Great episode! I recently had a friend tell me how he made up his 6’ leaders for redfish. I’m still a neophyte to fly fishing, so I didn’t press him on the short length. I was sidetracked by the kayak he was fishing out of. Redfish out of a kayak is what is known as a Cajun Sleigh-ride here in south Louisiana. Thanks for making it easy for me! Hey guys I really appreciate all the tips and advice you all give on KZfaq and at the shop phone/emails. I have a really quick and hopefully easy to answer question on leaders for bass fishing with my 5wt recon rod. I think you said the big nasty leaders was really good for turning over some of the bigger and more wind resistant flies (up to about a size 6ish). Thank you for all the pointers that you give.

This is some great info. I have had to learn this the hard way by getting tangling loops while trying to cast a big plug of twine on my practice rig. Shorter leader/tippet makes that air resistant "fly" stay in control a lot better. We are still waiting on that book.

I started fishing for real for the first time in my life last year, straight to a fly rod. I love all the info that's out there, but I quickly decided to get a quality spinning rod, to bypass all the technical noise while I took a few months to really learn my local waters first. After 9 months of practice, I got the fly rod back out this week. The basics I learned on my own through observing fish and trying different techniques absolutely helped build me up, to where I'm ready to devour all of the fly fishing content now. And most importantly, I see much more clearly now how down to earth and sensible your approach is. Used to romp around over in your neck of the woods when I went to Ohio State a long time ago. I like CO a lot better now though 😅

Brian what to say,awesome information & no holds bared call,have been fly fishing a long time (35 + years) & your information & knowledge still teaches this ol dog new tricks,I use mostly 7 1/2 ' leader with an extra 2' of tippet works for me,agree about leaders you can't fish a # 18 dry with the same tippet you'd throw a # 6 streamer,keep it up my friend,tight lines & bent rods

I’ve been a long time salmon fishermen that didn’t require this level of knowledge around leader. It was pretty straight forward stuff. But I’m going my first real trout fishing in Patagonia in a month and I’ve found these videos so helpful. Phenomenal video as always. I often wondered why the Bass leaders I buy are 9’ Long. They would never turn over a heavy Clouser Minnow or Wooly Bugger. Every cast the flys would collapse at about the last 3’ of the leader so I trimmed about 3’ off and it was a night and day difference! As always thank you for the knowledge!

Brian, I have to say... this is one of the best videos I've seen on leaders and the breakdown of their usage. I think you (sort of) know me; I typically only chase smallies, wipers and bluegill. But to expose me... because of the species I chase, and the size of flies I use (with the exception of bluegill), I learned through experience better than 50 years ago that a shorter leader was much easier to use through casting, again, depending on flies size, the desired presentation and a number of other considerations. One could find a happy medium with an in the middle outfit, but there is no one tippet, one leader, one fly line, one fly rod or one real that fits all. Thank you for confirming what I have thought for a very long time.

Lots of U.K. 🇬🇧 fly fishing channels are obsessed with 18-20 feet, non tapered leaders to fish 3-4 flies a cast. I find this a challenge, so really appreciate this particular video.

He’s serious about calling in questions. I called about airline carry-on rules for my 4-pc Orvis rods and they were absolutely wonderful. The airline website said no-go for carry-on, but MadRiver said all is well (for domestic flights). And so we flew with 3 fly rod tubes as part of our carry-on luggage with NO problems. The fly rod cases even generated a few good conversations with fellow travelers. So thank YOU MadRiver Outfitters - for always being awesome and making my son and me cast (and sail through the airports) like butter.🤓

Hands down best advice I've ever heard about leaders. When I learned to build my own leaders I started playing with different leader lengths and weights and right away I could notice better casting on my streamers when I went heavier and shorter. And dry flies cast a lot more nicely when you have a good long (but not too long) gradual taper down to the fly. I think tapered leaders a great for first timers, but you should learn to build leaders from the start. Building leaders is a lot easier than people might think. And that will teach you more about the physics behind all of this and how to properly cast than just mindlessly casting and spending your whole day undoing tangled tippets.

