lost patience and quit, but since I have already destroyed most of their army I got the city back next turn.

Reminds me of Al-Tabari's documentation on warfare He mentioned that the true rivals that matched the Arabs of the 7th century at the time were neither the Romans or Persians. They were instead, the Caucasians and Scythians/Turks. The way to counter nomadic horsemen are armies which are just as mobile. The Arabs were very nomadic at the time as well, and they were adept with horses, which helped a lot in conquering Central Asia.

Hilariously enough, the way the Polish and Hungarians kinda defeated the mongols the second time around, was by staying put and fortifying the fuck out of thier castles. IIRC the Polish king noticed that during the first Mongol invasion, not a single stone castle fell, whilst every wooden one was burnt to the ground (as the mongsols were not interested in keeping the castle as a method of control). And so, he ordered the construction of a fuckton of stone castles, and the funding of many more knights. This way, the next time the Mongols arrived, they got bogged down with sieges, allowing the surrounding castles to harrass them with lightning raids by knights. And as the Mongols could not forage any more due to every one of their raiding and foraging parties being demolished or routed, they started to starve.

@Temujin1206
@Temujin1206 2 жыл бұрын
I mean yes but also no. The stone fortifications of Europe absolutely did stop the Mongol advance but there's no reason to think that it would have worked as a permanent solution. If there was one thing the Mongols excelled at it was adapting and learning to overcome new problems and given that they already had some thousands of European captives, had possibly already adopted gunpowder weaponry at that point and would continue to refine the technology (as well as adopting things like counterweight trebuchets shortly afterwards) it's highly likely that if the dynastic politics had played out differently and the Mongol empire had made concerted efforts towards further European conquest they'd probably have adopted European seige tactics and develop new techniques, learning how to take stone fortifications and carrying on into Europe. (Edit for grammar).
@TheTokkie

@@Temujin1206 IIRC The mongols had very much learnt how to use Gunpowder by the time they arrived in Europe, but they didn't bring any gunpowder weapons with them, as unlike China there were no centres to manufacture more gunpowder there, and as such, after the first few fights all those expensive gunpowder weapons would just be deadweight
@Temujin1206
@Temujin1206 2 жыл бұрын
@@dragon12234 The jury's still out on that one. For example many accounts mention the presence of noxious smoke and high pitched noises at the Battle of Legnicia, which some scholars suggest may have been gunpowder weapons, though others suggest it was just whistling arrows and smoke from fires. Certainly they wouldn't have had massive reserves of gunpowder or anything like cannons but they might possibly have had small quantities of powder and some handheld weapons like fire lances or rockets, the sources aren't entirely clear.

@@Temujin1206 Which means that the Mongols won’t be Mongols anymore. Just European armies against European armies. And then the problem arises that they would be familiar with the tactics and it wouldn’t be so much of a ball park for the Mongols. Hungarians were still having their nomadic style cavalry and so they were quite familiar with Mongol tactics. I mean, you cannot really adapt to an ambush or guerrilla warfare. It’s not really predictable. And this is where the problem arises on the internet. The Mongols would’ve still conquered Europe if they just continued on with it; they just had to copy and paste what the Europeans have. Well, the Indians and Mamelukes also copied and pasted what the Mongols had. Aforementioned Hungarians were Magyars before and still had their nomadic style of warfare around that period. If the Mongols “just did this,” it would be way too European for the Europeans to know. It’s not really how warfare would work. It’s not an easy solution. Every powerful armies always have their downfalls and the Mongols in Europe would most likely face that. There is no “one good army for all history.” If gunpowder was used a lot, away with cavalry because it’s not a good choice up against grape shot. Or a group of muskets. The Mongols wouldn’t be Mongols anymore in an era of pike and shot because their lustful cavalry would be too easy to destroy. Every powerful armies would have their downfalls. There’s this strange addiction that the internet has about how the Mongols are the only “Wunderwaffen” the universe has ever seen. It’s a weird relationship. I’m just pointing out that it is a little bit more complicated than just “If the Mongols just did this…”

