Hopefully I can pass on some experience / wisdom (I am 52!!) to newer entrants to cycling that have had little chance to ride mountain descents yet.

Great video thank you. I’m 6 months into cycling and descending terrifies me, I’d rather climb 20% inclines.

It's all practice, like anything. I think it's good to practice braking very hard from say 40kmh down to 10kmh, to realise just how much power and grip you have (in the dry). And the line through the bend is super important, a good line makes the bend easy.

I also learnt a lot of my descending skills from camps in Mallorca. Realised there was levels to the game, and it was actually an ex-MTB pro who I learnt the most from: he would often be able to show multiple line choices through a bend better than mine... he was also a big advocate on weight through the 'inside' hand as an area I was lacking. Can you cover something on left/right preference? I 've always found cornering to my left more challenging😂 Good series idea - cheers!

MTB-ers are often amongst the best descenders as it is a big part of the sport. Line is perhaps the biggest single factor in better cornering and it's a fine art to learn! And yes, inside weight is also a thing as is locking your outer leg. Hopefully, I'll get to cover all these points soon! I used to have a preference for left hand bends but lately it doesn't seem to matter so much....

I don't disagree with anything you said, but it's a bit odd that you choose this as the first topic. I have noticed that the biggest problem for most people on downhills is there cornering speed. You can maybe gain a second or two on entry by late braking, but if your mid corner speed is 10kph lower you will carry that deficit for the whole of the next straight which can add up quite a bit or you have to sprint out of every corner which just makes you tried in races. Personally I try to brake late, but with a good margin for error as the gain is relatively low and you increase the risk of something going wrong and take away most of your reaction time in case you misjudged the corner or there is suddenly some stones or gravel mid corner.

You're probably right that this video implies that the viewer already has a certain amount of experience to be able to at least corner confidently. You can build up your speed IN the corner over time as your confidence grows. Late braking is best practised on corners that you know, rather than new ones.

@@CyclespeedTours Yep, just putting it out there before someone thinks it's the first step of going downhill faster. You never know in this day and age😅

Whats your favourite descent in Mallorca and why?

Valldemossa because it's fast and smooth, but haven't quite got in the Top 10 yet though!

@@dkelly7159 oh wow, I hate PV!! Far too tight and slow, and if a car is coming up it can be pretty dangerous. Port de Canonges is similar but nicer. I quite like Galilea descending North, but South is too bumpy for my liking!

@@CyclespeedTours I like the bumps it reminds me or home in the Surrey hills😂 yeah I’ve done canonoges . Quite heavy on the wrists I found it with the steep hairpins like the Sobremunt.