I would like to give you a thanks "Mad River Outfitters" im going to walmart today to get me a cortland 8ft 4 piece 5/6 fishing pole and i was about to get it but i herd of leaders so i came to you to learn about this thank you so much im 13 years old and i got bored using bait casters and spinning rods for fishing fixen to go up to smokey bear mountains and try it out im probaly gonna go to my pond with stocked bream and bass and test it out thank you so much for the tips i have been researching for over 3 days now.

100% correct. The most important piece of the entire setup. I would even emphasize that for spey casting (both SH or DH) the leader length and construction is critical.

Thank you, Brian, leaders and leader formulas are great but only if you know what you are casting. I had a guy that was fishing close to me a few years ago with an articulated musky fly that was about to through his gear in the water. The fly was a or similar to a quarter chicken dinner. the leader was a manufactured 9' tapered down to 5X or 4X. Saw the struggle and just by chance had a spare homemade fluro 80 lb. - 50 lb. 4 1/2 ' leader. The guy was so happy after the change he is now dedicated to musky on the fly and nothing else. Oh and the rod and gear was bought as a 9-10 wgt package from Sail or Cabelas, they did not even sell him a pike, musky, or predator leader.

Great information! Fly fishing can not be taken lightly. I am just getting into it. Tons of variables that needs to be considered. And generally speaking it is not a cheap sport to get into. I suggest to everyone, take your time and do your research. Then apply what you have learned.

@@Madriveroutfitters Thank you for your response. I understand that the euronymphing technique (sometimes also called Czech nymphing) is making inroads in the US too because it is highly effective. It's similar the the traditional "pêche au toc" in France, but with a flyrod. I'm sure you will come across it at some stage. I've picked up a couple of the thread furled leaders that Brian's holding up at 7:00 for my lighter weight rods and have been amazed at the difference from regular knotless leaders. Soak them in liquid floatant, add 12"-18" of tippet, and off you go. And here I was thinking I was getting better at casting. 😪

Excellent advice, I am just getting startednd have found that the heavy bass flies I am using are hard to handle with a rod length leader. I have been using 6 lb Mono to make my leaders and found a 6 foot leader I can handle with the big Craw flies.

Great video. You have such a talent for breaking things down to the fundamentals in clear way! As for industry emphases, look at the price scale: rod (hundreds of dollars) > reel (somewhat fewer hundreds of dollars) > line ($50-100) > leader ( $6-7) > fly ($1-2). I imagine that the decline in profit margin along this descending price progression is even steeper. Looks a lot like the scale of marketing expenditures from greatest to least! It's just business. I really appreciate how you are prioritizing the elements of fly fishing in terms of fishing effectiveness, rather than profitability. I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on furled leaders and how to fish them. Subscribed!!

So if I have a 10’ fly rod what is the difference if I use a 10’ tapered leader or a 7 1/2’ tapered leader with 2 1/2’ of tippet? Good video, lots of great information-thanks.

I just bought a 7.6ft rod and a reel from two different fishing shops. One of them told me to use the whole 9ft leader, but the second one told me that I could cut off 15 cm. from each end of the leader and then attach it to the fly line. For now I am using the whole 9ft leader.

Make you're own leader I highly recommend it way cheaper too and I use the slim beauty knot to connect all my sections keeps the leader nice and straight great for the trout I fish for here in Australia 👌

great video. I use 9 foot tapered leaders and cut about 15-20 inches off them and then tie on about twice that in tippet (I am casting dries for very spooky fish most of the time). Does not take too many fly changes before you have to tie in a new tippet so I get back into the butt section pretty quick (I also fish about 4 to 6 times a week). I'd like to know how far into the butt section you get before you swap that out with a new one, is there a general rule of thumb on that????

I just wing it usually aim for around rod length and it's never failed me. ...Of course I never catch fish, but the leaders look great in the air.

What's your thoughts on using a 5x 7.5 ft tapered leader then tying on a short 6x tippet. You would easily know when your tippet needs lengthening again. Thanks

Great video! Question on using two flies. If the recommended leader length is 9 feet and I want to keep 2 feet between both flies, would the flies be at 7 & 9 feet mark or 9 & 11 feet mark?
