Hi Gary, I liked learning about the trellising method you are using for the tomatoes in that one bed. QUESTION: were the tomatoes all indeterminate or determinant? The reason I ask is because in my short 2 years of experience any cherry, pear or grape tomatoes were all indeterminate so I will be watching how you grow these tomatoes on so short of a trellis.

Thank you Gary, great videos, a useful help to people like me starting out...although...I do think gardeners should be considering alternatives to PEAT based composts now, it would be good to know what you would recommend for more sustainable alternatives? The huge amonut of peat use in the gardening industry is jaw dropping and has terribly damaging effects on the climate and valuable ecosystems, which any gardener who loves the earth will know about, most composts come with some form of 'footprint' but peat is possibly the worst. I've been using spent mushroom straw based compost from a local farm which has worked well. Thanks again, if you've not already done a video on peat alternatives, that would be welcomed :)
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 жыл бұрын
Peoples budget and access vary greatly. Tons of home made compost is best but not always practical. There is coco coir, but that concerns people for the carbon transportation costs. There are wood based products but they need to be well composted before you use them or give them a good bit of nitrogen. Aside from making a ton of compost, each alternative often has a cost to the environment or costs more budget wise. I presented a product called Beyond Peat last year. That could work. @The Rusted Garden - would you try coconut coir? Peat moss is easy but we need our peat bogs desperately and I like scotch so.... :D I've found that one large brick (like kempf coir) makes about as much as one of those peat moss bales for $10-$12 dollars per brick. Sustainable is attainable!!! Thank you so much for your channel and for the awesome seeds!!!!

I'm wondering a couple of things here (perhaps, since it's what I might try it--had I any lawn./ garden space upon which to make itself "a go", really). Number one: might one get away with laying down some layers of...cardboard/newsprint as a lawn "kill zone"--and, THEN, make the piles over...itself? Obviously, letting the grass die off underneath? (Could, thusly-down, till it...UP the next year--after the grass had died away, already?) Secondly, and, IF one were doing this for later in the...year--their NOT planing it the first season (maybe, an autumn project more) would planting a cover crop (nitrogen fixing) would well, too? (Not certain about their root depths: BUT, might...also work into idea #1 to help break up the soil beneath the cardboard layer?) Ideas...anyhow? God bless! P.S. You're THE "instructive" site presently about which I'm aware. Thanks...really?

Love the details, however how do you control the ground gophers from chewing up your planters and killing your plants, I live out in Riverside CA, and we have some agressive gophers that love to eat up all your hard work. Just wondering what kind of advice I could get from you Sir. I have tried some gopher products, but no luck. Thanks again for all your detailed videos, your channel was the inspiration that made me and my 4 young sons want to go out and start a garden in our back yard. We sit around watching your videos and decide what we want to grow, So far we have a few pepper plants , tomato, cilantro, zuchinni, and cucumbers going. Thanks again, and any help with my gophers would be very helpfull.

Question If I'm in a northern USA climate will the day Sun versus night Sun be different as far as intensity. I've been told you want to have day sun preferably to night. I have never experienced sunburn on my plants. Unless it's a seed started from inside.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
When the sun is highest in the sky it will be strongest. Plants started indoors have no protection against the suns UV rays. You have to slowly over a week move then in and out to get used to the sun. Morning sun or late afternoon sun is better for them. I live in UK zone 8.. Always had problem accessing watering as we are mild and wet most times.. So plan to put plants down in soil I have amended my soil bed ( which seems to be a little clayish in some spots on the top but beneath looks alright..) with multipurpose compost bags from store which has 50% peat moss. I have mixed this with fish, blood and bone and chemical granular fertiliser. Plan to put this compost now as a layer 2-3inch layer.. Will that be good enough for growing Dhalias, aubergines, chillies and peppers?

Not the best way possible. I wonder if the original commenter even listened to a thing he said.Starting your comment saying "completely wrong" is insulting and inaccurate in my honest opinion.
