Today, we'll take a look inside a simple and well done double action OTF from HK and Hogue, and take the opportunity to see just how a double-action Out-the-Front Automatic knife works.

So here I am 2 years later, using this as a reference video. I followed your example and am very pleased with the improvement in the action of a very new Micro Incursion. It slides much better now after disassembling and cleaning/oiling. Thanks very much !

That is really nice little otf. The simplicity of a double action otf like this beautiful

Appreciate the tutorial! There is/was a certain amount of mystery to me about the innerds of an OTF, and this helped clear that up. Not saying that I think I think I NEED an OTF....but that's a different issue. ;)

Been scared to disassemble my Combat Troodon. Gonna buy that damned proprietary tool and then do so now Nick. Thank You. Love your work!

Wow, dual springs and shrink wrap. The shrink wrap prevents the ringing some OTFs have. I need to crack open my UTX-70 CA and remedy the spring sing on it. All my Microtechs and it's the only one that does it.

hogue did a wonderful job on their otfs! I use my Hadron a bit and find a light touch of slide grease where the blade rides the "rails" to really keep the action working well. light oil on the springs and plate to keep the corrosion away, and a tad bit of slide grease on any rubbing wear points. I use Brian Eno's light or regular slide grease and have found Super Lube grease to be ok. Using straight oil, light or heavy, I have found it to need reapplication sooner. But it still works. thanks for the vid Nick! your content is always wonderful!

Beautyfully made, the ones they sold here in Holland when they were legal had loads of plastic parts,( wich broke)

This thing has many fewer internal parts than I would have guessed. Which is good.

I am pretty sure that the knife isn't under spring tension when opened or closed. When the actuator switch is pushed in the open direction it builds tension on the spring until it over comes the detent/lockbar at the rear of the handle then it launches the blade forward similarly to a rock out of a slingshot. Once open the blade isn't under tension until you create the tension by retracting the actuator switch and it over comes the detent/lockbar at the front of the handle and slingshots the black back inside the handle.

Heck yeah

I have a hogue otf and it will not retract. It is not just needing the blade to be reset, I have to disengage the blade lock to be able to slip the blade back in at all. Do you have any videos where you discuss the possible malfunctions? Not the simple just pull on the blade to have it lock into the track again, that is not the issue I have. Thanks!

Nick.......it would be good idea to mark your work pad corners to the range of the camera. Then you would be able to see if what you are doing is captured on camera

This looks better designed on the inside than a UTX-70.

I really wanted Nick to put the blade in upside down.

You can "on" rail the blade reversed. Pull the switch back and flick your down and let the gravity help out. Not many seems not to know this. Try it and see if it works on other similar knifes. Useful? Not really. Fun? o Yes!

There are plenty of options for size but with you holding this in your hands can you find this to be a reliable self defense tool?

My OTF manual said to use lighter fluid to clean and lube the knife after every 300ish deployments. And I see people claiming it isn't a lube and it will do nothing but ruin the knife. IF the knife is made with plastic parts, sure, but an all metal knife?? Does the manual for that have an opinion on if you can or just shouldn't use it?
@jayr5262 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with your friends. I would never use lighter fluid or similar product to lube a knife. And if the OTF deployed so fast as to create sparks, well............... If Nick tells you otherwise, take his advice.

Only a very light oily film is left. It is more for cleaning lint, you just use a few drops and wipe the excess off the blade and it dries quick, save that residue. Seeing how easy it, potentially, could be to maintain, I think I'm going to just open it up and see if I gunked up the works.
@ting2802 жыл бұрын
I used to use lighter fluid just for the blade, it eats through everything so it's amazing to clean with but I can't see using it as a lubricant. That just doesn't make sense.
@rabbitslayer422 жыл бұрын
I was likely wrong about it lubricating.. but I opened it up a week or so ago and it was so clean I see no reason stopping now.

Hi Nick. Hey do you know what the raised threaded screw holes on the interior bottom portion of this knife are called. Or like how the circumference edges of the screw holes are raised up. I'm trying to learn the correct terminology for this kind of screw hole. See, I have a 2002 Ultratech that doesn't have raised holes like this which seems to cause the body screws to be too short to catch the threaded holes on the inside of the knife. It's weird I know, but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Good demonstration!

its sad otfs are all a little more expensive. im aware that this is how it works, but still.
