A dilution ratio is the ratio of solute to solvent. You are combining a solute (concentrated product) to solvent (water) to achieve the desired concentration.
In a dilution ratio (for example, 1:3 or 1:7), the smallest number is always your concentrate (product) and the bigger number is water. So in a case of a 1:3 dilution ratio, that would mean 1 part of product and 3 equal parts of water.
Add your water in the spray bottle first, then add the concentrate. Try to use DISTILLED WATER when possible, for optimal product performance and shelf life.

Although I'm familiar with ratios and how to mix products, you said something in the video that I never thought about--putting the water in the bottle first and then adding the product at the end so as not to make any suds. I've always placed the product in the bottle first and then added the water, always causing a lot of suds which flow out of the bottle. Excellent tip Pan!

Thank you Pan, this is such an important video! The way you explained everything was super simple and I even learned a few calculating tricks. I highly recommend those who want to go one step further and pick up some gallon jugs for those who are doing higher volume. That is precisely what I did to simplify my ONR and APC dilution when using pump sprayers.

Thanks for this video Pan. I had always wondered when I saw a dilution ratio, which number was the product and which was water. I asked Meguiars regarding the Tire and wheel cleaner because the instruction said to dilute 2:1. I did not know if that meant 2 parts product, one part water or the other way around. They never responded so I have diluted 1:1 instead. Now I can dilute the product properly in the future.

Hi Pan. Very helpful vid. Thanks! Just wanted to share my experience with Carpro spray bottles. For some reason the heads quite rapidly fail and unable to pump out product. The nozzles do not appear to be the problem because I have confirmed they are not clogged. It seems the pump assembly is the culprit. This is surprising given the quality of Carpro products themselves. I have had this occur with both bottles pre-filled with product as well as with replacement spray heads. Just a heads-up to Carpro.

@@PanTheOrganizer I have to make epoxy adhesive putty using West System Epoxy Resin and Hardener and I needed to figure out how to make a 5:1 ratio for the resin-to-hardener mix. I'll probably have to use 2 cups (16 oz) total volume. So with a 5:1 ratio, 5+1=6, so I should be using 13.3oz resin and 2.67oz hardener. But I'll have to add Cab O Sil a little bit at a time until I get the right thickness that I need. I'm making an induction heater for my Dynavap M vaporizer using a 16 oz Starbucks tumbler and I drilled some holes. I have one hole for a mini DC voltmeter that's on the side of the cap, and I need something to secure the voltmeter into place permanently, protect it, and make it look more professional. And that's why I need the epoxy adhesive putty.

Pouring water does help prevent overflow due to foaming of a product. I learned this as a new bar tender at college. I was asked for a Guinness Shandy. It was done as a hazing, no one wants a Guinness shandy, but watching a new barman struggle to pour the drink is worth ten times what it costs to buy. Knowing that I was facing a tough challenge I guessed that pouring the fizzy lemonade first would minimize the vesuvius effect. So I did that and then very very carefully poured the guinness from a bottle into the glass held at 45 degrees making sure the Guinness flowed onto the glass and not directly into the lemonade. It went flawlessly. Had I put the guinness in first it would have flowed over multiple times like a failed chemistry experiment. I handed the disappointed customer his Guinness shandy and felt very smug with myself having escaped the hazing experience. It was a lucky guess on my part. So yes Pan, adding water first minimizes foaming of the product.

Hi Pan, I just watched (and enjoyed) your dilution ratio video and was wondering if the same method applies to a pump sprayer. For instance, I have just purchased a 3L Marolex pump foam sprayer (as recommended by you) and wish to add P&S Brake Buster at a 1:3 dilution ratio. How do I do this and still allow space for the air pressure? Cheers John

One tip I use because I do not have the screw on funnel shown in this video, is to put a 10" /11" clear tube (from any hardware) onto to the funnel so the product being diluted does not "suds" up. The bottle actually fills from the bottom. Works great.

thank you Pan. interesting tutorial. I love that you are so helpful to explain anything. I think most of us feel the math part (20:1 means one part to 20 parts) is the easy part of dilution. however, would you explain how different solvents are used with solutes (e.g., petrolium-based solutes like tar removers, alcohol-based solutes diluted with alcohol solvents, and of course the process of silicon-based solutes). You explained why pros would dilute to save money, however, some solvents are used to control dwell time, reactants, and of course level of astringence. would you explain that, please? also, can you review how solvents affect pH levels, and how to manipulate those levels to limit corrosion, and to change the impact of solutes to alter their purpose (e.g., altering soap pH to remove lipid residues, or wax). also, please explain how to track pH when you have already diluted a solute (i.e., a pH that you have in volume diluted by half, and then show the calculation to ascertain the new pH level), like how 8oz of pH 12 + 8oz water = 16oz at what pH? this is particularly helpful when working with multipurpose products, or APCs. with multiple agents in a product, and by monitoring its dilution level, and solvent type, you can emphasize use on one surface and minimize its affects on others. this is particularly helpful with carpet and fabric materials, and protein vs. tannin stains, while not affecting dye color. these are the things most home enthusiasts, and some pros, struggle with or just get wrong. also, can you review how the foam gun changes dilution ratios, from lock to lock and depending on aperature (I don't think most of us know those numbers). we could really use a helpful tutorial like that, and please assume we can already do the basic math. thank you Pan, you are so awesome. love your videos.

