This video shows how to do an electrical trouble shoot test on a power tool. With a simple multimeter you can perform continuity tests to make sure you have current flowing through the motor, brushes, switch and power cord.

Have a wagner paint gun that started tripping my GFCI outlet. Bought a newer model and it works fine. I checked the older gun with my multimeter to connect only to the plug as you're showing and it checked out fine, so its obviously something further up in the tool. Pulled the cover off then tested the switch - it was fine. So pretty sure it was the motor. Scavanged the switch and cord, the rest went into the trash.

What does it mean when the numbers jump all over the place and then back to 1 or 2? Thank you!

I have a Bauer 6 in polisher I've got continuity at the power switch from one side to the other with the switch on ....switch off there's continuity between the 4 contacts on the back side but only throughout from one side to the other with switch on as it should be it's got like a little contactor type switch but then there's a variable speed switch and I can not get a beep out of it no matter how I poke and prod it I'm sure it's just user error so any advice oh I removed the variable speed switch from the machine and still nothing I'm sure that it's bad but can not say for sure at this point. Because I don't know what tgehellim doing lol

Can you please recommend an affordable and accurate multimeter? I have seen them from 30=200. It would be my first multimeter. I fix mainly vintage power tools and definitely need one of these. Thanks. the video was very informative.

Do they make a non contact rpm tester for electric tools to test the rpms? My 12 in inch mitre saw seems to be turning slower than usual. I'm wondering if one of the brushes is not working correctly.
@MasterToolRepair3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, Peter. Sure, any of the digital tools will work. You simply place a white mark on the rotating part, then shine the digital tach at the rotating part and it will show you the RPMs. Here is one on Amazon: www.amazon.com/AGPtek%C2%AE-Professional-Digital-Tachometer-Contact/dp/B004Q8L894/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=AGPtek%C2%AE+Professional+Digital+Laser+Photo+Tachometer+Non+Contact+RPM+Tach&qid=1627394126&s=automotive&sr=1-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExNkZYRFhNTzlWQzNMJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDkxNDE1M0FFNTVLNVg2RjNPWCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDMwMTg5MURGVEkwRlNEWUNIVCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

@@MasterToolRepair Thanks, I did see that done but thought maybe they made one like what they use on mowers, chain saws, etc. PS, what's the best marking media to use, tape, paint? Thanks again.

@@peterford9369 Either will work, honestly. The kit shown comes with reflective tape.

That does not mean the cord has a short. It could just meat it is open. If the cord has a break, it could be considered open circuit. You are shorting the cord when you test across the two leads.
@MasterToolRepair7 жыл бұрын
Good catch. What I SHOULD have said is, "this is intermittent showing that the circuit is opened when you wiggle the cord, thus not supplying power to the saw."
@anthonygostling6 жыл бұрын
Its not a short, its a break in the cable, ie open.

Hello my name is Ricardo am Brazilian and repairing mechanical electrical tools dewalt bosch makita.tem work in the US ??? How much does a repair mechanic ???
@MasterToolRepair7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ricardo. Are you looking to have these tool repaired? It certainly depends what the problem is and how serious it is. I always recommend calling the manufacturers directly and speaking with a local service center (if there is one in your area) or asking for a technician who can assist you with this information. If you click on the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page on these manufacturer's websites you will get a phone# or an email form you can fill out. It honestly just depends on the tool, the age of the tool and what the problem is exactly. Most repair shops charge by the hour or by the type of tool. E.g. electric power tools have a minimum of $25 labor up to $60 (plus parts), depending on what the problem is.

I am sorry Ricardo, we do not. We are a web business and only ship parts out, we do not have a service center or repair shop. We do these videos to help people diagnose and repair equipment but do not operate a repair business.

@@MasterToolRepair I might be mistaken but I feel he is (was, 4 ears ago) looking for an open position in the US as a service technician :) I think he meant "How much does a repair mechanic [make in the US]?" Ricardo, have you managed to get a foothold there? Are you a rich man by now? ;) By the way, this video I just watched was awesome! I'm nust getting into repairing my old tools around the house, and this instruction is a life-saver (in terms of what to look for)!

Did you really need to test the cord? It has visibility broken wires near where it enters the tool.seems like a Captain obvious moment!

We tested continuity in the power cord for instructional purposes, obviously this particular cord is shot :-)
