Creating rustic American Flags are a lot of fun. The designing of the stars is critical to making the flag look great. This video shows how to create the stars in the Vcarve Desktop software by Vectric. Create the necessary toolpaths and generate the gcode to carve.
The unions are for sale $30 each plus shipping. US only
The size of the union is 13x10.5 and will have the fifty stars or the Betsy Ross thirteen star.
If you want a logo in the field, this is priced on a per sign basis.

I can’t find the production that you posted about K40 lasers. However, I followed your recommendation and bought the Orion. Limited as expected but I can’t believe how precise the machine is. I love it. Thank you! BTW, if you ever decide to add a rotary attachment, please post your recommendation. Really enjoy your site.

Pawpaw i was thinking of just looking for an image of the stars grid online and then just trace bitmap and then bam ....resize...then done....assuming can get the size ratio good....but in theory it should work and is very simple...

Yes, I think you are right. I will try that with the 13 star colony flag

Great detail video. My one suggestion is look into a screen capture software like SOAPBOX, which is free on a basic level to have better control of your computer screen. Love the work and look forward to getting my own X carve some day.

I have tried several screen capture, but they have not been compatible with Imovies which is what I edit with using my Ipad. I film with the IPhone and edit on my IPad. The screen capture software on the laptop just has not worked. I agree that it would be much better. Will Soapbox work in this way?

i followed your instructions,( i'm pretty sure i did) but my stars wound up being rounded not pointy? Same bit, same settings. but my starts were different diameter than yours.

Next question is how did you set the z axis and is your table flat and square to the gantry?

@@PawPawsWorkShop i think the plunge depth was set too deep at 0.25" I think setting that to a shallower depth would get the points back on the stars. I can send the gcode or vcarve file to you if you want to see if i did something wrong that I am not seeing.

Hi. Thanks for the video and teaching. Quick question what are the proportions for flag to decide how big of star you want. Meaning how did you arrive at 0.375" radius star? Thanks

Thank you for your comments and subscribing to my channel. The flag that I made in the earlier video is 37 inches by 19.5 inches. The blue field is 12.75 by 10.5 inches. For that flag I designed stars that were one inch in diameter. This makes the radius to be .5 inches. It is important to understand that the stars are larger than what you would find in a normal flag. When designing a flag, you are looking for an overall pleasing appearance. In this video to show how to design the stars, I used a blue field that measured 8.5 by 7 inches. Thus, the stars needed to be smaller. I used .75 inches for the diameter. The software asks for the radius. Half of .75 is .375 inches. Hope this answers your question.

Paw Paw’s WorkShop I truly appreciate the details and it sure does help, because I was wondering if there were set proportions you HAVE to keep like you do in some company logos. Thanks

Yes, there are specific proportions in making flags. You can google and get all the measurements. Having said that, many people change the proportions slightly for their specific needs.

For the 37 inch flags how far apart are the guide lines?
@PawPawsWorkShop

The stars are 2' apart from. The border is 1 3/8". This is to the center of the star. Thanks for the question

I just received my X-Carve and I'm trying to learn the Easel software. Would you be willing to share or sell your program for cutting the stars

Keith Lake . The file was generated in V Carve Desktop and the gcode was then sent to Easel. In Easel there can be no adjustments. It is somewhat dangerous to run someone’s else’s gcode on another machine. I would be willing to help create the stars in Easel. But don’t forget learning is about doing. Have you started with Easel at all?