Unfortunately, it would be a boring topic for most of my viewers, and a bit too much on the chemistry side. I will stick to car detailing as much as possible here. Unless I get many requests like this one for that specific topic. To make it simple, pressure washers all have different pressure ratings and water flow rates, and this has an effect on the amount of foam produced. PIR allows the correct amount of product to be used for your specific setup. Companies like Bilt Hamber, explain the PIR calculations on the label of their snow foams like Touch-Less and Auto-Foam.

One thing that confuses me is when some companies offer multiple possible dilution ratios, and I'm not sure what specific advantage I'd get choosing one over the other in different situations. For instance, The Last Coat makes an interior cleaner that you can dilute down to 15:1. They say you can vary the dilution to vary the strength for different applications, but how can I make an intelligent decision? I can only think to use it either at full strength or 15:1. (I think you've talked about some degreasers that offer multiple possible dilution ratios.)
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
When a company offers multiple dilution ratios, it's because you can do testing to see which dilution works best for you. Say for example you get an APC. If it can be diluted 5:1 all the way to 20:1, it's because there are different use case scenarios. You would probably use the 5:1 dilution to clean engine bays or tires, and then 15:1 on interior plastics, and perhaps 20:1 for carpets and upholstery. You have to try different dilutions on surfaces and see which ones work best.

Thank you for the very informative video. I was also thinking when you are talking about a 3 to 1 dilution ratio, why not just say a 25 percent dilution. I guess that is another way of looking at a dilution ratio. I would love to see a video on dilute chemical for foam sprayers, whether it be a hand pump(ik foamer) or one that attaches to your pressure washer. The ratios seem like they change so much depending on what products you use. It changes depends on how thick or thin the car shampoo is or whatever the product is. I never seem to get a perfect spray pattern, it's either real runny, not a lot of foam or just a straight line pattern. It's never right. Is there any car shampoo that really work good in a pump sprayer, specifically one meant for ceramic coatings? Do you know of any good videos out there or do you have one. Thanks for all your help and keep up the good work.
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
There are many factors that influence the quantity of foam you get from a pump sprayer. 1) Make sure you have a FOAMING pump sprayer. Like IK Foam Pro 2, or Marolex Axel series. Each company has regular sprayers, and foaming sprayers. 2) Make sure you use a product that is meant to foam. 3) Find the appropriate dilution ratio for your setup. First start by following dilution recommendations on the label, and then adjust according to your desired level of foam. Not all products foam the same. 4) The water quality has a huge impact on thickness/richness of foam. I have a water deionizer system in my garage, for the best water with zero minerals. That means I get more foam, more suds. 5) Make sure the pump sprayer you have is good quality. IK and Marolex sprayers are excellent.

Just round off the numbers. It doesn’t have to ve 100% precise for detailing chemicals dilutions. If you’re in the ballpark it’s totally fine. For example, if you meed 4.8 oz of product, just use 5 oz.

Hi Hari! Welcome to my channel. You discovered one of the biggest car detailing channels on KZfaq as we surpassed 770,000 subscribers and are getting close to 100 million views! I have been detailing for 25 years and I love to share my knowledge and passion with my viewers. You found the right channel to help you learn everything about detailing. Thanks for the kind words about my videos. Paint protection film (PPF) is very different from a ceramic coating. PPF is made to protect the paint from scratches and stone chips. A ceramic coating doesn't protect from scratches and stone chips. What it does is boost gloss, add slickness, add hydrophobic properties (water beading and sheeting), UV protection and self-cleaning properties, meaning that the vehicle is much easier to wash during maintenance washes. So for the best of both worlds, you would have a PPF applied first, and then a ceramic coating on top. I made a video showing this process here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbhzmtSVrNjaonU.html I hope this helps!

Excellent Pan. Im a mechanical enginer PhD from Colombia in south america. When do you talk on PIR dilution? Thank very much.
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
Panel impact ratio (PIR) is a completely different topic. It is dependent on your pressure washer and foam cannon setup's ability to discharge a certain volume of water in order to calculate how much snow foam actually makes it to the surface of the vehicle (concentration). I haven't made a video on that topic yet.
@donaldpritchett4055
@donaldpritchett4055 Жыл бұрын
@@PanTheOrganizer Here's my vote for a video on PIR. This was going to be my question as well. I realize that if I mix say 50ml of foam in 1l of water per instructions, but then use a 1.2gpm pressure washer my ratio of foam to water is way off.
