In Japan, it’s a tradition to “detox” our room/house when the new year begins because we need to let go of, as well as clean, things from the past. Its not good to hold things from the past and in order to move forward in life it’s essential to sort out what’s really necessary. I actually enjoy sorting out my things and cleaning but I just never find the time and sometimes I don’t have the energy to do it haha

when doing your clothing ask yourself these questions: #1 does this fit me #2 would i still wear this #3 will this fit me next summer (you ask urself this if your in the winter or if its summer u ask if u will fit it next winter) #4 do i actually wear this or do i keep it because i feel pressured to keep it also when your doing clothing and u want ur closet to look nice then do these steps #1 put aesthetic (when i say aesthetic i mean pick your faveorite clothing that matches colors from the othwr stuff u choose) clothing u like hang it and put the rest in your shelves #2 keep your hangers matching! if non of them match just put them in color order but at target they cost $1 for i think 20 hangers #3 put your clothing hamper in the back -unlessitsemptey- #4 if u dont like people seeing your closet try to get into the habbet of closing it everytime u leave it if u have a hard time getting rid of decor ask these questions: #1 does this match my aesthetic? #2 does this match my room theme #3 do i usually hide it away or not? #4 would i actualy put this somewhere {\_/} ( •-• ) / > > bunbun hopes this helped! like if it did :D also thanks for reading this far if u did :)

As someone who just went through a house fire, your sentimental items would definitely be an afterthought. While in a burning building, the only thing you’ll probably think of are your survival and getting any family members (including pets) out safely. Seriously. I was on the phone with a dispatcher, attempting to get my cat out from under a bed. Eventually, I had to close the bedroom door and leave my cat to get my teenage sister out of the house (even though I kept yelling for her to go outside). I had nothing but my phone. We didn’t even grab any shoes to wear. Luckily, everyone is alright, including my cat.

Kaylee Smith On May 10th, it’ll be exactly 1 year since the house fire. Leaving my cat inside was the worst feeling ever. He’s my entire world and I’m glad he’s fine. My sister sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns while I was trying to get my cat. She actually stopped the fire from spreading. Thanks for the concern over my baby!

Experienced house fire too and had a home filled with family heirlooms and could have cared less … and I’m really sentimental and love family treasures. My kids, cat, hubby and myself all safe and healthy. Didn’t loose the treasures but ended up decluttering over 70% of them after the fire because I realized they aren’t my treasures. My family is my treasure!

My older brother was in a house fire, too. He wasn't home, but his roommate was. The entire building saved everyone except 1 cat, which belonged to his roommate. He lost everything in the fire. I keep that in mind when I buy things. "Am I okay losing this in a fire? Will I grab this in a fire? Does this make me happy?"

hey krist, just wanted to say, don't throw away or the childhood sentimentals. i think its so great you kept so much from your childhood - i couldn't because i moved around a lot as a child and i threw away most of my childhood. i don't think i own anything over four years old. and i already regret it! because i know when im old, i won't be able to remember much of my younger years and won't have anything from those years. my advice is to keep your childhood things that mean something to you, keep it in boxes and store it for when you're old ;)

I believe that taking everything out of your closet at once can be quite overwhelming for some people. Rather than doing that I would recommend taking out one category at a time (for example all dresses), sort through that and put it aside. Then move on to another category. After everything will be sorted out you can put back the items that you chose to keep.

My ideea for how to keep all those wrappers, photos and other memories: glue them in a journal. That way you would have all of them in one place and it would not take much space. You could even write down the year every one of them is from. I noticed my problem of having too much stuff when I had to move for uni in a new city. I took everything I needed with me but I still had a lot of stuff at home so I got rid of most it. Lots of love from Romania xo

To be fair I still kept a lot of sentimental items and I wrote about the ones I threw away. I moved old school notes to my office space and designated them as references materials. I kept the old books I read as a child and for some reason couldn’t let go but decided to store them in a shelf that I could open later (when I might have kids or the future entertainment center I’d make). These items had a plan and would not be forgotten. Also I love the box at the end. What a great way to repurpose items!

I did/still do some of that, with the nostalgic stuff. But at some point it got overwhelming. I bought a Hobonichi and any wrappers or stickers I want to keep I paste in there and write a bit about it. As for the childhood stuff, maybe try what I did. Take it out, sift through it, enjoy the memories, and toss some. I swear, each time you go through the "stuff" means less and less. You find yourself wanting the space to help you live the life you have now!

The hands down easiest one is sentimental items for me bcs i love change and leaving the old behind I value more who I am today and who I wanna become tommorrow. I also had a very rough childhood and teenage years so I wrote texts and songs and had a lot of stuff that showed me how miserable I felt during those times and one day I threw them out and felt the instant relief. Out of sight out of mind rly. I have a very tiny amount that 100% sparks joy and that's all I need. One thing I love tho are photos and i think you could take fotos of those nostalgic items you used to love and so 20-30 years later you can open them and look at them and remember wich is what the item actually does. It makes you remember the past, the joyfull moments in life.

You look so much more older and wiser than in the room decor video I watched yesterday... You knida remind me of lavendaire, but without purple hair.

For sentimental items I recommend scanning them (if possible)! That way it doesn’t occupy space, but you still have access to them

For sentimental items: You can also take photos of everything and write about what memories each item brought you so you have less times taking up space, but you still have them and their memories recorded.