Step 2: Do not pursue Mongol Step 3: Use projectile that can put through mongol armor, use good armor yourself with long melee weapons Last but not least, step 4: Pray to god and hope that the mongol don't come at you at full force. Let's see how our friend Song Empire is doing in south China They are having a well designed plan to defend in depth to help out each fortification in most efficient manner, nice! The Chinese are beating back their mongol in many defensive battles but never chase them, smart! They have explosive projectiles, firelances and heavy artilleries. They even kill a mongol khan with it. Wow, look at that armor, it''s heavy and sturdy, can they even walk in it? Let's fast forward in time and see how well they do! Oh God, how many years have it been? 30? 40 years? How many bodies have they thrown into south China? Why are the Song soldiers defecting to the mongol, isn't it aiding the mongol to mascaraing their brothers? Well, I guessed they aren't pious enough in their prayers.

How to defend against Mongols: 1. Put archers in a castle. 2. When Mongols storm the castle, place your archers in the gate. 3. Make them build a palisade. 4. Mongols storm through the gate and their cavalry dies to the palisade. 5. ???? 6. Profit.

North Vietnamese terrains are mostly mountains, hills and dense jungle so mongolian cavalry tactics are useless. Plus, the Vietnamese used scorched earth policy to starve the mongols and ambushed, sabotage their logistics. Then, the Vietnamese won several decisive battles. Yeah, they defeated the Mongols 3 times.

I wouldn't really rank Majapahit or The Mamluks with the same level of competence as Tran Hung Dao of Viet. Raden Wijaya was smart, but much like the invasions of Japan, and like Egypt, Majapahit had a lot of luck, and he was aided by his distance from the Mongol Empire. At Ain Jalut Qutuz and Baibars faced only a garrison force of 20,000 Mongols, not the Imperial Army leading the invasion, and they still almost lost.

@@TheSamuraijim87what do you mean garrison force and imperial army of mongol?? How do you differentiate between those 2???
@TheSamuraijim87
@TheSamuraijim87 4 ай бұрын
@@nak.lanang because the campaign of the battle of Ayn Jalut was undertaken against only two Tumens (20000 men) many of which were allied auxiliaries, and was won after the majority of the army had departed and a garrison force was left behind. Other campaigns, such as the siege of Baghdad, or the conquest of Song, were undertaken with immense armies, where men were drawn from across the empire.

In the battle of Legnica (today West Poland) the mongols lost so many men against a much smaller silisians army, which was just a small part of a bigger allied army against the mongols, that they had to stop their raid and went back south east, even when they won the battle. It was the first and the last time, that they tried to go west that far. From that day they focused more on balkans and arabs, which caused less casualties.

Traditional tactics of castle warfare worked fine in 2nd invasion of Hungary and 3rd invasion of Poland. 1. Move all food you can into castles and fortified cities. If Mongols want to pay the price in time and blood to take some, it's fine. If they want to ravage the countryside, they'll disperse, so... 2. Launch hit-and-run attacks from the fortifications. Knights have plenty of experience in this, are fighting on their home turf, and can usually retreat to safety when things go wrong. 3. After Mongols have been weakened enough by skirmishing and sieges, challenge them in the field.

The mongols main advantages were centralized command at all levels and discipline. In the west, every so-called army was a hodgepodge of lords cumpled up in one large group; often each lord would decide to break rank, or to do what _he_ wanted, or chase of looking for glory. In contrast, each mongol group had _one_ leader, who whom all subleaders would obey. Orders were followed, strategies were implemented.

The key is firepower and mobility. Slow moving Europeans forces alone would be ineffective without allied horse/archer support.

At the same time any cavalry would be useless against their archer cavalry. The only solution is surround or suprise.

If the terrain is not too open heavy cavalry can be strong see crusaders vs seljuks or austrians vs mongols. If terrain too open only crossbows that have more range and tower shields can beat them. But it al depends on terrain, training and of course the commander. An army of sheep with a lion commander is stronger than an army of lions with a sheep commander
