I agree about the coffee table. It is too far from the sofa as well. Ideal distance is 17 inches. I believe a larger, rectangular shaped one, would have been more appropriate.

You don’t need to reach the coffee table because you’ve got the shelf to put drinks etc on. The coffee table is just to fill the space and for decoration. The shelf is really practical.

@@NiffaK Yes, I’m aware of the shelf behind the sofa. I’m strictly speaking standard placement and juxtaposition of a coffee table in relationship to the seating arrangement, since the coffee table is considered the center of the living room. It’s location is such that all those in the conversation area can easily reach it. Elderly individuals are physically challenged, and to utilize a shelf behind the sofa, is impractical for them, thus the coffee table now becomes the reachable surface. In my design services, I place the coffee table approximately 14-18” from the sofa, enough space to navigate around those seated, and close enough to set drinks on.

That's called a console table😑 and that's not impractical, it's pretty useful especially when you have kids at home
